Nice vid Krik. Keep it up. One note from me though. Always fill your bottle pointing down the stream not up. Thus no major contamination flowing down the creek get inside the bottle. Great product. I own it and use it for a year already...
Great video guys. Solid advice about keeping a "clean hand". I have a similar product suggestion for you, the Sport Berkey water bottle. I think it has less capacity (up to 160 refills from any source) but greater filtration capabilities. Berkey says it removes both chemical and heavy metal contaminants, along with pathogens. Berkey doesn't publish micron ratings but I found a very reasonable explanation why on their website. I have used my Sport Berkey to drink water from streams in Central Georgia with no problems. I keep mine in my pack just in case. The cost is around $20 or less. You can get replacement filters but they are almost as much as the whole bottle. I hope this helps. - Bryan
Berkey said their filters were not ok to use when we were under a boil order. Lifestraw says it’s good to go. I was very disappointed that they did not have confidence in their product.
Its a very good idea to have the carabiner attached to the bottle not the lid because maybe the bottle could be lowered into water using cordage if you are at a height from water, great video.
Thanks Krik for another great product review. I like the convenience of the filter inside the bottle. One less thing I have to carry in my pack. I'm sure it'll come in handy to filter this Philly tapwater. 👍
Nice looking product. The only con I have is that the filter displaces to much water when put back in the bottle. I prefer outboard filtration, such as the Frontier Pro, because it can be used from a stream and can be attached to many standard bottle fittings.
"Mmmm....mmmm. Good every time." Isn't that the truth when drinking water from a good water source up in the mountains. It makes you appreciate the convenience of tap water and ruin the taste of it all at the same time. :) - Chris
Just found it on sale at Cabela's at $29.99 until midnight 9/1/14 when it goes back up to $34.99 vs. the $55.95 on Amazon. The Sawyer Personal Water Bottle Filter sells for $35.61 @ Amazon for comparison.
Great video. But i suggest to hold the bottle downstream while filling it. This way there will be less dirt (zand, leaves twigs etc) in the bottle. Other that that, good review, and i agree with the metal container. Would be way better! Keep it going ;)
I totally agree! One needs to protect any gear that must stay clean. Both users and manufacturers usually forget this fundamental necessity. A simple screw-on cap like on a thermos, is a great idea! The standard Life Straw needs a cap, also.
For those that want a metal bottle, Seychelle do one. I actually prefer their plastic bottle as it's lighter and also squeezable. When using the advanced filter it helps alot increasing flow to squeeze it as well as drawing from it. I have about 20 Seychelle filters and six bottles metal and plastic, three Lifestraws, one lifestraw Family (gravity filter that does multi-person volumes and a Lifesaver filter. It's a bit of an (healthy) obsession.
Great review as always guys, a quick question if I may, when the filter wears out do you simply replace it or get a new bottle? ...many thanks and kind regards from London ~Peace~
I agree. I have couple of both the standard and mini sized sawyer filters.. They work very well. As far as this water bottle…I don't know. I don't like the idea of my slightly dirty water soaking a very dirty filter. I know with other water filters you need a method to clean the filter in the field, especially if you have a dirty water supply. I wonder how this works for the smart straw bottle?
dustin king we actually have the sawyer squeeze, before it was a mini, and just picked up a mini the other day. should be doing a video of the mini sooner than later. thanks for watching! - stony
JohnLarry Jerry the life straw is good for 2 microns but the Sawyer filter will do 1 micron which is starting to remove viruses. Plus it is flushable and they say good for 10 000L
Great video. A good idea an all in one product. Are you able to buy replacement filters? Yeah a metal container would be better. Thanks for a good review. atb
Yeah this is funny you said your left hand is your clean hand and you said don't touch the top with your dirty hand then you are touching it with both hands and the drink out of it wow what great advice
This pack produce a big problem: The first time you use it, You start having an unclean bottle. That bottle would no be clean until you are back home and use Alcohol or maybe a Chlorine solution. Thats because you Obviously canT Boil this plastic bottle on Field. I would stay with LifeStraw Filter and a Steel Canteen.
I am going to Monterey Mexico in two weeks and I already have the sawyer squeeze in my B.O.B would you consider me taking the Sawyer or buying the lifestraw ? comment if you read (interested in your opinion) Ps I also got sick the last time I went to Guadalajara Mexico last year
+JohnLarry Jerry All water can potentially contain pathogens. No stream is safe if a dead animal is in the water upstream of you. There would be lots of bacteria flowing your way. Better not to take any chances.
Very interesting stuff. Water filtration is getting better by the month, it seems. Cool idea. As an aside, next time you've got a few minutes, check my most recent video on my channel. The last 10 minutes are about a certain sheath I've been playing with lately :D
I bought this bottle a week ago and loved it however I left standard tap water in it and it tasted horrible, a really nasty plastic flavor almost chemical tasting so I'm considering returning it. If anyone else had a similar experiences or an idea of as to why this is happening please enlighten me. Thanks
+Lv2flair yeah I'm not sure if you can maybe take off the filter so you can just use it as a bottle but I do know that the filters overexposure in water will wear it down faster.
Nice vid Krik. Keep it up. One note from me though. Always fill your bottle pointing down the stream not up. Thus no major contamination flowing down the creek get inside the bottle. Great product. I own it and use it for a year already...

Great suggestion, after I found the berkey, nothing else seems good enough.
Survival On Purpose thanks Brian. We'll have to look into those! - stony
I have a lifestraw Go myself. Really like the product. Will look into the Berkey as well. Great suggestion

Definite tech to have in a traveler's pack. How fast this tech has improved in past few years!!! Available in India @ 22usd.
Nice looking product. The only con I have is that the filter displaces to much water when put back in the bottle. I prefer outboard filtration, such as the Frontier Pro, because it can be used from a stream and can be attached to many standard bottle fittings.
5:38 "The stream you just saw me get from that water." :-)
If anyone was curious, this WILL be fit on a Klean Kanteen/Nalgene, etc.
Like Krik stated, the metal bottle makes this a much more versatile tool.
"Mmmm....mmmm. Good every time." Isn't that the truth when drinking water from a good water source up in the mountains. It makes you appreciate the convenience of tap water and ruin the taste of it all at the same time. :) - Chris
Thanks for the excellent review. I ordered one on Amazon as soon as the video ended :)
How do you store it between uses. How do you clean it? Reference the carbon filter tip.

BigFootWalker1776 we just picked up a sawyer mini a couple weeks ago. we plan on shooting a video of it as well. - stony

Hey. Great video. Does the bottle leak when not upright or while traveling?
Great video. But i suggest to hold the bottle downstream while filling it. This way there will be less dirt (zand, leaves twigs etc) in the bottle.
Other that that, good review, and i agree with the metal container. Would be way better!
Keep it going ;)
Hutjeopdeheij great idea! thanks for sharing! - stony
that is really clever! Damn some ideas you wish you just had them yourself! Cheers ;)
One suggestion - a bite valve cover attached to the lip or even a cap for the whole top to protect the part from accidental contamination.
I totally agree! One needs to protect any gear that must stay clean. Both users and manufacturers usually forget this fundamental necessity. A simple screw-on cap like on a thermos, is a great idea! The standard Life Straw needs a cap, also.
There is a good product for us... ❤️
Kirk, can you try fitting this Go cap over a 40 oz wide mouth klean kanteen? Thx for the great video. Your camera definition is ultra crisp.
Do u need to clean out the filter?

Zed Outdoors Sup Zed. I'm not certain if they sell replacement filters. Sorry. Let me know if you find out. -Krik
dont know if you allready found your answer, but here inNorway they sell the filters separately at least on a sports website I use :)
You should check out the sawyer mini filter system. Better filtration at 0.1 microns, more options on how to filter, and better price point

BlackOwlOutdoors good to hear looking forward to the video
+dustin king Lifestraw filters 999.9999.90 percent or something stupid like that
JohnLarry Jerry the life straw is good for 2 microns but the Sawyer filter will do 1 micron which is starting to remove viruses. Plus it is flushable and they say good for 10 000L
that's definitely a must have piece of kit!
I've been looking for a stainless bottle with filter. Google found me the Camelbak Groove. Have you checked out that one?
Great as always.
Is the straw with bottle easier to pull on than the only-straw version?
Pleased with my purchase after six months of use. Would like to filter larger amts of warmer say ice tea making for instance
Great video!
Got mine for 10bucks at big5 years ago
Need to get a new one!!!!
Maybe go w blue instead of gray
Does the bottle leak when not upright or while traveling?
Great video. A good idea an all in one product. Are you able to buy replacement filters? Yeah a metal container would be better. Thanks for a good review. atb
I have a question did the simple life straw wore out over time like the bottle?
Everyone keeps saying 1000 liters. Right on the box it says 4000 liters for the large filter and 100 liters for the carbon filter
Hey did you try out the Grayl water filter yet?
I just got one at goodwill and it's not moving water is there an on or off
Is that cap compatible with Klean Kanteen wide mouth ?
What's a "fiwder"?
i got on of theses off amazon but the filter i have hase12 cut outs on to sides so i don't know what to make of that .
If you put it in a suitcase to travel with, will it NOT spill at all?
Don't fill it if your not drinking after
how many ml can it hold? i heard 24foz but in metric!
Yeah this is funny you said your left hand is your clean hand and you said don't touch the top with your dirty hand then you are touching it with both hands and the drink out of it wow what great advice
260 gallons vs 100,000 gallons with the swayer mini...?

Is this safe just like the actual filter that is sold by itself?
yes

buy the life straw i
The thing I don't like about this kind of filter is that it is only good for producing drinking water and not water for cooking, etc.
This is for survival needed to answer 4 years later
Nice job. First I've seen about the amounts of suck needed to use it.
Thanks what part of PA? N W I assume.
South central pa!
Black Owl Outdoors Chambersburg right here
Why did you hold and tilt the bottle up while drinking?
hh155 hahahaha was about to say the same thing
He explained that @4:35
3:35 vidio cut ...........changed the water
Stream water is pretty safe without filtering
+JohnLarry Jerry Maybe in some parts of the world. But around here I wouldn't drink it without boiling or filtering.
+Black Owl Outdoors Ah

+antpop1 I don't know what the word is. This is not what I meant. But ok...
Can it handle salt water
I agree. Would definitely prefer metal container over plastic.

Will it filter tap water
Nope, nor will it work in most of NA since it will not filter chemicals from mining/agriculture.
Does it filter salt water and parasites
Lewis Cameron It does not filter salt water. That's a process called desalinization.
I thought it filters 1000 gallons
I bought this bottle a week ago and loved it however I left standard tap water in it and it tasted horrible, a really nasty plastic flavor almost chemical tasting so I'm considering returning it. Its meant for water you want to drink right after.
Thanks
+Lv2flair yeah I'm not sure if you can maybe take off the filter so you can just use it as a bottle but I do know that the filters overexposure in water will wear it down faster.
Wats the ph level though
depends on the water source.
Sawer mini
How do they get up that 99.99999999999% sounds like a scam.
