  • It is illogical to criticize the bible for not being what was never intended to be, it would be like getting mad at a dog for not being a cat! This is why I don't take seriously those who criticize the bible for not being "scientifically accurate". Check this out!

CHAS. H. Spurgeon once stated the idea that Bible needs defending is akin to me standing in front of the great cat intent on protecting him from an adversary instead of stepping aside and allowing him to take care of his own business… The central question, for me, is why do I believe what it says to the point of living my life aligned to its precepts?

In Luke 21 it says "All men will hate you because of me. But not a hair of your head will be *perish.*"
This is relevant to this discussion.
"Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds."
Seeds arent technically alive like hair isnt considered alive either.
Neither of these can perish or die because they arent alive to begin with. From a scientific POV, its like saying you killed a rock.
So these examples are like calling Jonahs whale a fish and can be some trouble. Whales are mammals, not fish by scientific definition. But in Hebrew, "fish" is just a catch all word for all the animals who swim in the oceans if I recall correctly.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say the world os a flat disc.
Flerfs just try to claim it does by taking clearly figurative language to imply it is flat.

Now IF you want to say, well God just meant a 3D version of a circle, then why didn't He say it? I mean if we HAVE to take everything literally, then God SHOULD have said, Disk or Cone, for your model or Sphere for the actual model.
But, for the sake of argument, let's give God a pass for not knowing that a circle is a 2D object, but He obviously MEANT a 3D version of a circle. Well guess what? THAT'S a SPHERE. Look up the definition of a sphere and a circle, the only difference is the circle specifies all dots equidistant from a point IN A PLANE. The plane is what makes it 2D instead of 3D, as a plane has ZERO thickness. A Sphere is an object with all points equidistant from a center point WITHOUT the restriction of the plane which is what makes it a sphere, a 3D version of a circle.
Now if He meant a disk or a cone, which is the typical model you Flerfs like to use, why didn't He say that?
You literally have ZERO argument or ground to stand on. What's worse is you are blaspheming God's name, to make Him look like an idiot and all His followers. That we are no different than a cult that forces its believers to deny basic reality, that ANYONE can observe with their own eyes. You aren't defending the Bible or God's word, you are mocking it.
Note you didn't even touch on the NUMEROUS verses that talk about the 4 CORNERS of the earth, which would make it a SQUARE. So quit being so intentionally ignorant.
We were made in God's image and likeness, so we have similar characteristics and traits like Him. This means we are CREATIVE, we don't talk in JUST literal terms like a robot or an autistic child, we use figurative speech, and so does He! But God is not the direct, proximate author of scripture. The authors of scripture were the authors of scripture. God inspired them, sure, but "In the beginning, God created..." is not God's direct speech, but a human author talking *about* God. If we allow the human authors to be what they were - human authors, however inspired we might affirm they were - it spares us from having to attribute "6-year-old child" mental characteristics to God that rightfully belong more to us as finite humans with limited knowledge.

It is a doctrine of accommodations which means YHVH allowed these flaws based on mans understanding at the time. This too makes him a liar by allowing error in his word which he states is without truthful error. If his word is true about the facts, not mistranslation or scribe commentary, then the earth is flat. @@polktechnologysolutions5874 your point #1 is just the fallacy of composition.
Concerning #2 - I understand where you're coming from and why you'd expect that kind of unilateral consistency, but I don't think that does justice to what is actually presented in scripture. There are simply too many instances in the bible where things happen or are said that only make sense in light of the culture of the time. Heiser himself pointed to some really compelling work that was done, for example, on how Greco-Roman understanding of human anatomy and hair affected the head covering instructions in 1 Cor. 11. The "science" of the time doesn't measure up to what we know today, but that doesn't take away from the ethical point Paul is making in that passage.
I dunno. Suit yourself of course, but to me the expectation that the whole Bible be 100% scientifically accurate on every front actually strikes me as more of a capitulation to secular humanism/empiricism/logical positivism than an actual rebuttal to them.

@@MaxwellKozen I enjoy the civil discord. Just can't wrap my head around saying the Bible has factual errors in it. That's completely different then not understanding context due to cultural differences. In fact, the two aren't even related. If any claim in scripture, of any magnitude, is provably false, then all scripture must necessarily be thrown out because one couldn't know if any other claim is indeed true... (how could you trust a liar?)
I would like to ask, besides biblical cosmology, can you name any other claim presented in the Bible that is provably false? Not cultural misunderstandings or other non-specfic points such as debated doctrinal points, rather claims that are (by the writers) thought to be true but are in fact not true? If there is one, I can't think of it. If there isn't, maybe flat earth is also actually true and people just need to deal with that reality.

@@ElizabethV01NOR I don’t think you read or understood my comment. Literally every scripture you mentioned uses observational language. Some of these expressions are even used until this day.
The Bible wasn’t written to the 21st century audience. So it makes sense that God inspired these scriptures in a language that was understandable for the initial audience. And even today I know what is meant with „the sun rises“ or these other examples (and if you’re honest you must admit that you understand them as well). It’s not that hard to understand.
What’s amazing is that these texts could be understood by its audience several thousand years ago. And they can still be understood today. That’s the reason these verses were written in observational language. And not just that, there’s another dimension to this. Even a child can understand what is meant with „the sun is setting“ or „the heaven is spread out like a tent“. So adults and children during the Iron Age, classical antiquity or even the 21st century can understand these verses. Because the Bible was written to be the universal word of God for all people (even though us today are not the initial audience).

We can't investigate much of our realm because the people who are responsible for the lie also rule the world and don't allow us to go anywhere near the firmament. If a pilot or a boat captain ever gets out of their pre-approved lane they will very quickly lose thier license and get arrested. Not only are we legally prevented from going to the middle of the plane but we also can't go to the exterior of it either. Ask yourself how an airplane that travels 500 miles an hour can fly from Los Angeles to New York at all if the earth is also turning at roughly a thousand miles an hour in the same direction. It would never be possible to catch up. As well, if you are going in the other direction, against the spin, from New York to LA, you should be able to go from the east coast to the west waaay faster. However, in reality it's the opposite of that. West to East is 5 hours and 20 minutes but East to West is 6 hours and 20 minutes. Truthfully if the earth is actually spinning counter clockwise at a thousand miles an hour it would be faster to go from the west coast to the east coast by flying west around the entire ball because the plane could never catch up if the earth is spinning twice as fast at the plane flys.
Also, imagine a plane landing on a north/south runway, perpendicular to the spin that is moving faster than the speed of sound. The second the rubber ties hit the tarmack, the plane instantly flip over sideways, killing everyone aboard. The airlines would be sued out of business instantly and it would be a terrible business model. Back to that helicopter. If the earth is spinning counter clockwise at a thousand miles an hour you would be able to lift a helicopter off the ground on the east coast, hover for two and a half hours and land on the west coast two and a half hours later. It'd be the same with a hot air balloon.
