I’ve been ignoring my violin for 47 years. However, my son has asked my play at his wedding. So I’ve dusted off 47 years worth of rosin dust, restrung my violin, bought a new bow and have started practicing. Thank you for the handy tips and inspiration to get back in playing shape. It will take some time but the foundation is still there so I think I can do it :).
I’m an absolute beginner so the first part of your warm up practice is my practice ☺️ however, this video was really helpful ~ I’m taking things super slow; however, I think I am going to increase my daily practice time ~ I only had my first lesson 5 days ago but I’m loving it already 😍
I’m so glad to have found your channel. I’m a beginner ( 6 months) and this is so helpful. I’m a firm believer that scales help to develop your ear to the correct pitch :)
Hi, I am from Kenya. I started Violin classes on 11th October, 2022 with a local teacher, who is wonderful. I discovered you the other day. I intend to follow all your tutorials. I love your one minute a day philosophy to practice. Keep it up.
I’ve been playing violin for 9 years and have been neglecting my warm-up exercises for almost this entire time. These are excellent! I just went through them and it readily exposed my weaknesses and explains why I don’t sound the way I want to. Doing these daily going forward. Thanks!
Exercise 1 : practising G D A E scales Exercise 2 : practising equal distribution of the bow and bowing parallel to the bridge Exercise 3 : practising slurs Exercise 4 : practising string crossing and double stops
Finally! A straightforward, not overly complicated video for violin warmups, and WHY they are important! Thank you for the video! EDIT: Thank you thank you THANK YOU! The warmups here and the video on tension in the thumb causing shuddering in the bow (if anyone hasn't seen it, go watch it; it's really helpful) have made it so I can actually FIX some mistakes I have been making! I live in the middle of nowhere southwest USA, so I've been mostly self-taught for a few years, and I am definitely looking into the academy now! Especially since a lot of small mistakes (like thumb tension) aren't something I really notice without them being pointed out. So being able to notice that now is super helpful, I've been able to play a few pieces I've never been able to play before without the bow shuddering. (YAY!) And the scales exercise has helped me tremendously improve my intonation, because it's easier to hear when I'm off a note in a piece if I practice the scale beforehand. SOOO helpful! Thank you again!
I actually practice all the scales I know at the moment before each practice session (10 months in, so D, G, C, A, E, B and F major, 1 octave), and my teacher gave me an exercise sheet for slurred notes which started at 4 notes per bow, now I'm up to 16 which is difficult, but still pretty cool :D I know I should include more bowing exercises and string crossing exercises...
Placing a sticker in the middle of the bow is a great idea for playing slurs. I realized that I was playing unevenly so this will help. Also I was noticing your bow hold. It's very relaxed. It looks as though the bow is almost hangs from your hand. I've seen another violinist that plays that way. The bow hold has been a real challenge for me. A few days ago I woke up to my pinky throbbing then it did most of the day so I didn't use it. It's ok today and I have practiced today. The bow hold, string crossing, and intonation are areas I am working on. There is so much to be aware of as a beginner and it seems one has to make an effort to be aware of what one is doing constantly in all areas . I know it will get better and really it already has. Your encouragement is a help for sure. Love your sense of humor! The one about not playing the same thing all the time once you've mastered it was so funny. Day one, day two, one year later. Haven't belly laughed like that in a while.
Absolutely making this part of my warm-up (I had no warm-up 'til now). Thank you so much! You're a wonderful teacher and I am subscribing to your channel. How long should each of these be done? I've had my violin for a month and I can't wait to improve!
Hi Max, thank you for the kind words and for subscribing to our violin channel.🎻✨As for your question. 🤔 Maybe that would totally depend on you! Even as a not-so-beginner nowadays every now and then I still incorporate the basics when I can.
I started to play during covid lockdown & went well for 1st 18 months. Unfortunately everything went a bit pared shaped a year ago & I stopped. Have just picked up my violin again & my tutor is available again & I have started to practice my scales again. Thank-you for all the fabulous tips. They are really helpful.
I know this is an old video but having just started a few weeks ago myself I've been just doodling on the violin coming up with my own exercises. With previous experience learning the bagpipes I've had some good instruction on how to improve mistakes on my own. I'm so happy to see my own creations are being repeated in videos like this even if this video has a much more cohesive way to do it. :)
When it’s 4:40am and one parent is still asleep but your temped to play the violin that’s sitting in the room across from you that you got yesterday…. No, just me? Okay gimme and hour or two
I’m so grateful I found you on here! Our daughter is a new violinist in 6th grade and now we’re in coronavirus shutdown. We are still paying for our violin rental but her teacher wants them to practice but isn’t doing any online lessons!! 🙀🤦♀️ We want her to still keep up with her beginning practice, of course (and we don’t play) so I’ve been trying to find UA-cam videos she likes. She said your videos are great because she can actually play along with you and you are teaching her different things too so I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU sooooo much!!!🙏🙏 😘😘😘
You're very welcome and glad to hear that you are very supportive of your young violinist's journey ❤️ Wishing you and your family a lovely and safe time ahead during this crisis and happy practicing to your daughter! 🎻✨
I'd love to get my violin but: 1. It's 1am. 2. I don't have my violin yet because Amazon is late with the shipping/delivery. >:( Update: Guys I have my violin now. Oh happy days
I took two years violin lessons, then I retired and could not afford lessons anymore. But I truly rely on utube for help. But I am lousy time manager and am not consistent but you are helping me look forward to my practices. Thank you.
Yes Yes Yes...This is the kind of lessons I like best, the Play Along...Please make more play along videos, please! Us beginners (at least me) really benefit from playing along with someone else (you hehe)...maybe make a video of you doing the warm up and some scales and stuff repetitively, like a few minutes of bow practice (my nemesis right now hehe), and a few minutes of each scale, etc...you could just do it once and in edit loop it several times, or something :D Playing along with you also helps a lot with us beginners intonation :D Anyway, please more play along for beginners, this type of video seems very rare for violin, whereas for guitar it seems there are a lot more playing lessons (seems like most violin people are stingy with the lessons hehe)...gah, i digressed again....anyway, thanks for all your wonderful lessons and advice :D
Julia, you're a great teacher. when you add some humor to lighten up the practice it makes everything much more enjoyable. I'm pretty much a beginner and a lot of my practice time is scales, finger exercises, et cetera. By the way, whenever you say 'scales' I thought you were saying 'skills.' I admire you Dutchies for your command of english. (I'm in the U.S.) 'Scale' rhymes with 'mail.' What's funny is it's practically the same thing - playing scales is developing or sharpening skills. thank you for your incisive, informative and entertaining videos. I'm a subscriber and always can't wait for your next one.
This is my go to video to remind me what I am doing. First Eight days now completed ✅. I think being an old guy taking up a new instrument is actually helping because I want to learn. However, learning to read music at the same time is rather daunting.
