Drew Fortune thanks for the react with Amy. The Legend of 1997 version is insane. The chorus you hear in this song, it's the audience going nuts. When the side girls jump, the ENTIRE audience jumps. I will say that I was never so excited to see a react video than when this one popped up with Amy.
Just for comparison, two live versions of this song: ua-cam.com/video/I2vuKOmd1js/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/QEsOaMbNFww/v-deo.html Their energy on stage can't be overstated ;-) If you go for Karate next, best option is still Download 2016, avoid Glastonbury 2019, it has an awful mix as you already checked on PA PA YA!! But if you choose to go for IDZ, aka Ijime, Dame, Zettai, you can pick the official Sonisphere 2014, it's the most recurring one for good reasons or go with this one, same year at the Forum, smaller venue but great crowd: ua-cam.com/video/-zR2_CC9Xho/v-deo.html not many people know this is on the Tube ;-)
juckonator it is good lol. You have to find the right videos tho. Go to the babymetal subreddit and find the google spreadsheet on the right side toolbar. It shows you most of the official livestreams to all of the big live concerts they did and you’ll understand what I mean. Most of the good vids are on dailymotion or other sites because UA-cam removes them for copyright reasons
Drew, live performances are where they really shine. This performance live is something to behold, with a crazy crowd. If you need links to exact vids, ask and we will deliver :)
Drew and Amy! Great Reaction! If there is ever a choice between the music video and a live performance, ALWAYS ALWAYS choose the live performances for BABYMETAL! "Headbanger!" is a song about a girl going to her first metal concert on her 15th birthday. The lyrics to this song are really good: "Now the time has come. I no longer hesitate. I hold my discount railway tickets tightly. To the east, to the west, to the south, to the north. Today also I rush to the very front of center stage. [...] With the legendary long black hair disordered and gorgeous, blooming crazily this flower will soon fruitlessly disappear. It'll never come back again and it's such a short time. I etch in my heart this special night of my fifteen." There's a couple things that get lost in the translation. They use an uncommon pronunciation for 15 "ichi-go", literally "one five" instead of the "jyuu-go" fifteen. They do this because "ichigo" is a homonym with "strawberry" as a way to emphasize the girl blooming and the fruit lyrics make more sense. There's much more but you get the idea. You're absolutely right that some stuff gets lost when translated.
The really cool thing is that they can _also_ watch that. There's not a rule that prevents anyone from reacting to the MVs and live performances. First they watch the whispered "ki-e-ro" on the album version, and then they get to see the shouted "KI-E-RO!" by the live audience. :D
Good one - and to Amy - welcome to Babymetal. There are many live versions of Headbanger and every one of them is worth seeing (they change them up all the time). Live at Legend 1997 (Su-metal's 16th birthday in December 2013) is always good, for an even older version from 2012 and the very first appearance of the Kami Band, live at Legend I. Another showing just how Yui and Moa could work the crowd is live at Budokan Black Night. Now you have seen the official video pick any of these and see why, good as the official videos are, we tell you to watch their live shows.
Yui-metal and Moa-metal also wrote the lyrics to 4 no Uta (a song about the number 4), which is definitely one of their funnier songs. They made it up while on tour and would keep singing it, annoying the staff. Eventually it got turned into a full song!
You want to read lyrics? Read the translations of Megitsune, Ijime Dame Zettai, Rondo of Nightmare, Akatsuki, Tamashii no Refrain.... you will find something to like. Even "Gimme Chocolate" is great, when you know where it is coming from.
She gets it. One of the goals of the band is to open up metal to people who wouldn't listen to it. Genius. Their producer is an full blown metal head and you can tell he respects the genre.
Welcome Amy! Everyone has been waiting with bated breath for your arrival. Note that no two Baby Metal songs are alike. There are pop tunes, metal tunes, solos. Some people like the versions that start with long band intros, some like solos by SU, the lead singer, some like their earlier work while others like their later work. In general the live versions are always better than the studio official vids. I look forward to your reaction.
I also think _Megitsune,_ _Ijime, Dame, Zettai,_ _Karate,_ and _The One_ are quite meaningful, even if they aren't particularly obscured in "deepness". I don't think it's always necessary in order to be metal. Consider _Kill 'Em All. Just how _deep_ is anything on that album? Plenty of metal bands have their share of songs that aren't really "deep". It doesn't stop them from possibly being meaningful.
Amazing how Baby Metal's videos/music from Long Ago still leaves an imprint amongst us newbies in 2019. I fell down the Fox Hole in April.2019, and HEADBANGER is in the top 5 of my Baby Metal playlist. LOL! The live performance of this jam at Makuhari Messe from YEARS ago was all the proof I needed to genuinely Respect everything this group has accomplished & continue to accomplish. Baby Metal indeed has the Power of Music. Many thank yous for sharing!
This is BABYMETAL!!! So darn good, kawaii and heavy...You should try their newer songs; PAPAYA and/or Shanti Shanti Shanti...or maybe some of their older greats like: Rondo Of Nightmare, YAVA and GJ!
Yeah, this video is definitely one of their more out-there ones, but it is just so damned fun! And this one was written for Su-Metal (Nakamoto Suzuka) for her 15th birthday.
⚡ 💀 💕 / 🤘 There are some of their older songs they haven't performed in quite a while, but they just did 'Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!!!' earlier this month at both Summer Sonic Festivals (Tokyo and Osaka). The lyrics for this one are actually pretty interesting. It's about a fifteen year old girl going to her first heavy concert, and what it meant to her. Many of their songs have meaningful lyrics, but 'Gimme Chocolate!!' was just designed to be catchy, so that one is an exception. As Su has confirmed in interviews, that song is about wanting chocolate, but being a little concerned about gaining weight. She has said that it has nothing to do with eating disorders, or any of the other interpretations floating around on the internet.
I don't pay much attention to the lyrics, but many of them are very deep with lots of hidden meaning. Duane metal has a youtube channel where he analyzes the words and teaches you Japanese at the same time.
Always do the live versions I'd say. The studio versions are a bit over-produced and a little hollow in the production style compared to the raw energy of live. It would of course be great for all the people making suggestions to link or name a specific show. For headbanger I would have gone for Budokan Red Night, as it's a got a little bit of a legendary status around it :) For singing along look for the lyrics in romaji - these are the japanese words but spelt in English letters. You won't understand it but you'll be able to sing it!
Part of the lyrics to this awesome song. If you sing along. You'll know right where they belong: WITH RAVEN HAIR, TANGLED EVERYWHERE, LEGENDARY GORGEOUSLY. THIS FLOWER SOON DISAPPEARS FROM ME. FRUITLESS, BLOOMING CRAZILY. IT'S LEAVING ME, WONT COME BACK AGAIN. SUDDENLY IT'S VANISHING. BUT I WON'T FORGET ETCHED IN MY HEART THIS SPECIAL NIGHT MY FIFTEENTH. I'M JUMPING, DANCING IN THE AIR. HEADBANGEEERRR!
The name Baby Metal is not because they were young when it started, but because it was a new type of metal in its infancy which combines metal and Kawai pop (K-pop). Love their music. So fresh and explosive. So much fun.
This was the first Babymetal video I saw/heard and it was basically made to be a first interaction. This video blends the empowerment aspect with the normal metal stuff like demons and gods and possession and introduces both the ideal stuff and the metalheads.
That's great, glad you both enjoyed it! I'm actually glad you reacted to the MV first. Now you'll get the callback when you see neckbraces (which are in turn a reference to X-Japan's drummer Yoshiki) involved with BabyMetal. I agree that you should also watch live versions, but it doesn't have to be one or the other, it can be both. Despite all the clamoring about live performances, neither one is a replacement for the other. I think they're both important because the live gives you more of their energy, but the album version MVs tend to present a better close-up on their personality. Also, keep in mind that just because you've seen one performance of a song doesn't mean you've seen it all (even for just that song). :D I'd argue that there are more "deep lyrics" on BabyMetal's first album than there are on Metallica's first album. I don't think that necessarily takes away from or adds to the meaningfulness or metalness of either one, though. BabyMetal isn't meant to largely be "super cereal, you guys" anyway, but neither does that mean they're just shallow and on-the-nose.
Whatever it is about the nature of Babymetal i think your Granny would find something to like too. Karate should be good. Looking forward to that but go and do the live version of 'Headbanger' from the Legend 1997 show. i found the official version video tame compared to the live version.
You should react to Babymetal performance at metrorock 2015, that was epic, I mean every Babymetal concert in Japan is epic, but metrorock 2015 was insane 🤘🏻
"How it all started" is a fascinating story in itself. Kinda like movie waiting to be made. BTW - I still think "Megitsune" music video would be more interesting in this particular situation.
Fun fact. At one of their concerts they were handing over neckbraces with lights in them. The venue was MASSIVE with made for an overwhelming effect when they panned out showing the crowed in the dark with only those lights visible
The whole Japanese esthetic in making movies and videos is totally different from what we Westerners are expecting which is what makes them so enjoyable. Along with the music blending the J-pop and Metal it is a unique experience.
Great review and your thoughts about translations and how the meaning gets lost. Love the shock of Amy's eyes on the opening note!! 😲. Your mics are working fantastic and sounds awesome.
I get what you were saying about after getting over that first shock factor. However I would recommend megitsune by babymetal and it does sorta translate back into English meaning wise if you look up the lyrics
After this, you should watch the live version of Legend 1997. You'll see why there are many people suggesting the live version than the MV As for the song Megitsune you should watch the MV first. Then, if you want, watch the live version 🤘🦊
I like this version of Headbanger because it portrays the fantasy of a 15-year old daughter of a middle-class family. In that role, Suzuka never leaves her bedroom. When she starts, it’s daytime and she fantasizes until night. I wonder if she had any idea we’d still be watching this video nearly a decade later or how many stages she would end up dancing on.
I forgot how mad the music video was for Headbanger 😂 The live version is mad too ofc, but somehow it makes more sense? I guess it's got more refined over the years 🤘🏼
Definitely live versions is the way to go...09. BABYMETAL - Headbangeeeeerrrrr!! "Legend Z" (Live at Zepp Tokyo 21.02.2013), is in my opinion the best live version out there.
Great reaction with Amy,,, could i request that you react to Babymetal "Amore live at Wembley arena" as it showcases their huge fanbase and Su, s vocal performance 👍🦊🙅♀️🙅♀️🙅♀️🚀
The group came from another Japanese idol group called sakura gakuin, and they were known as the heavy music club. You should check out some sakura gakuin, very wholesome fun Japanese idol music!
I've seen and watched a few of your vids that popped up on recommended. Like your personality and you popped up again so might aswell subscribe. Much love from Yorkshire England fella
These songs are fine but you're missing all the classics. Megitsune, Catch Me if You Can, No More Bullying, Rondo of Nightmare. Also, watch them live in Japan, It's so much better than their official music videos.
Personally, I don't like their studio versions, producers always try to "fix" SU voice, which is like photoshopping Leonardo ... IMHO. Still so happy you both enjoyed it :-)
Agree, but the videos show some absolutely great dramatic highlights like Su pulling out a knife blade in Megitsune and Moa catching a fly in Karate. The highlights are significant in presenting the message.
Also the song is about 15 years old first metal concert but the vid also tributes to Yoshiki from X-Japan, who was injured himself and need to wear that neck brace.
It's tough to say when you say, "they are there for the girls" but if they were, they wouldn't be in the pit or crowd surfing. The band itself is amazing, please listent to Rondo of Nightmare (boudokan black night)
I think this is one of the better songs from the 1st album but Onedari Daisakusen is still my favorite off of it. I tend to like the ones where Moa & Yui have the majority of the vocals the most.
Babymetal - phonetically, in Japanese: Bebimetaru - is sort of a play on words with Heavymetal: Hebimetaru. "be" and "he" are written almost the same way in Japanese.
Gimme Chocolate is kinda a bad example of looking up the lyrics for.. you kind of have the impression it's just shallow meaningless stuff right now, but a lot of songs aren't like that at all. I would recommend searching youtube for "duane metal", on his channel he explains the lyrics to you in English (he's Japanese) Eg. for this song: ua-cam.com/video/AnVAeXlOX24/v-deo.html (part 1, there are 5 parts explaining the lyrics) PS: I never understand why "everyone" has heard of kpop but not jpop, jpop has been around a LOT longer than kpop!! It's much more diverse and deep.. just knowing kpop is like going to Niagara Falls, finding a drinking fountain right next to it.. then wondering where this huge waterfall is supposed to be? Nobody in the west had really heard of kpop until about 10-12 years ago xD
Great reaction like allways (first time I see your girl with you) but better had choosen the live version @ awesome stage show on her 16th B-day.......she celebrated all b-days with a concert and on this special one she celebrated the change from Metal-Baby 2 Metal-Woman (on the Song "Death" she got even cruzified and reborn) ;) Give it a try as well mate!
Yo people, can we hit 500 likes in 24 hours? Karate Reaction coming soon - make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss out!🙌🏻🔥

You should react the live song
This song was about sneaking out to your first metal show, at the age of 15.
You should see this song on live...
All babymetal songs more good on live
The live show in Houston was goddamn amazing
Though it was the second show after they lost Yui, which was a blow...but didn't stop them

I like this one the most ua-cam.com/video/I2vuKOmd1js/v-deo.html
My thoughts exactly 🤘
Babymetal are unique artists, and live is where their true masterpieces are.
The live version of this way better! THE BAND, THE CROWD, THE ATMOSPHERE, THE PRODUCTION are all mental!
Most of their lyrics are on subjects of empowerment & perseverance.
Yui-metal and Moa-metal also wrote the lyrics to 4 no Uta (a song about the number 4), which is definitely one of their funnier songs. They made it up while on tour and would keep singing it, annoying the staff. Eventually it got turned into a full song!

You need to do the live versions (except maybe Karate, which is a great video that can keep up to the live version.)
Definitely live versions is the way to go...09. BABYMETAL - Headbangeeeeerrrrr!! "Legend Z" (Live at Zepp Tokyo 21.02.2013), is in my opinion the best live version out there.
There is a vid out there when Yui turned 15, Su gave her the Mic & Yui did the second half of the song.

Great reaction with Amy,,, could i request that you react to Babymetal "Amore live at Wembley arena" as it showcases their huge fanbase and Su, s vocal performance 👍🦊🙅♀️🙅♀️🙅♀️🚀
It’s better if you watch the live versions.
More sibling reactions! you two are lovely
You should react to their Starlight music video, Starlight was a tribute to their guitarist who had died
The group came from another Japanese idol group called sakura gakuin, and they were known as the heavy music club. You should check out some sakura gakuin, very wholesome fun Japanese idol music!
What a fucking song!
No you should have done one of the live versions!!!!
"Drew: [Babymetal is worth listening to] "... "Amy: [I Agree] "
Brought to You by Monster Energy. It's like Inception in a can.
Ha! Great to have sis reaction. Did you ever try Otoboke Beaver? Love is Short.
It's tough to say when you say, "they are there for the girls" but if they were, they wouldn't be in the pit or crowd surfing. The band itself is amazing, please listent to Rondo of Nightmare (boudokan black night)
please react to more of the live shows, they are mostly more fun to watch
Oh that's not the live version :(
Don't worry, it still exists, and they can react to it, too.
"be" and "he" are written almost the same way in Japanese.
hahah bem hilário a face da menina com algumas cenas do vídeo. Parabéns pelo trabalho.
I've tried lavalier mics before but how do you deal with the echo from overlapping voices from let's say you're voice picked up by her mic?
Need to watch the one, distortion, and megitsune from baby metal
Gimme Chocolate is kinda a bad example of looking up the lyrics for.. you kind of have the impression it's just shallow meaningless stuff right now, but a lot of songs aren't like that at all. I would recommend searching youtube for "duane metal", on his channel he explains the lyrics to you in English (he's Japanese) Eg. for this song: ua-cam.com/video/AnVAeXlOX24/v-deo.html (part 1, there are 5 parts explaining the lyrics)
PS: I never understand why "everyone" has heard of kpop but not jpop, jpop has been around a LOT longer than kpop!!
Love that
Great reaction. You should react to some of their live shows. 😁
