I. Have a green Werra 1 . I sold them in the 60s £22 then ,took mine to Pitlochry in July 2022 this summer used a colour neg 200asa which was 20 years old (from my film stock in the freezer) produced crisp sharp results the tesser 4 element lens was renowned for this .I have a rangefinder which slips on a shoe and a bright line finder a very clever design with a lens hood and lens cap made in East Germany as Carl Ziess split after the war .They produced many variations even interchangeable lens.
When I asked, when there is going to be video about this beautiful camera, I won't imagine even in my wildest dreams, that it's gonna be out the very next day :D
It was the reminder I needed. I have been meaning to feature it for a while. Thanks!
Werra is also a name of a river in Germany.
I have a Werra and love it. Very sharp pictures.
As a german - I smiled :D
The filter is removable with a bit of care. Filter thread is 30.5mm. I managed to get some on Ebay. However SRB still make them in I believe yellow, orange and red for B&W photography.. Good video, good camera.
So well done! Thank you.
Thank you too!
Lovely plane. Love those old rotary engines. Cameras and planes. Two of my favourite things together
Welcome to the Werra club :-)
Fun little camera Don!
Black arrow rocket in the background 💋
Radial engines are really cool.
Lovely results. Just goes to show some of these old film cameras can still cut it.
They do Richard
Some lovely shots there. Saw this camera myself on eBay and just had to get it. Such beautiful styling.
Lovely high contrast shots from this camera and film. Enjoyable. Thank you!
WOOOOOOWWW Phil Thanks¡¡¡¡
You're welcome. Just another day in paradise for me.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Yesssss Thanks Phil¡¡¡¡
This is my second, same/ similar comment on your channel .... "I have this camera" ;)
The Werra camera range is excellent and have a lot of history behind them. Some have a viewfinder and meter, others totally automatic and some have a range finder and interchangeable lenses. Got a rangefinder Werra with the 50mm f2.8 Tessa and the 35mm f2.8 Flektogon. When you get use to the strange film advance mechanism they are great.
I joined the channel. I got the cool badge, man now I feel like I am somebody!
Great badge.! Thanks for the support.
I thought it only fair, I have learned a lot from your channel. would like to see you shoot with a TLR medium format though .
The Werra came originally with a cap that covered the whole lens, and could convert to a lens hood, which made it even more minimalistic.
Loved the first print you dodged the sky into, as a thank you. The hanger in the background really worked, and balanced the composition.
Fun project, so maybe the guy will offer to give you a flight, with the camera?
Love to but probably be nervous 😬
Fantastic shots and compositions. Great video as always.
Thanks James
Excellent and entertaining, as usual 👍. To disappoint you: You're nowhere near butchering the pronunciation.
Very interesting camera shutter !!! Plus film rewind! And as always - your amazing photos !!!
Thank you!
Many thanks!
The Tessar is a very nice Lens! With beautyfull Colour rendition! The Name of the Camera-Manufacturer wasn't too much butchered, not to bad ;-) With best regards from Germany!
Nice video. Perfect composition with the motor & cables...
Your pronunciation of Werra at 1:03 is perfect.
Cheers! Nice pictures and amazing prints. I have a Werra III and Loved its minimalistic style.
Thanks Aalexandre. So yours has the light meter and rangey? Does it all work?
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Yes, working nicely, some pics in mi IG @alexpontes1361. See you there!
Great shots from a very capable little camera. 😎
Excellent pictures from the Werra! 😊👍🏻
Nice episode :)
I've got one, a Werra 1, that I got in a bundle and have never used it ... but now I will! I was going to turn it into a trophy for my camera club. :-)
Awesome David. If anything this video has saved two Werra cameras. Yours and another person.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I'd never heard of them before, even though I lived in Berlin for 10 years. :-)
Love it the film advance is stunning. Cracking shots and prints the film looks well too love the contrast. 📷
Cheers Paul.
Loved the video. Glad you enjoyed the camera. My other one has a light leak which I haven’t sussed yet!
Thanks Neil. Try the black tape elimination. I did notice I had a slight leak on a few frames mid roll on the sprocket holes. I'll see how it goes. It won't bother me unless it creeps onto the image. Thanks again Neil.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Black tape elimination?
@@257squadron yes. I cover all parts with black electrical tape and shoot. If the leaks stop one of those areas covered are to blame.
Ive got the slightly newer one with the light meter, the original lens hood kinda covers the whole lens barrel up. Mine has the green leatherette so it looks like an avocado stuck onto the front of it lol
I see those online when I was researching. At first I thought they were jazzed up by someone but they actually came like that.
I always watch to the end. Great prints.
Thanks Phillip!
Wera is an excellent camera, with really good lens. Still Looking for Werra model with cold shoe.
Just brilliant prints!
Thanks!
such great photos
Cheers Ribs.
Your usual entertaining style... with some great prints.... as for butchering a name why not, mine is always butchered..Malcom... does my head in lol
At least they can't spell your name with a D... (RODGER) LOL
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss 😂😂
Great shots and cool plane.
Thanks Jamie
Brilliant Roger👍 great images I especially like the fuel pump shot👍
Yes I liked that one too.
Great pictures. Interesting film stock too.
Many thanks Lloyd!
Awesome shots! I have learned more about composition from your videos than I did in college!! LOL
That's awesome!
I'm going to be pedantic and mention that zone focus isn't to get things in focus but to achieve "acceptable sharpness" for a 10x8 print viewed at some defined distance.
Great!!!
Great video thanks! The Werra film advance is fascinating, and probably gentler (more linear motion) than some older lever advances that can shred sprocket holes, e.g. FED3. Nice work in the darkroom too.
Great shots, particularly of that old plane, good composition, great contrast and really nice results in the darkroom ! Really nice work ! Thanks for sharing :)
Thanks a lot!
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss P.S : I should add that your channel is quite unique, for a few reasons :
1) You're one of the rare film shooters who actually prints in the darkroom and shows us the results, and the process. Most of the others only scan and edit, sometimes heavily.
2) I never felt like you were shooting film because of a trend, or to attract more people to your channel, and I appreciate that.
3) You share your thoughts, you try new things just for the fun of it.
4) From what I can see from your videos, you seem approachable and humble, and that's rare too.
5) As a French fan of the English language, I must say that I love your accent :)
All of that makes me want to watch every new video of yours, even though I'm not always attracted to the subjects you choose in photography (I'm more of a portrait kind of guy). So thanks again for sharing, and keep up the good work !
@@simseeye6725 Thanks for the kind words Sims!
If Im not mistaken, Tessar is a 4 element lens. There are people with more knowledge who can say more :) love these old cameras. Gets you close to photography
I’ve been interested in a Werra for a while but reading up it seemed a pain to use but you’ve proved it isn’t- thanks. Now I’ve just got one on eBay 😱
ha ha. I found it a doddle to use. Fun too!
Nice photos.
Thanks!
Zeiss Ikon Tessar lenses, I just love 'em. They're sharp enough but not too sharp, and immediately take you to another time in the way they render an image. Unfortunately I'm now going to have to buy a Werra to add to my obsession, thanks Roger. I have the same feeling about Voigtlander's Colour Skopar lenes.
I'll be on the island next week toting a couple of Voigtlanders, a Super Ikonta and a Yashica Mat .... but not all at the same time!
Enjoy the Island Stephen. Say hello if you see me about.
I take photos with a Werra 3. This has interchangeable lenses and a rangefinder. In addition to the Tessar (50 mm) there is also a Flektogon with 35 mm and a Cardinar (100 mm, a Sonnar type). Yours is the Werra 1, a simpler version. There were also some with a light meter. The name Werra comes from a river of the same name.
Thanks Thomas. I wasn't sure if mine was the original version or the 1.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss the black are the later ones. The first version of the Werra 1 was green and had an other lens and a simpler shutter.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss ua-cam.com/channels/YslvCIFkYEEeFj8lyC1DUQ.html
The two guys from this channel are experts for the Werra.
@@thomasjosiger5789 ahh. Thanks Thomas
Roger, viewfinder cameras are ideal for Infrared photography. As you don't look through the lens you can compose your image with the viewfinder. In an SLR you would compose first then add the IR filter and then shoot. So no tripods and all that sh*t. Great option for summer time and harsh light.
Very true! I'm close to trying some IR so I'll have to remember that!
Interesting advancing system on that camera. Haven't seen that one before.
Bizarre isn't it Janne!
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Yeah it is. I remember one camera that has a long plunger you push to cock the shtuter and advance the frame. And some kodaks have the lever on the bottom. But this is the weirdest.
Seems to be a nice little shooter. That is indeed the oddest film advance I've ever seen but it seems like it should rather quick to use if you are shooting action or street images.
It's easy to get used to. It is strange though!
Ever tried cleaning old negatives from dust, mold, etc? Not the sexiest subject for a video, but would be interested to see how you might approach it.
P.S. Jena is pronounced Yena 😜
Ha Ha thanks!
Did you mean Fotospeed film, as it was the contrasty one?
Nice shots, I'm sure the guy wants the prints, one for home, one for the airfield office. Nice little camera, not so sure about that saw toothed film advance inside, if your sprockets are slightly off I could see some missed frames and overlain exposures there. Still, the proofs in the pudding.
There's something about 'compact' cameras that wins the style war with SLR's every time.
Ahh, no the paper is I find.
Just me, or does it get fuzzy on the sides and corners of the frame? Not sure if that's from a tessar design issue or if it's a sample variation issue. Lovely shots, and the swirly corners just add to the old-timey feel.
Cheers Mike. I can't remember now.
zeissikonveb.de/start/kameras/werra.html Here you can find more informations about this beautiful camera. It is in German. But you can use a translator.
There's me!
Your museum is awesome!
It's a working museum. I do use them. I've got more than I showed you. I think it's 108 at last count. I really should start a UA-cam channel...
@@jessta21 why not. people would be interested to see your collection one by one
I might have to extract my digit and do it. Thanks for a great channel by the way
I'm always amazed by your editing. Have you ever tried a lubitel?
Thanks. I have not tried that camera.
Beautiful little camera !
It seems like the prints are really good and sharp for 35mm, at 16×12" size.
How often do you print at this size ?
Cheers Ryan. I don't often print 16x12. Usually 10x8. I do have 24 inch prints on my walls from the darkroom.
Nice video and prints. Did you mean to say Fotospeed rather than Kentmere paper at 10:15?
I was using Fotospeed paper Mike. I'm so used to saying Kentmere!
That biplane is a great subject! I doubt that you have free access to the airfield though, were you accompanied by someone there?
Also! Photos of the lipstick rocket in the background? Or is it still considered a military secret?
You generally don't need anything special to go to a general aviation airport and take pictures, much less someone following you around. Just asking at the FBO or administrative office is most of the time more than enough.
I asked the owner and he said no problem so I went off and took pics. Just me. Main thing is to be respectful and sensible of where you are and keep away from the runway and filling area.
I picked up a Werra a few years ago. Sadly it's got a sticky shutter. Would love to get it sorted, but I don't know where or who would do it. Also it only cost me £2, so how much it would cost to repair might be more costly than buying another one?
I noticed some online for around £50.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Are you aware that the lens hood on these are also the lens caps?
@@wayneclayton5426 I did read that but couldn't figure it out. Only seems to fit one way
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss On mine , the lens hood has a thread on either end. The wide end screws into the wind on collar.
Go for V pronunciation. That is the standard German way. Americans are bit less decided. JFK played a game of Guess the question given the answer. A: Nein W. Q:Do you spell your name with a V Mr Wagner?
the pronunciation was not bad at all, in a few years you will speak german ;-)
It's a hard language to learn at an old age! I can count to ten though !
