I got deluged by videos on this topic last month. I’m glad this one appeared tonight. I see a consistent theme is criticism of the £340 million price tag. I think it’s a bargain for what Belfast is getting. It should encourage funding for capital investment in the region.
Wonderful. For so many years we have been pitied or sneered at and now we have a state-of-the-art transport hub that we can be delighted with. Finally, the modern world has arrived in Belfast. I'm so proud of my home city
As a Dubliner this is so wonderful to see - so happy and proud of Belfast for making this happen. I hope it encourages our gov down here to improve our rubbish rail infrastructure!
Dublin's rail infrastructure is superior to that of Belfast. For example, unlike Dublin, Belfast has no electrified suburban railways at all and no tram network!! Heuston was hugely and beautifully enlarged in the last few decades both in terms of platform capacity (now 8 for rail and 3 for tram) and concourse size. Only now does Belfast have major station facilities for rail passengers that Dublin had twenty years ago or more. To me it's a joy to see Belfast raising its standards in regard to rail transport with the new station. I hope this trend continues.
@@odunadhaigh Connolly and Heuston are absolutely woeful, dirty and poorly kept with extremely limited food/retail facilities compared to train stations in any other major world city. Describing the poxy uncovered, drug addict gathering site of a Luas stop as platforms comparable with proper stations is extremely generous or deluded too.

Well wear and long may GC prosper. We got a new 20-bay bus station integrated into Colbert rail station early this year and it is probably the best interchange facility in RoI at present but fair play to Translink for being innovative as a former Four Winds resident, I am delighted for Belfast!

Translink really need to sort out a proper transport link to the "International" airport. Unless you're driving, try getting home from the airport if your flight lands after 11pm . For a country trying hard to be a tourist destination this is a shocking state of affairs.
So is the only way on foot from city centre into it via Glengall Street where you walked up first or can you still cut through the old gt Vic mall? Ps loved the video it's the first I've seen that properly showcases how good it's going to be
I think the plan is to keep that mall and be able to walk on through to the bus and train stations opening up a huge new Quarter area for not only travellers but the city centre.
No trains all summer on Portadown line. The bus substitute takes twice as long. Its been a real pain. Now translink are saying Christmas before trains are running from here. Must be some way to run trains to another Belfast station till this is open? Really inconvenient translink
Translink have never cared about passengers. Anytime things go wrong it's always someone else's fault. Joke of a company. Wouldn't trust them to run a bath nevermind a travel network.
Translink get a lot of stick (including from myself when I was a commuter in a past life), but fair to play to them on this; it's about time Belfast had a decent station. Shame the Glider stops nowhere near it though. And I would've thought that roof exterior would have been a prime candidate for solar panels?
Great video. I haven't been to Belfast since 1999 and I now live on the other side of the world, but it's good to know if I ever get back there will be a great train station in the city centre.
This is impressive, a lot of construction projects have delivered far less for much more in terms of cost. It is good to see that it has been designed and delivered with future proofing as a consideration, which will be of benefit, if (or when) the level of rail traffic increases with future expansion plans...hopefully this will encourage more people to travel by rail, which is far more sustainable than many other forms of transport, delivering a new link to the airport from the city should be an absolute no brainer.
Very happy to see this. Rail on the island should be a priority of both North and South. Am I mistaken or are all the tracks in the station stub lines? No pass-through? (just a comment as most new stations I see have both. though not always)
Exactly! Old station was always rammed, you have space to breathe in this one. usually people want light and space for public spaces and this has both in surplus
As a Sydneysider of Belfast parentage, and having lived in Belfast this is amazing to see. I am so impressed. Here in Sydney the new Metro has just opened and it’s ****ing amazing. So thrilled to see Belfast getting some great new infrastructure too
Am I the only one that thinks that surely Belfast can come up with a better local name than Grand Central - it’s like ‘let’s nick New York City’s name to make us look big’ .
@@xr6lad Grand Central was a name long before New York, it was always a generic name for the largest stations in Victorian times especially. There is also a historical link to the city as the owner of the original Grand Central Hotel on Royal Avenue wanted to originally create the Grand Central Station in the same spot in the 1800s so there's a historical link there
Looks like an airport terminal without the planes! Sandy Row locals should be very grateful of the investment put in right on their door step. But, no, just like the way they , also, refused to have the NIHE rebuild The Village they want to keep the status quo. Wonder why? They are blinded by their hate.
This is one station where dublin has many railway stations like heuston station connolly station pearse street station tara street station serving in dublin a lot more choice with commuter rail and dart and luas services
It's also twice the size. We have a few stations including this, Botanic, Yorkgate (newly redeveloped), Lanyon Place (newly redeveloped) so I think we're ok for now. This is also the biggest on the island now too which is great for the city

One hundred and forty million pounds over budget and they have forgotten to lay tracks for the trains. Incredible, where else could this be true only in Northern Ireland...
They didn't forget, there was a transition period between the old and new stations as they had to wait for the old one to be closed to begin work on that section of track. Then after completion it was held up by bureaucracy in the safety checks. I agree about budget, well over and far too much

Absolutely amazing piece of infrastructure, people from NI complain alot but this is absolutely amazing for Belfast... Hopefully itll enable new routes to be constructed in the future 😉

It is not miles ahead of Dublin. Dublin Heuston was beautifully enlarged within the last several decades from 5 rail platforms to 8, and acquired a magnificent enlarged concourse. Dublin Heuston is a beautiful station. It's only now that Belfast is acquiring something approximating to Dublin in regard to major rail stations, and yet still Belfast has no electrified suburban rail services.

People can't CURRENTLY get home after 11pm, you need to see this hub as a starting point for future changes. Think positively, only place in the world who would see a brand spanking new transport hub as a negative haha. See it as future proofing for expansion and change
I think you underestimate how complex relocating railway lines is. Opening in mid October hopefully. However, it's not a railway station, it's a transport hub serving buses and rail
Worst bus service in uk ,think money could have been used for more important things, and by the time they get trains running be end of October. Whole thing is running millions over budget, so think their not very proud of that .
Ridiculous waste of money. Alot of the bus services that went from Europa arent even going to the new station. Theyve been shifted to the dump that's Laganside station. Don't see the point in splashing over a 3rd of a billion quid on a new station whenever the buses will be stuck in traffic thanks to Belfast's wonderful road infrastructure. Would have been better spending money inproving that instead of this white elephant.
Exactly lad. The Westlink was touted to be revamped in the late 90s, and 20+yrs later its still a fuckin shambles. Belfast portrays itself as a modern metropolitan city with all the amenities of the big cities in Europe etc, yet the road infrastructure and the public transport is diabolical.
Heuston Station was hugely enlarged within the last few decades, and now has 8 railway platforms and 3 tram platforms. It has greatly enlarged concourse with high quality food and retails offerings. In recent years, it has always been a pleasure to me to wait for a train there. At long last rail passengers in Belfast are being given something approaching the magnificence and comfort of Heuston; it was a long time coming but better late than never.
Heuston is a beautiful train station almost almost 180 years old it also has trams but its great to see Belfast getting a large brand new transport hub the more trains on the island the better hope to visit when i can travel to it by train

You are right about Heuston being a good station, only defect being the long walk from the concourse to platforms 6,7&8. With an overall roof, it is a proper terminus.

Most flights arriving after midnight are charter flights or flights FROM tourist destinations anyway...

I'm sorry it's really not, I've gotten on buses across the UK and Ireland and we have some of the cheapest fares and nicest vehicles

You are right about Heuston being a good station, only defect being the long walk from the concourse to platforms 6,7&8.
With an overall roof, it is a proper terminus.
