Final Fantasy 2 Pixel Remaster - Complete Playthrough | Full Story + Best Scenes

Final Fantasy II Pixel Remaster has a deep and darker story than most FF games. There is no level system, instead you increase stats depending on how you play the game. The game gives you enough freedom regarding character customization as they can put on all equipment, and use all magic. Though I recommend going for a magic set up since FF 2 has tons of spells. This Remaster version is probably the best version for newcomers.
I recommend you set the boost for 4x magic experience, that way you don't have to grind in order to obtain high levels for your magic abilities. If you exploit the use of different magic throughout the game, it can actually be tons of fun.
