    What Holden is going through right now could be described as compassion fatigue, in other words emotional burnout from caring too much for others. It's a real thing that happens to psychologists, social workers, aid workers, helping professionals, etc.

    You know what i love about The Expanse? They're not afraid of nuking a planet and actually following through with the consequences of the stakes being raised. Most shows would play up the drama of "oh no, their gonna launch a nuke and we have to stop them" then the heroes come in and save the day and the stakes just dont feel real. The Expanse changes that, its an ever evolving world and you feel like your watching history unfold. That is what makes it so compelling.

    Nikki, when you were talking about the tools flying around, you were debating about why the tools were flying around, and how fast. The tools were flying in weird and unpredictable directions because it's the ship that's moving, the tools are staying in the same place. So depending on how hard, and which direction, the ship turned, that's what direction and how fast the tools appeared to fly across the room.

    • @SingWhileYouMay
      @SingWhileYouMay 4 роки тому +18

      Ricocheting off walls and furniture gave them their own movement though, added to the vector caused by the maneuvering ship. That's where the real unpredictability came from.

      @robertjstepp 4 роки тому +6

      @@SingWhileYouMay exactly. The weightless environment lets the tools keep traveling in the last direction they were pushed, along with the movement of the ship. Also, don't know how much micro-gravity is being produced by this small ship. Unpredictable is true

    Sorrento-Gillis' first instinct was the right one.
    Mao isn't an evil man, but, like Sorrento-Gillis, he has no willpower. He can be swayed SO easily, and the only people advising him are creepazoids like Dresden and Strickland. Important lesson for people who get worried about main characters being in danger or getting injured: When main characters get killed, it's always preceded by a big buildup and it will be a big scene. You'll never have a main character die off screen to be found later by the other main characters.
    Shad and Julie Mao had sudden deaths, but they were not really main characters.

It's every episode but that was about the time I was like, "Wow every episode flies by and so much happens", and yet...four seasons in, there are no plot holes, no unresolved storylines, no "side quests", no filler. I think the only example of exposition is the episode with the Epstein Drive backstory and it was so good that you don't mind it. I can't say enough good things about The Expanse.

    Holden had spent a month at the Diamond Head Electronic Warfare Lab on Oahu as his first posting after officer candidate school. During that time, he’d learned he had no desire to be a naval intelligence wonk, really disliked poi, and really liked Polynesian women. He’d been far too busy at the time to actively chase one, but he’d thoroughly enjoyed spending his few spare moments down at the beach looking at them. He’d had a thing for curvy women with long black hair ever since.
    The Martian Marine was like one of those cute little beach bunnies that someone had used editing software on and blown up to 150 percent normal size. The proportions, the black hair, the dark eyes, everything was the same.
    Only, giant.
    It short-circuited his neural wiring. The lizard living at the back of his brain kept jumping back and forth between Mate with it! and Flee from it!
    What was worse, she knew it. She seemed to have sized him up and decided he was only worth a tired smirk within moments of their meeting.
    “Do you need me to go over it again?” she said, the smirk mocking him.

      “Do you need me to go over it again?” she said, the smirk mocking him. They were sitting together in the galley, where she’d been describing for him the Martian intelligence on the best way to engage the Munroe-class light destroyer.
      No! he wanted to yell. I heard you. I’m not a freak. I have a lovely girlfriend that I’m totally committed to, so stop treating me like some kind of bumbling teenage boy who’s trying to look down your dress!
      But then he’d look up at her again, and his hindbrain would start bouncing back and forth between attraction and fear, and his language centers would start misfiring. Again.
      “No,” he said, staring at the neatly organized list of bullet points she’d forwarded to his hand terminal. “I think this information is very … informative.”
      He saw the smirk widen out of the corner of his eye and focused more intently on the list.
      “Okay,” Bobbie said. “I’m going to go catch some rack time. With your permission, of course. Captain.”
      “Permission granted,” Holden said. “Of course. Go. Rack.”
      She pushed herself to her feet without touching the arms of the chair. She’d grown up in Martian gravity. She had to mass a hundred kilos at one g, easy. She was showing off. He pretended to ignore it, and she left the galley.
      “She’s something, isn’t she?” Avasarala said, coming into the galley and collapsing into the recently vacated chair. Holden looked up at her and saw a different kind of smirk. One that said the old lady saw right through him to the warring lizards at the back of his head. But she wasn’t a giant Polynesian woman, so he could vent his frustration on her.
      “Yeah, she’s a peach,” he said. “But we’re still going to die.”

    Anyone with a driving license knows how to drive a car. But it will be different than driving a race car. At the same time there is someone chasing you and shooting at you. You need experience, skill and control. In season 1 episode 8 *Salvage* , when the Roci crews found Anubis hidden inside the crevasse, even Alex praised the skill whoever 'park' the ship. Even in real life, there are so many people can't park their cars right in a parking lot, let alone park a ship like Julie did.

    The 82% effectiveness that was proposed for immediately firing on the weapon-platforms works out to 4 of the 5 platforms being destroyed and one of them being able to fire back. So Earth still had 82% effectiveness, even with the one rail-gun platform misfiring. That is what nobody thinks to tell either the Secretary-General or Reverand Vodolova, though you can bet that Errenwright is aware of that.

    • @sgbench

    • @nottopcat5956

      I don’t think that’s how the probability works. It was 82% for complete success. If it was 82% per platform, the odds of complete success would have been 37%.

    People have double standard. When Chrisjen Avasarala in 2x06 says she will go after Mao's family and his kids and pressure them, haunting them for the rest of their days and nail them on the wall everybody says "Yasss Qwinnnnn". When Erinwright says it now a lot of people have a problem with it. They are more similar then you think both just playing a political game.

    • @Yora21
      @Yora21 4 роки тому +3

      What she said was that Mao's adult children would not get anything when the family business gets confiscated and they would be banned from holding any positions of power. And will be investigated for their participation in the conspiracy.
      Unless Mao agrees to a deal, then they still can be millionaires living in fancy mansions.
      Though that was not actually addressed to Mao but to Erinwright.

    About last episode, there was gravity but every time Alex made a turn gravity would go in another direction.

    • @sgbench

      Replace "gravity" with "momentum" and you're spot on

    • @Yora21
      @Yora21 4 роки тому +1

      "An object in motion stays in motion, unless acted upon by another force."
      When the Rocinante makes a hard turn, everything that isn't secured keeps flying in the old direction with the old speed. Technically it's not the tools that are flying around. The tools fly straight, but the Rocinante is jerking around.

    • @tecjohnson
      @tecjohnson 4 роки тому

      Well yeah. If you want to be technically correct (which is the best kind of correct.) And if I had said it felt like it would go in another direction would have been more accurate.
      There is actually no gravity on the ship ever, it is all an illusion created by inertia. But if you were on the ship, inertia and gravity would be the same thing. Even the crew use the terms interchangeably. ("How fast are we going?" "We are travelling at half G, hoss") To anybody inside the ship it would feel like gravity was shifting everywhere.
      But what I was replying too was Steven saying Amos was doing his "parkour" in no gravity. It wasn't that Amos was weightless. When the ship was doing it's maneuvers Amos wasn't doing a hand stand on the railing, he was holding onto it so he didn't "fall" into the ceiling.
      It was only I had a few seconds to write the last post because the kids were trying to get at my phone to play pokemon go.
