FILM PHOTOGRAPHY - HALINA 35X CAMERA - JUNK FIND

- Trying out the Halina 35X Film Camera around my village.
My friend "Gaz" found a box of junk at a bootfair and bought it for me thinking it was all darkroom lamps. It was all junk apart from this Halina 35X that was in the box.
It was in a sorry state but after a lube and a clean I
set about trying to use it.
As with most of my videos I end up in the darkroom and was presently surprised at the sharpness of the lens and quality print the camera produced.
This video is me trying out this camera for the first time.
About my videos
If my videos inspire, create ideas and help others in film photography and darkroom work then it's worth making them.
I always welcome comments that are useful towards the video subject that will help others understand the process within.
Keep shooting and thanks for watching.

I have had an halina bought for me by my father in 1960 its a cracking camera although some people look down their nose and run it down happily they know nothing thanks for you take and video really enjoyed watching
A lot of gear heads out there Stephen. Cheers
First camera I ever bought new in 1960 when I left school, whats more I still have it, and it certainly worked last time I used it, they are capable of taking nice photos as you showed
it always impresses me what people find!
thanks for sharing this with us.
i should go out hunting for gear more often
Super video as usual!
What a beautiful idea! I really like the photo it the electric lines!
The city seems a dream!
That's our small village.
Picked up a Halina Paulette Electric for a fiver, mint condition including the original case, notorious for leaking light apparently, thanks for your upload nice pics 👍
Very nice!
Even old cameras need a bit of loving. Hope you have lots of fun with this vintage gem. Cheers!
skool brother I have a original fujica 35 - ML it had sticky shutter dials too and some fungus on the rear element and the shutter curtains froze up a little graphite dust she was working again all good I got my lens spanner out and gave her some tlc works like magic again cheers for sharing your vintage gear
Your village looks nice...also looked at it on net with pics of old level crossing gates nice....
Yeh that camera always thought of as cheap..... But I like the idea of just a bit of fun must admit.... Thanks for sharing bud.....
Thanks 👍 It's nice but no Pub
I enjoyed this video! Seeing a different scenery was very delighting! Now to look at your DIY light box👍
ha ha, Thanks. It's a good lightbox!
Great video. I enjoyed seeing the village. I have been to Stratford so I know the area fairly well. Your video brought back some wonderful memories. The camera is a wonderful little gem. There is nothing I like more than taking an old camera and making a print from it. Can you imagine the years it sat unused and probably would have for a long time and Gaz not rescued it. I also like to think to the original owners. Buying a camera back then was a massive investment and they must have looked at catalogs, gone to stores to look at different options and slowly save up some money to buy it. I hope it brought them the same joy it is bringing you now.
That's well put Patrick. I never actually thought that way about the camera and you're right. Somewhere back in time that camera was chosen and loved. It's got a story. Wouldn't you love to see the photos it took! And how it ended up in a pile of junk.... Still works!
Great video! I have a Halina 35X myself which I bought on a hunt for all cameras that were either designed or built in Hong Kong. Sunny 16 and scale focussing is a very enjoyable way to shoot!
Michael Epstein Agreed. I enjoy shooting the sunny 16. No metering to worry about. Just experience. The focusing is tricky but longer distance at infinity seems to be a safe choice. Or feet measuring. I also shoot the Zeiss Ikon Nettar. Same rules. 🙂
Your much better than I am in the developing/darkroom work I have never enjoyed that side of photography but I keep trying ,anyway a subscribe and and big like from me and look forward to catching up on your excellently made videos.......Beeching murdered a railway near me too.!!
Harry Stevens Thanks Harry ☺️
What a beauty: camera, photos and video!
Nice Video! You even broke out the drone in this one. I like the different shots.
I have one of these cameras in my collection. in fact I have owned it since new. I bought it in 1966 when i was about 16 and it was my first real camera in that it has aperture and shutter speeds as opposed to little pictures of cloud and sun. I think it was a sort of Leica replica rather than a copy and I'm almost tempted to put some film in it.
I haven't used it since but it's interesting to see it works.
Great video and I love all those old cameras ( I have lots of them ) but we should take Azriel Knights advice and tape up the edges if we are in doubt about light leaks.
It's a good trick to use as I did on my canon EF video.

I use black electrical tape for this purpose, and it works most of the time.@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss
Thanks ! Nice video
we have those same sorts of sales here in Australia, we just call them car boot sales. can be the source of many little treasures if you get lucky. my partner got for me at camera fair a mint condition little Zeiss Ikon Contina. I have a roll of film in it and will be shooting it when I get a chance. love using old film cameras.
We call them car boot sales as well- here in the UK
Love your videos mate, keep them up! Greetings from Colwyn Bay, N Wales!
Thanks Nathan!
that's a nice camera! and the sunny 16 rule is still a struggle for me!
I usually get good results using the sunny 16 rule Rob. If my camera hasn't got a meter inside, or its unreliable and I want to enjoy a walk with a camera and take a photo without all the fuss of metering up I just go for sunny 16. Set my shutter speed to same as my film speed and normally use f16 sun, f8 light overcast, 5.6 dull overcast. And keep out of the shadows!
It looks a great little camera, and now I know where you live I'll be sending some of mine down for you to clean! As always a great video that I really enjoyed, but what was the young lass with the Canon photographing?
Ha ha, thanks Mark. I'll keep my eye open in the post. She was waiting for birds. She had a long 400mm canon push and pull lens. Thought it looked funny going next to her with the Halina!
Halina made really good cameras, until they sold the name on. Not surprised that it works fine and the lens is pretty sharp; however photo's of an electricity pole on the house wall. I think you may have to sneak that one in ;-)
Box of junk? At 1:16 there's a Hadrill & Horstmann counterbalance lamp (or at least parts of one) in that box - very rare (bottom-left, and not the one at the top). I hope you didn't throw it out!
Nice little camera
Michel Oliveira 1959!
Yeah man, this is amazing. Back in the day cameras were really built like tanks :)
keep up the great work
Hi, just found your channel and loving how simply you break things down. I'm VERY new to this and picked up a HALINA 35X 35MM FILM Camera. What black and white film would you recommend I pick up and can a buy other lenses for this camera. Thanks.
Thanks. Glad you found the channel. I can take my lens off by unscrewing it for a clean but I'm not sure if there are other lenses. I don't think so. The film is entirely up to you for whatever you're shooting. I'd say a good all-round film would be a 400 speed either Ilford HP5 or Kodak Tri-x. Great little camera though. Have fun!
Very cool! Good eye (and that’s not an Australian greeting).
How’s the Xtol treating you?
Good eye Nick! Yeah I like it so far. Have had good sharp results and no problems. Need to try other films like the Kodak Tri+X
I’ve got that camera, though mine has a great habit of jamming.they are good for double exposures
I've never tried double exposures.
Crackin little cameras and heavy for their size too :-) I have 2....... well.... 1 and another that needs fixing :-)
My shutter button is a bit sticky which wobbled a shot for me today. I nearly dumped it too! But. Decided to clean it up and it is very sharp! I'll keep it as a fun camera to take out now and again.
And its a good tool to sort out anyone who might want to mug you too!! :-D
Iain Hamilton-Cummings Ha Ha. Followed by my tripod
Shoot Film Like a Boss Save your tripod! I think the camera will be enough to null their intentions!! 😂
Iain Hamilton-Cummings 😂
Weird question but how do you know when you have something in focus like some things to keep in mind when shooting? And what is everything for on the lens? I have a halina rolls no. 923 but I can't find a guide anywhere
You don't know if it's in focus. You have to measure the distance using the range finder inside the view finder and dial the distance in on the focus ring. The other numbers are aperture and shutter speeds. Hope this helps.
Great video just picked one of these up myself of £8 in great nick, only shutter seems sticky at slower speeds, any idea how i get the lens off heard you say you took yours off and gave the shutter some lubrication any help would be greatly received, thanks
redone2612 Nice one. Just keep twisting it anti clockwise.
Hiya was wondering how you load these with film
Oh.. I forgot to say that if my country doesn't win this world cup (most likely it won't lol) I hope England bring the Cup home!
Which Country are you Michel?
Brazil, my friend!
Should be okay. Costa Rica tomrrow !
omg, please tell me you didn't pay for a Halina... Those are probably one of the absolute worst cameras... ever! I had a 35x.. While I was trying it for the first time the focus stop pin broke, the lens unscrewed from the camera and fell off.
I put it back together, gave it to my friend .... She still has it but won't try it because IT'S RUBBISH! LOL! We are contemplating tossing it into a pond LOL
Also, I've had the back fall off while shooting it. Literally fall off because the lock is so loose. Such garbage! Honestly, I wish I tossed it into a lake. A very deep, cold and impossible to get to the camera type of lake... Then nobody will ever have the "joy" of a garbage camera like the Halina... LOL
