    I feel like this tunnel will be great for bringing Scandinavia closer to continental Europe! Especially considering the huge success that the Öresund Bridge between Copenhagen and Malmö has been - despite some initial scepticism, I don't think anyone in the region could imagine being without it now. All that's really missing when the Fehmarn Tunnel is completed is a tunnel between Elsinore and Helsingborg at the northern end of the Öresund Strait to cut the travel times between continental Europe and the Scandinavian Peninsula even more. I am very much looking forward to doing day trips from southern Sweden down to Hamburg in the future!

    • @JohnnieHougaardNielsen
      @JohnnieHougaardNielsen 4 роки тому +10

      Coast to cost from Gedser would be about 45 km. The needed freeway and railroad construction (on the Danish side) would also be a much larger project, adding a lot of noise in the region. The ferry company intends to keep the boats sailing, but let's see how the economy in that turns out.

      Indeed. Using it every year, making a direct transport line from Hamburg (and other merging parts of Europe) directly to Copenhagen, Malmö, etc would not just ease traffic and help the environment, it would also increase business potential because you no longer have to factor in +30% fuel expenses for the increased distance it would take to travel through mainland Denmark first (or the wait and travel time with boat which on average would be 1 hour ish).

    I worked for Rambøll, the engineering company that did the calculations for the tunnel. They worked at the same time as the bridge solution, it was back in 2008. Both proposals was argued but a bridge was never decided, only the connection was agreed with the Germans. The solution chosen was the tunnel. As you say, lower impact on environment, and the tunnel will never close due to bad weather. The only reason a tunnel could be made without islands for fresh air, is because the emissions from cars are so low now. So 15 years ago, the emissions was too high, and a lot of air refreshing systems had to be installed, and even a fresh air island in the middle of the tunnel.

      "So, are we still doing the bridge? Seems a bit redundant now."
      I also remember Danes talking about the 'bridge' and how its either nice, or a waste of money, or convenient - depending on who you talked to.
      Actually forgot about it until the video, I guess i just assumed it was canceled since it's been a decade and there's still no bridge.

      @SteelRodent The Danish government owns Femern A/S, they do not run it. The problem with public projects today is that they set completely unrealistic expectations in terms of cost while at the same time continually outsourcing in accordance with neoliberal ideology that makes an expansive economic policy almost impossible.
      As for the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel, the delays are primarily due to appeals from German environmental organisations and the more decentralized German federation that makes protracting the process much easier. The Danish unitary state doesn't really have the same problem so even if there is some local opposition to the project (on the Danish side), they don't have a lot of power to prevent it.

    Good information, well presented. Subscribed for more.
    In 2015 we took the train ferry from Rødby in Denmark to Puttgarden in Germany, on our way to Lübeck and Hamburg. It was quite an experience, everyone has to disembark from the train during the passage. Later on that trip we did the Channel Tunnel on our way to London. Maybe we will live long enough to do this new tunnel in ten years, although that old clock keeps ticking. That 2015 was our 50th anniversary trip, seven weeks across the Atlantic, northern Europe, and back across the Atlantic, both ways by ship. It is good that Germany and Denmark have forward thinking leadership on infrastructure. Would that we had such leadership here in USA, where, frankly, things are just crumbling left and right.

      Yes, the journey by train from Copenhagen via Rødby and Puttgarden to Hamburg was nice, especially on summer with the ferry. I am a frequent traveller between these cities, before Corona at least once a month. Now this service has been stopped (in the end of 2019), and the journey has been rescheduled via Jutland. It take now longer with fewer trains, and often with a change involved in Fredericia (Jutland). And I don't know if I will use the new connection ever as I don't think that I will live in Denmark anymore when it will be finished.
      But happy that you have enjoyed your trip!

    Well, the ferry ride itself is 45 minutes. But every single time I've been waiting for the ferry to arrive another hour passes just waiting in line to drive onto the ferry. So the entire crossing plus the usual waiting time is often up to 2 hours in total. 10 minute drive in a tunnel to get to Germany from Denmark or a 2 hour wait+crossing? A vast difference. As for the ferries. They will still remain for all those who want a cheaper option and to rest and take a break on a ship. The ferries didn't disappear when the channel tunnel was opened between Britain and France. Sure they won't need as many ferries as they need today but there's bound to be travelers who can spare the time and take a break.

    It would be more realistic to build a "Channel Tunnel" between Sweden and Germany, rather than Denmark and Germany. It is possible to bore a tunnel under the bottom of the Baltic Sea, between Trelleborg and Rügen. It would give a more straight route for trains between Stockholm and Berlin.

  • @richardsivertsen7047

    • @blavand7105
      @blavand7105 3 роки тому

      Wasn't the only reason tbh. There were several setbacks, due to Germany originally being more involved in the beginning, but lost public interest in the project and backing out. Forcing the Danish government to find the funds themselves. Several environmental surveys needed to be done, after there were claims of tampering and low quality work with the first reports. Environmental groups also made claims, that had to be studied too. All small things adding up to huge delays.

    My only experience of the ferry ride is when I was travelling across Europe a few years ago. I hadn't had much sleep for days and when the coach boarded the ferry I found a comfortable place to grab 40 winks. 20 minutes later I was woken up by the cleaner telling me I had to get off! The ferry lands and there is less than 10 minutes before it is turned around.
    Channel ferry operators were concerned that the tunnel would take all their business, but - up until Covid - they were as busy as ever. This tunnel will cost 2-3 times its estimate, and need to repay the cost. So the ferry will keep going, giving a much lower fare, costing a few minutes more time.
