Rick James having a picture of himself wearing one carved on his gravestone is all the proof you need.

Doesn't mean he actually played it. Oscar Alston played on all the recordings and he used a Stingray.

@@vincentmorelli1013the isolated bass track for Super Freak is on UA-cam - definitely not a Stingray. Likely a Precision bass, MAYBE the bridge pickup of a Ric.

Rick James pretended to play bass, and would add color notes live. He played many instruments as a Jack of all trades and was able to compose his music with starter directives as a prompt for the individual players. Watch him live. On Love Gun (which is more a video on UA-cam) he is basically using the bass as a prop.
Maybe he got erections while performing and needed to hold something over his groin.

people love to say how "gimmicky" basses like the ric or the thunderbird don't have a good tonal range, but you just have to work with your instrument to get the sound you want form it. And not everything and everyone needs to sound like a jazz bass, it' fun exploring the sounds of beautiful instruments like these.

Completely agree. Love a good p or jazz bass, but i’ll live and die by the Ricky

Ricks are associated with that grungy treble sound of Chris Squire and Geddy Lee, but now that I own one, I can say with certainty that it’s just as versatile as any other behs when it comes to tone.

I have a 74’ 4001 that looks exactly like that one. It was my go to for many years. Then I discovered a German made Warwick corvette. Never really looked back after that.

A really nice 70's funk tone of the Rickenbacker is actually the neck pickup with the mute on, tone halfway down. Often sits in the mix much better than a P for a tubby vintage tone because of its mid scoop. That neck PU is underrated.

Hey Danny. I don't play but I love those old 70s Rickenbackers. My favorite bass player Steve Priest used one. Love your accent. Are you by chance from Yorkshire? Cheers from the US!🍺

In your short in which you play a Beatles bass line the sound is close to the bass sound on Murmur from R.E.M.
I'd like to see you play one of the riffs from that album since I'm sure you could get close to the sound

Tried out a 1980 4001 recently. Was amazed by the amount of punch from very light touch on the strings. Kind of expected it to feel like a Music Man. Nope

They look so cool. They sound so cool. They're so uncomfortable to play (esp. the ones with binding.) To me it would be worth the pain (if I could afford one.)

Honestly, I hate my 4001 for anything genuinely funky. I almost sold it before discovering that they sound best when you either hammer them with a pick or a super light touch for fingers - a la McCartney
To me they're easily one of the best basses to slap with, but I pretty much loathe slap bass.

@@Panufo I slapped a P bass, and it was great, too. But my 4001 had a peculiar knock to it kinda like it was semi-hollow. That gave it a drum-like quality when I slapped on it. Sounded so good.
