Willys Jeep MB 80th Anniversary 1941-2021
RUBBER TIRES - COLOR INSTRUCTION SHEET
In 1940, after World War II had broken out, the US general staff ordered various factories to design a light multi-purpose vehicle with all-wheel drive. The American Bantam Company, Willys Overland, and Ford Motor Co. competed. Willys prototype was chosen, which, after an initial run of 1500 vehicles, went into mass production at the beginning of 1941 and reached a total output of 640.000 units out of which 277.000 pieces were produced by Ford under a licensing agreement. This shows that the Jeep was the most widely produced light vehicle of the war industry during World War II.
Type: Classic and modern cars
Period: Second World War

Model Dim.: 13.8 cm
Italeri 3635 Model Rectifier Corporation MRC
The Willys MB and the Ford GPW, both formally called the U.S. Army Truck, 1⁄4-ton, 4×4, Command Reconnaissance,[4][5][page needed] commonly known as the Willys Jeep[nb 3], Jeep, or jeep,[7] and sometimes referred to by its supply catalogue designation G503,[nb 4] were highly successful American off-road capable light military utility vehicles built in large numbers to a standardized design for the United States and other Allied forces in World War II from 1941 to 1945.
The jeep became the primary light wheeled transport vehicle of the United States military and its allies, with President Eisenhower once calling it "one of three decisive weapons the U.S. had during WWII."[8] It was the world's first mass-produced four-wheel drive car; almost 650,000 units were built, constituting a quarter of the total U.S. non-combat motor vehicles produced during the war,[nb 5] and almost two-thirds of the 988,000 light 4WD vehicles produced, counted together with the Dodge WC series. Large numbers of jeeps were provided to U.S. allies, including Soviet Union at the time - aside from large amounts of 11⁄2- and 21⁄2-ton trucks, some 50,000 1⁄4-ton jeeps and 25,000 3⁄4-ton Dodges were shipped to Russia during WWII - another example of how the Allies out-produced the Axis.[11]
Historian Charles K. Hyde wrote: "In many respects, the jeep became the iconic vehicle of World War II, with an almost mythological reputation of toughness, durability, and versatility."[9] Not only did it become the workhorse of the American military, as it replaced the use of horses and other draft animals (still heavily used in World War I) in every role, from cavalry units to supply trains, but improvised field modifications also made the jeep capable of just about any other function G.I.s could think of.[12] Moreover: military jeeps were adopted by countries all over the world, to this day - so much that they have become the most widely used and recognizable military vehicle in history.[13]
Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe in World War II, wrote in his memoirs that most senior officers regarded it as one of the five pieces of equipment most vital to success in Africa and Europe[nb 6] General George Marshall, Chief of Staff of the US Army during the war, called the vehicle "America's greatest contribution to modern warfare."[15][16][17] In 1991, the MB Jeep was designated an "International Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark" by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.[2]
After WWII, the original jeep continued to serve, in the Korean War and other conflicts, until it was updated in the form of the M38 Willys MC and M38A1 Willys MD (in 1949 and 1952 respectively), and received a complete redesign by Ford in the form of the 1960-introduced M151 jeep. Willys turned the MB into the civilian Jeep CJ-2A.
The success of the jeep inspired both an entire category of recreational 4WDs and SUVs, making "four-wheel drive" a household term, and numerous incarnations of military light utility vehicles. In 2010, the American Enterprise Institute called the jeep "one of the most influential designs in automotive history". Its "sardine tin on wheels" silhouette and slotted grille are perhaps even more instantly recognizable than the VW Beetle and has evolved into the currently produced Jeep Wrangler long after the original Jeep design
It's more than a hobby!😀
This hobby saved my life and gave me a purpose to be HAPPY again 👍 🌈🌞
It's amazing how something so small can have such a big impact on your life😄 I was clinically depressed and diagnosed with asbergers syndrome/bi polar.. I started watching RC videos in 2010 and that led to modeling videos 😊 I've always enjoyed crafting and drawing and this is like an extention of that.. I have a room totally dedicated to displaying all my RC's and model 1:24/25 vehicles 😀 the reason this hobby is so Great is it can be anything your imagination can think of🌈 Planes, Trains, Boats, Drones, Trucks, Hot-rods, Nitros, Customs, Bodyshells, Kits or Ready to runs whatever floats your boat its all good if it brightens your day and u can look back and remember good memories that's what this hobby is!! 😀💯 RC an Modelling Saved my life Thankyou dude your Epic never forget..
Glad you have found a hobby that also helps you!
The jeep is going to look awesome when you get it done ....
An interesting little bit of trivia about the WWII land vehicles. These Jeeps and some of the trucks were built at the factories here in the U.S. - then sent to another company
that would dis-assemble them and put them in crates to be shipped to the war areas. Once they arrived, there would be a crew assigned to re-assemble them and put them into
operation. I saw a statistic that said it would take these guys about 45 minutes to assemble a Jeep and less than two hours to assemble a 2 1/2 ton truck. Another amazing
fact was that if the vehicles would have been shipped fully built - they would have only been able to fit about a third as many on the cargo ship. Part of what won the war !
Thanks for stopping by!
Jeeps were never packed in crates. This is an urban myth perpetrated after a photograph emerged of a stowage and shipping trial at either New York or San Francisco where jeeps were crated. The method was never adopted as it was unnecessary and time Consuming. The transport methods used are well documented.
There's a couple cool videos of disassembly/assembly teams that break these jeeps down and build them again in just a couple minutes. We used to design military equipment for simplicity of maintenance and logistics.
For those who don't know the yellow circle around the star is a special paint that changes to red when there is a chemical attack to warn soldiers. It also help allied Bobbers identify allies and prevent them for being mistaken for German vehicles.
Cool info!
Incredible build Chris, I'm so glad to see another 1/24- 1/25 scale jeep. This goes on the must have list!!
Thanks for stopping by!
Lol, this music playing during the painting of the model is so appropriate!
Great video as always Chris. See ya in that next review!
Thanks for stopping by!
Nice old kit from the mid 1980's
Thanks for stopping by!
Nice build as always! Thank your grandpa for his service!
Thank you!
When I was in the Seabees 78-83 we still were driving these older model Jeeps. A far cry from the Hum Vees .Another fine job.
Thanks for stopping by!
Love It Chris Thanks For Sharing n God Bless All !!
My first duty assignment at Ft Hood was company commanders driver. I drove a jeep for a while then we transitioned to the hmmwv.
I can smell that jeep just watching the video
Thanks for stopping by!
@@hpiguy thanks for the great videos and encouragement to just enjoy the hobby.
Very incredible and intriguing build Chris! Really digging the chassis with engine and interior detail! Awesome Olive Drab coloring too! Thank Grandpa for his service!
Good kit to build, you can do so many cool things with it!! 👍👍👍
Thank you 🤗
While I'm not WW II old, I was at mechanic school at Camp Lejeune, North Caroline as a young Marine Lance Corporal in 1977 working on the old M151 MUTT, the grandson of this one, with the split front window from back in Vietnam in the mid to late sixties. It wasn't until I reported to my unit that we had the M151A1 one piece windshield fron the early seventies.
Outstanding video and presentation.
I like to watch the assembly part of the videos now. Very cool .
Glad you like it!
I’m having flashbacks of the italeri fire Jeep while watching this 😔.
Great review and build. I drove these when I was stationed at Clark AB, Philippines working Quad Agency Patrol (Town Patrol) from 87-89. We were driving the older 65-69 model years they got out of WRM (War Readiness Material). Mechanics loved working on these as they were so easy and simple. I'll have to get one of these ... unfortunately there are no small decals of the QAP emblem that we had. There was also one that was modified to remove the rear seat and a pole was attached with two C-130 Landing Lights. When I worked on base before QAP, we used this to search the fields for "intruders". Man, did they light up a field. 😀

HAHAHAHA I love this Jeep! my uncle had one from somewhere (IDK where he got it from). I can tell you the seats in that thing are NOT comfortable, it was not made to be comfortable. I think some were used for medical transport in the Korean war and others used for general travel and so on. Those Jeeps can run forever it seemed. Easy maintenance and overall very good and durable. Not sure if he still has it, but if he does have it, I'm sure it still runs.

Great tutorial and, as always, delicious music. I only build civilian cars, but you inspired me to try this Jeep. Thanks for sharing. Regards from Brasil.
Thanks for stopping by!
Finally a decent WW2 jeep in a nice scale. Looks great Chris
Thanks for stopping by!
Another very neat build!
In grade 8 I can remember watching an documentary of the history of jeeps. There was an interview with a retired navy saler. As I can remember the navy was not officially given jeeps. However if an army jeep happened to show at an peer it's diver would be distracted. Than when he got back his jeep would be gone. And in its place an jeep in navy clours
Nice job Chris. I will be picking this one up. Looks like it was a lot of fun. Thank you for your dedication to the build.
Thanks for stopping by!
Nice build like the finish project
Funny thing about this kit is that it is actually a Ford frame with the square front cross member on the frame and the tub appears to be a Willys because the tool box lids are not embossed.
I love when you do military stuff and play that men's choir ,I could listen to them for hours. I have the same kit in 1/35 scale but with the added detail this is a must have for me. Great build as always!👍👍🇨🇦
Thanks for stopping by!
Very well done.
Thank you kindly!
Great kit to go with an Airfix 1/24th P-51D :-)
Been waiting for a large scale kit kit of the Willys, can't wait to build it. Also been wishing you would post your vids in playlists, takes a looong time to find things. Thanks.

Love it!
beautifull build!
Congrats Chris
Okay
I may be buying one of these
I have a 43 GPW (Ford)
The frame. The axles. I've rebuilt those Dana 23s.the T-84 Transmission, dand 18 Trans case. The l134 engine.
This kit is home

I really enjoyed watching this build. I really like that type of Jeep! 👍🏼🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed it!
She's beautiful Chris another one
Thanks for stopping by!
That turned out really great Chris looks awesome 👍👍
Thanks for stopping by!
That looks great - just the right amount of dirt on it, to make it look real.
Thanks for stopping by!
Nice build. Lots and lots of options. I had no idea this kit existed until today. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for stopping by!
Tile grout and Matt Modge Podge works great. ....................
Amazing work Chris! Looks so realistic ☺️👍👏👏
Proper job 👍🏻
I really enjoy your videos. This is the most accurate 1/24 scale Willys Jeep ever made. I have built a couple of these when they were released under the Testors name back in the 80s and one very recently. The addition of the rubber tires is great, I going to have to pick this one up.
Thanks for stopping by!
Nice build.
I'm glad you like it!
I'm diggin' the new camera set. Much wider stage for "us" the viewers. And it HAS to be more comfortable for you as the builder (building over the instructions is a nice touch too). Oh, and the jeep is stunning as well. Thanks again for all you do.
Thanks man!
Very nice build, I also chose the larger 1/25 AMT/ERTL when I built a Willys jeep.
Thanks for stopping by!
Great job Chris , got to snag me one of these
You should!
Nice job on this one Chris as usual
I appreciate that!
I've used cheap tissue and matte clear and turned out good. But I prefer the Hasegawa 1/24 Willys.
JEEP.. Just Enough Essential Parts
LOL
Nice work
Thanks for stopping by!
Belo Kit, 👍
Thanks for stopping by!
Interesting and a great build. But a sea shanty for an army vehicle?
Damn, said I wouldn't buy anything this month........incoming!
Chris, you’ve done it again!!! Fantastic great looking kit I have to have one. Thanks for the review!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome kit , great work as always.
What a great 👍 finish .
Great tip with the sand .
👍👍👍👍👍👍

Does this model have a wheelbase of 5.5 inches? Lovely build HPI Guys
this would make a cool model of the 1956 Willys Surrey Gala Jeep ether in pink and white, blue and white or green and white.
these were used in Hawaii.
MPC makes a kit of the surrey. I built it on here some time ago, but as the Godzilla Jeep.
Hi Chris,
Can you give us a list of all the paints you used for painting the jeep?
Cheers,
Rod
Nice useful kit , bit of a different format from you this time, we don't usually see you builing the model, nice to see. Thank you for your really entertaining videos, I really enjoy them and the great tips
My favorite of any of your builds! Could be that I just bought. 2021 Jeep Gladiator Willys!! 😂
Thanks for stopping by!
Great job 👏 👍 so enjoy your videos 📹 😊 please keep them coming 🙏 👍 and here to help get your videos 📹 😉 out to everyone....don't let a hodag get you lol
Wow, I wanted a 1/24, non-curbside MB Jeep for so long, I'm surprised I didn't see this one coming! I'll get one for sure! Now, just hoping someone eventually makes an XJ Jeep Cherokee kit to add even more Jeep content!
Thanks for stopping by!
But do they taste like rubber? Great vid, keep em coming, I'll keep watching.
Thanks Bob!
I’ve heard you say in past videos you “slather parts in bondene”, you weren’t kidding when you said that hahahaha. I kid I kid hahaha
Yup, I like a strong bond that will not fail.
This one is similar to the M.A.S.H.jeep that I built 12 years ago.
The Jeep looks really great. Love your channel I watch whenever I can. Whare do you like to buy your kits?
Thanks!
Links in description for the places to buy the kits I review. Thanks!
Is that a home made paint booth and where did you get those turn tables? And if so how did you make it
Hey Chris, wasn't sure how to email you directly, so I chose to comment here. Wanted to let you know I found someone on FB marketplace using photos of your Autocar dump truck build to advertise selling the kit. Just thought you ought to know. Oh, and nice build by the way!
Yes, hundreds of people steal my images, remove my watermarks and use them to sell stuff online.
FB, Ebay, Amazon, etc refuse to take the ads down for copyright violations since they make money on them.
YT is the only place that will pull videos stolen from others.
Nothing I can do about it unfortunately.
Thanks for keeping an eye out and avoid those sellers, they are all scammers that won't send you anything.
@@hpiguy alright, sorry it can't be taken down. I just wanted to let you know. And i don't buy anything on Marketplace anyway, I just like to browse, i buy all of my model kits in person :)
Sure wish they included 50 cal. option
Holy crap i just ordered this kit what are the odds? lol
Thanks for stopping by!
Man that would be good for a Ratrod or parts of it anyways. I just hate that it’s 60 bucks, dang! Oh well….. can’t win em all don’t reckon. lol! But anywho, good stuff as always buddy, always! I’m gonna get at least one.
Enjoy Doug!
@@hpiguy - thank you buddy! Preciate that! You too!
The more parts the better; it's the building that's fun, the painting that sucks.
Thanks for stopping by!
This came out very nicely! Is this an all new tool or an old Esci model?
I'm not sure of the origins but they have been taking care of the molds whoever they are.
You can tell, that the officers, are not smart. Riding in a vehicle, with a large target on the hood, so the enemy knows who to take out.
I need to find Marine Corps, Military Police, Viet Nam decals. Make that version.
Yeah! I'm sure 1/35 decals exist and can be scaled up if a person has a printer.
✌🏻O|||||||O✌🏻

I love Jeeps❤️ can’t wait to see your build and the options you choose. 👍🏻🏁
