Nice flight and scenery! I just realized now, after watching your video, that when you do long range stuff (whether using a plane or quadcopter), you should be prepared to lose your stuff in case it crashes in inaccessible locations. I guess LR is not for me. I get jittery when I fly over 1 meter wide stream. hehe
Yeah, I got over that A LONG time ago... actually every time you fly you should be prepared for that... makes all of this so much easier and enjoyable! :)
Thank you! The radar is always on, it is the main one used for the airport! Thing is, it mostly operates on 1.2-1.3Ghz, which doesn't seem to affect 900Mhz as much as 900Mhz affects 1.2-1.3 video systems!
Hate to put you down, but thats a VOR, and a weather radar. which transmit on 108 and 2.4/5.8 respectively. so there should be no issues if you are on 816mhz. might be a different story if it was 2.4 however
Actually I've been there on 2.4Ghz radio, and I have been there a few times on 5.8Ghz video now... and I've had no problems with those frequencies! A friend of mine has some gear he used to measure what this operates on, and it was spilling out quite a lot of interference around the 1.2Ghz band.
I have the R9 Slim mounted on a 6" racer. Will be testing it soon! Want to also put an iNav controller on it, so I can easily send it out far without worrying about it not coming back.
No, this is the airport radar. A friend of mine has tried to fly close there at 1.3Ghz, and the close he got, the worst it got! He verified with an RF analyser that there is a lot of interference coming from it on that band!
Thanks for tips. Looking for the most efficient fpv long range airplane with nose platform for pan/tilt. Considering Talon mini as most obvious choice. Wondering is there any flying wings with big enough nose platform.
Great videos , question pertaining to firmware flashing on the receiver and module. Do u just flash the most up-to-date firmware or all of them. I have asked five different people between today and yesterday no answers yet. May you will he first. Thanks MIke
Hi, when I received the system... back in March or April, I flashed whatever was the newest firmware then, and haven't updated since! I don't see a reason to flash all of them, when the old one is actually erased/replaced by the newer version when the flash is done... so just flash the latest one, but module and receivers need to be on the same version of firmware! :)
@@ArxangelRC I have another question .. I mounted my antennas like yours. I went out 3 miles no problem RSSI staying in the 70S and 80S but as soon as I turn to come home the plane enters a fail safe ..tested twice any advice?
That is not unheard of... it is possible that something is blocking the receiver's view to the ground when you turn the plane around. How high are they above the fuselage?
@@ArxangelRC Well I assume the stock r9 antennas are seven inches, so I have the hot glued to a partial pop cycle stick. And I would or could say its the vertical Fin that would block the majority of that seven inches as I turn , maybe 1-2 inches above the verticals. Can u run a sat a liter receiver on the r9.
You mean "satellite" receiver? A piece of foam should be mostly invisible to the RF signal, so I doubt this particular piece of the plane is the problem! If you are pointing the plane home... and the antennas are at the back of it... it is possible all of the electronics that end up between the receiver's antennas and the ground could be blocking the signal.
I plane on getting the taranis qx7 and this. Im in the u.s. im a bit confused sbout firmware updates that change the frequency? Is there a website with these?
You can download the updates from the FrSky website directly: www.frsky-rc.com/r9m/ Usually the archive has the EU and non-EU firmwares, you just select which one you want to flash to the module. For the US you need the non-EU, or FCC firmware file.
I kept it vertical for the most part... at this close range wouldn't have mattered though... works pretty well even with the antenna's tip pointed in the direction of the plane.
Pierce - BANG SCIENCE He's got an antenna tracker and is remaining within line of sight. Pretty sure he's using a really good set of antennas and has done this a time or two. I'm impressed he's getting this range with only 600mw.
Yes, check the video description, the antenna tracker is linked there. You will also see the Vtx I am using. The antenna I have on the Vtx right now is this pagoda: goo.gl/n3uGyE and on the antenna tracker I have the FR632 receiver: goo.gl/mPonrV which has turned out to be one of the best, and on it I have a home made 8-turn helical, and an IBCrazy 12-turn helical, which arrived all broken and warped... so not really sure which one gets me out to 25kms... but I put both on there every time! Might have to test that some day to check! :)
He is using 2 directional antennas (a patch and a homemade helical) on a sensitive diversity receiver with an antenna tracker. He's also not flying with any obstacle in the way so he doesn't need the object penetration benefits of 2.4 or 1.3.
Im guessing its illegal to run your TX Module at 500 mw output with the EU LBT Firmware....?.....25mw is what you should be doing. It would have been nice to see all the snow in your 5.8G video, rather than snipping small windows.
That was an ugly sight... having the antennas on the ground turned in that direction puts A LOT of buildings between the plane and the ground station, and I was picking up a lot of interference from something operating very close to my frequency! As for the power output, I think 500mW is legal with a HAM licence, besides... around here nobody really cares much about that!
Nice video dude, it's so relaxing to see mountain and city from the sky.
Thanks! :)
Brilliant stuff. I'm happy there's fresh fixed wing content out there. UA-cam is saturated with mini quad content and this is refreshing. Subbed!
Thanks mate! Can't do without them racers... but they will be taking a step back now as these planes are my bigger passion! :D
ArxangelRC Glad to hear! Are you gonna do any Pixhawk/Mission Planner stuff?
What do you mean by that? What stuff?
Beautiful video and has helped me make my mind up about what long range system to go for. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Thanks mate!

Thanks for another great flight! Interesting, I would have expected some influence from the radar. Maybe it wasn't on?
Thank you! The radar is always on, it is the main one used for the airport! Thing is, it mostly operates on 1.2-1.3Ghz, which doesn't seem to affect 900Mhz as much as 900Mhz affects 1.2-1.3 video systems!

It sure was! :)
Thank you for the fast reply.
You are welcome! :)
Cool. Some snow looked orange
Yeah, not sure why that is though! :S

Nice flight and beautiful scenery. Where are you located at?
Thanks! Sofia, Bulgaria! :)
awesome
Thanks! :)
Really awesome!
Thanks.
Good flight!
Thanks mate! :)
Really nice, could you sometimes test this system in a quadcopter?
I have the R9 Slim mounted on a 6" racer. Will be testing it soon! Want to also put an iNav controller on it, so I can easily send it out far without worrying about it not coming back.
I wonder if it's radar or just a radome for a satcom link
Satcom for what though?
Maybe a fire-watch station or similar?

Check video description, its all in there.
Hi. One word, Fantastic... Best regards...
Thanks mate! :)
Love fpv long range.!
So do I! :)
yeah ! so I would like to solve teleflypro issue :-/
Oh dang it... I always forget to take those photos for you! :(
Thanks for tips. Looking for the most efficient fpv long range airplane with nose platform for pan/tilt. Considering Talon mini as most obvious choice. Wondering is there any flying wings with big enough nose platform.
Not really that interested in flying wings... so not much that I can say on that subject... especially when a pan/tilt is concerned!
ArxangelRC which plane in general you think is the most efficient?
Well... the Believer has proven to be one of the more efficient air frames out there for sure: bit.ly/MFE-Believer

your gimbal BG link is dead FYI. aliexpress still sells it if you have a ref agreement with them
Yeah, BG no longer has it! Here is the only Ali listing I was able to find: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/7AUJIEY Might get one or two more myself!

Impressive. I'm jealous again/still :)
Haha, thanks!
So it's safe to use on these UK on those frequencies with LBT firmware?
Should be, yes! :) The LBT is EU legal, and as far as I know, that still includes the UK! :)
Nice! what was orientation of antena on R9M TX?
I kept it vertical for the most part... at this close range wouldn't have mattered though... works pretty well even with the antenna's tip pointed in the direction of the plane.
THX will be interesting to try Moxon antenna. do you plan to upgrade it?
On the transmitter?
So this is on 5.8 ghz? Do you have a booster?
No, just a well pointed, directional antenna on the receiving end: www.myflydream.com/products/d-0/349.html
What flight controller did you use mate
The Clouds has a Micro APM controller, but it is rather outdated now! I do like it... has been working reliably for quite a while now!
How did you flash the R9M with the 868MHz????
Through the Taranis.
Do frsky r9m module is direct fit on flysky 9x???
Yes, I think the module should fit right in!
hello may i ask, what antena you use ? thanks
Where? On the video system?
Video 5.8?
Yes.
Yaaas :)
:)
How do you get that range with 5.8?
