  • Jughead goes through his catalog of records, chronologically, from Screeching Weasel, to The Mopes, to Even In Blackouts, listening to each record once, refreshing his memory and then spontaneously going through the songs to see what he remembers and what tickles his fancy about the song and the recording. Tonights Record: Screeching Weasels' My Brain Hurts.

    My Brain Hurts has always been one of my favorite rock records of all time. Thanks for being such a big part of it. The record still stands up today with its energy.

    I can watch this all day. John is a great guy. We use to bug him and gush weasel praise whenever we ran into him at Simon's. Very humble dude and he tolerated us very well.

    In 1994 one of my friends gave me a mix tape, and one whole side of the tape was "My Brain Hurts". To this day there is no other album that has had such a profound impact on me. I shortly starting playing guitar after, thank you jughead for being an inspiration artistically and musically. I started my own punk band playing anywhere we could. In to my twenties I got to record a professional record, I wore a SW t-shirt. Recording that record was so imoprtant to me, and I look back at it now as one of the best times of my life...
    Screeching Weasel is the most important band to me. I love every record up to the end of the 90s. However, my My Brain Hurts holds a special place in my heart.
    Thank you so much for this band!

    Love these Jughead. All of them. Miss you and the real SW. y’all released (Panic Button) my favorite 2000s record “Death by Televison”. Could you ever make a video discussing Panic Button and some of the bands on there. Or even how it all ended

    Hey, while I was running I got the feeling that I skipped over Don't Turn Out The Lights. I don't want to actually listen to myself again so I am going to assume I am right that I forgot it. The only thing I was going to say about that song is that I really really really liked that solo. I didn't at first, and it took me awhile to get the rhythm of when it comes in. But ultimately I enjoyed playing a solo that hovered over the fast guitars at what seems a more calm pace, a more flowing solo over fast guitars. I think it has a great feel to it. So Ben wrote that part and then he asked me to do some rock n roll solo over the part, Johnny B Good style. And that was about all I could come up with, I was never much for those type of solos, and it really didn't come into play much until Dan, B Face, and I started The Mopes.

    I would love to see a Pervo Devo video done. Especially if you get into talking about how Bruce LaBruce came to be involved and why his intro never appeared on Kill The Musicians.

    It was pointed out that I said Jim Ellison overdosed. I haven't gone back and listened to it, but I may have assumed that and said it because he was sadly part of that heroine seen that hit Chicago in the 90's. I got to know him fairly well in an art class at Colombia College. I was shocked when I heard about his death. I hadn't see him in years. Here is what the wickipedia has to say about him. I was surprised this was so short. He had a pretty substantial influence on Chicago and I thought his article would be more in depth:
    Jim Ellison (born James Walter Ellison) (April 18, 1964 - June 20, 1996) was the frontman for the band Material Issue. He tirelessly promoted his band, booked tours, and secured a major-label deal in 1990. Ellison - along with bassist Ted Ansani and drummer Mike Zelenko - would lead the renaissance of powerpop in the early 1990s. He committed suicide[1] on June 20, 1996, by carbon monoxide poisoning.

    There is that whole thing about people who "retire" from punk, but every so often, a person will "graduate". Like the whole experience as a punk rocker is just a sort of cosmic life lesson. I think you know whats up Jug.

    Dave Naked and Bob Fogarty, according to a message I just got from Bob, took the Greyhound too, but a day later. Makes sense, since I don't recall them on that abysmal ride with me and Panic.

    Mount Rushmore is like right off the freeway! Like a few miles down the road. I have a true story about Mount Rushmore and Screeching Weasel though! In 1993 I was driving to CA from MI with my cousin and we stopped at Mount Rushmore and it was kind of lame, but then we saw this corny tourist trap called BEAR COUNTY USA and so we stopped there. There was a rad punk girl working there and we were listening to this tape when we pulled up. We were like "Is this worth $8 each?" and she was like "I don't know, ever see a bear before?" Then she was like "Eh, you guys both look like you're under 12, and it's free if you're under 12" and raised the gate and we drove around and saw these really bored bears sitting around on some grass for free and listened to Screeching Weasel.

      Good story, but it is true, we never found Mount Rushmore. And now you will always have Beer County.

    Ha! On second listening I realize Science of Myth DOES NOT have a drum intro. I think it was the opposite, we had a drum beginning then changed it to us all coming in at once. Quite honestly, I don't know why I thought that.

      John Jughead Pierson I remember you playing it live with a drum (roll) intro-- I think you can hear it with that intro on Kill the Musicians on the Gillman live tracks. Right?

    Hey John are you going to tackle some of the 7"'s or songs like soap opera,or some of the stuff from the mrr comp they don't get paid they don't get laid but they sure do work hard just a thought
    Cheers man these are great videos

    • @JohnJughead

      Hey Anthony, I don't think so... but I'm not sure. If I have anything to say about those songs I'll try to fit something in. It is easier for me to remember larger chunks of time around full length albums. Locations always help me, and the longer in that location the better, so the full lengths are easier to recall for me. But I'll do my best!

    Hey Jughead, You make a coupla references to the name Gore Gore Girls. Wouldn't the Garage Punk Band of the same name been a lil miffed if you'd of used their name?

    • @JohnJughead
      @JohnJughead  6 років тому

      Well... I don't know when that band formed, but in the day, there was no internet, so to check if another band had your name, you'd wait for them to contact you. And that never happened in our short career as a band, so I don't think it is an issue.

    Jim Ellison actually committed suicide. I'm not trying to be snotty, just thought it might be a good idea to redact the whole overdose thing;the internet being what it is and all.

    • @JohnJughead
      @JohnJughead  8 років тому +1

      I knew it was suicide, I think I avoided saying that, but I didn't realize I said overdose. I will go back and listen and write something about it. I have used his name twice once on my podcast and once on this youtube episode. I actually got along with him pretty well. We went to Columbia College together. I was shocked when I heard he died. I hadn't seen him in a long time.

      John Jughead Pierson Yeah man. I don't want to be the fanned out guy, but y'alls music has been so important to me since I was 12 years old; I'm 33 now. Boogada was the second album I bought right behind Red Medicine, and all the preceding albums meant just as much. I would pick up a Screeching Weasel album and then buy albums from the Look Out! leaflet that came with them. That's how I got into Avail and other Look Out! artists. So-without trying to make you too uncomfortable-you guys are some of a lot of the reason I'm a musician today. Point being: It's blows my mind that I'm conversing with you. Anyway, thanks.
