    UPDATE!!! ***************************
    Thanks to the comments section below, I'm learning that I've been pronouncing GORE wrong all this time! I'm self taught and I screw up the technical/proper stuff all the time but I appreciate the education I receive from so many of you. So thank you.
    Apparently they are called GORE, or GORES for plural or a GORED Skirt for the completed piece!. Some are saying Godets but most are saying Gore. I dunno haha... either way they're an awesome way to add volume to a simple piece!
    Today, on the DIY, we're upcycling a men's button-down shirt into a feminine & flowy frock dress! I'll be walking you through my take on the iconic Rhode Rainbow Dress (that I've had my eyes on forever). While this dress may look a little intimidating to create, I've got all the tips, tricks, & hacks to make this upcycling tutorial as beginner-friendly as possible! All you need is a button-down shirt, some fabric scissors, a little horsehair trim & a sewing machine to create this voluptuous, fabulous dress that screams Spring fashion! This technique can also be used on straight dresses if you're not feeling the button-down look. I can't wait to see what y'all create! ✨
    If you try my DIYs, make sure to tag me on my socials!

      @lestranged 3 роки тому +4

      My back would kill me if I worked on the floor. Nobody has room for a dedicated 'fancy' cutting table but any kitchen table can be used as a cutting table. You can get folding cardboard cutting mats for very cheap and I put it on top of my kitchen table. (or I use my teflon rotary cutting mat if i am using a rotary cutter). The cardboard one is bigger and works fine for cutting with scissors. Save your back, save your floor and rug. You will thank yourself when you get older. That's keeping it super real!

    I think the word you mean is godet, pronounced "go-day"
    There is a word gore which is usually a pattern piece that has a flare when 4 or more pieces are sewn together to make a flared hem on a skirt. Godets are usually inserted like you did and are added at hem to give a flouncy look, as you said.
    Great how to video as usual and beautifully done !! 👏

    • @lestranged
      @lestranged 3 роки тому +8

      I think she means GORE (which is the wrong word, as you correctly said , godet is more accurate) but she is saying GORD which makes it very confusing. Gores are not triangle insets, they are wedge shaped pieces that go all the way from waist to hem to make up the skirt. But GORD is nothing, it's a non existent word I don't know where that D came from.

    • @TheDIYDesigner

      hahah yes I am learning that very quickly here in the comments section that they are called GORE, or GORES for plural or a GORED Skirt. Some are saying Godets but most are saying Gore. I dunno lol The negatives of being Self taught...I screw up the technical/proper stuff all the time.

      @@TheDIYDesigner Most are saying "gores" because they're just correcting the pronunciation. But if you do some research you can learn the difference between gores and godets. Gores are wedge shaped pieces that go from waist to hem, multiple gores make up the entire skirt. Godets are triangle shaped pieces that are inset into the bottom of a skirt.

Hoping I can get to it, and hoping it turns out fine. Never done anything like this before. I failed in love with you and your work, since you made the zip away skirt. Well, you can cut the upper shirt lower then at the waist - creating a 'drop waist' effect. Or you can insert a (matching or contrasting) strip for a 'belt effect'.
      Just google 'drop waist shirt dress' for ideas - it's a style I personally love, although I have never made/bought one with such a voluminous skirt. You probably can't go too low with the waist seam with this kind of skirt, without it looking odd.
      Or just buy a yard of fabric and cut the skirt from that in whatever length you want. It's the upper part, where upcycling really saves you a lot of time and effort, the skirt you can just as well cut from plain fabric (or maybe you can find suitable bed linen, if you're dead set on only using second hand materials).

      Just finished watching and, well, you need extra fabric for the gores anyway, right?
      So it's not even much of a bother, to cut the rest of the skirt part from that as well.
      Buy only one shirt, cut off the shirt, where you want the waist seam to be, lay the lower part on your extra fabric and use it like pattern piece, to cut a somewhat longer version.
      If you need the center front seam to open, to get into the finished dress, you can use snaps instead of buttons and buttonholes, if you're not comfortable making those.
      Boom, done 😉

    Cute, flirty and my favorite style of dress...the shirt dress. Total lifesaver for anyone, who isn't blessed with a perfect figure 😉.
    Plus, men's shirts are always such nice quality! I'm in!

    I think it might be a fabric saver if you cut the skirt to the shortest length of the shirt or add to the shorter parts first, you would have a seam line but it would match the other strips so look more like a detail than an accidental seam. Essentially what you did was quarter circles to attach to each slit (for those who prefer to draw up a pattern) if you use two slits lengths, you only need two pattern pieces, if you make more slits, at a three different lengths, it’s three quarter circles.
    I love the way this way of doing it would also allow for you to have the skirt section a completely different colour. Maybe light denim on top and floral on the bottom, monochromatic (white top, black skirt).
    This is really versatile! 💖💖💖
    Thanks for the inspiration and your method tute! 👍

    I believe the proper sewing term for the inset pieces of fabric is "godet"

      hahah yes I am learning that very quickly here in the comments section that they are called GORE, or GORES for plural or a GORED Skirt. Some are saying Godets but most are saying Gore. I dunno lol The negatives of being Self taught...I screw up the technical/proper stuff all the time.

    I think doing the multicolor is easier than you were thinking. I am going to try it, and let you know. I have been dreaming of doing something similar with a long dress. Looking at yours, gave me an easier idea. I will send a picture if it works.

    So I gotta say that is a really cool way to use horsehair. Normally it is used to not be visible (usually it is folded back and stitched down on the underside of the outer fabric). I love the look of it visible, gives texture to the dress and pulls the eye to an interesting hem!❤️❤️

    Hi Orly, you are such an inspiration to me and everyone out there who loves designing but could never make it a profession. Your videos always encourage me to bring back the old me who would customize her dresses. With life getting so busy I had left that part of mine somewhere behind but after watching so many of your videos since I started following you, I have finally decided to buy me a sewing machine and do what my heart desires cuz that is what keeps me excited. Thank you so so much 🤗🤗🤗I would love to send you the pictures of whatever projects I do. I admire you a lot for keeping up that energy and positivity in all your videos....I can't appreciate you enough for making us believe that we need not to be rich in order to own trendy and beautiful clothes....being a girl born in middle class family I have always put my priorities first and have never gone for upto date clothes but now since I found you, my mind is flooded with ideas. I wish you all the best and happiness....sending you lots of love and a quick question if you could please suggest a good affordable sewing machine, I live in New York....
    Thank you once again❤️❤️😊😊
