I had 2 run-ins with bedbugs separated by nearly 15 years. I was a renter for a long time and the close proximity to neighbors who traveled internationally was the primary cause. On one occasion an adjoining unit tested positive for bed bugs and they wanted to heat-treat all units that shared a wall, to the side, above, and below, to be heat treated at the same time as the affected unit. I hope they are not using heat anymore. They give you a list of things to remove from your home, but the extreme high heat does damage to any synthetic material. I saw winter jackets bubble and soft plastics crumble.
The second incident happened when I picked up a single bed bug from a communal laundry facility. Just one. It was like going battle with the xenomorph in Alien. There would be single patches, often in a trail, along my limbs. I had lavender oil on hand, so I doused my bedding and my body with it. I saw the tell-tale trail on an arm one morning, lighter and more spread out, as if the bug could not stay in one spot on my body for very long. Then I saw it out in the open. Down the toilet it went and never had a problem since. Essential oils did work on this particular case, but for the typical run-in with these resilient bugs, people should contact the professionals and research the options. I hope the professionals are incorporating essential oils in their treatments.

It's crazy how close living quarters can make it easier for bedbugs to spread, especially when neighbors travel internationally. The heat treatment method you mentioned work for sure, but the damage to synthetic materials is definitely a downside.
Your second encounter, battling a lone bedbug from a communal laundry facility, sounds like something out of a horror movie. Kudos to you for finding a solution with lavender oil - that's a unique approach. I'll keep that in mind.
