Now theoretically speaking if you were to say hop on my back and I were to piggy back you, do you think that our speed would exceed the maximum velocity of an African Swallow?
Been riding for years, and I have definitely gotten too complacent in my form. Always good to get these reminders to re train myself and body. Thanks Tommie
Was just starting to learn everything you discussed in this video the end of last season. I was looking for more info on tips to get better & bam!! Just what I need with the season early here. Thanks for putting out these amazing vids. I used your videos last yr, along with some lessons, and did so much better than I ever imagined.
These videos are so helpful! I am a skier whose trying out snowboarding this year and hoping to go in a snowboard race in march.. these tutorials are so clear and easy to follow and leave me excited to go out snowboarding again!
30 years of SB and i like to go fast. I agree with all your drills, i love drill 3 (superfast edges changes) if i have muscle contractions on the slopes. I saw it being called undercarving in an old tutorial. Great work Tommy!
I needed this! I kept rotating slightly at Keystone. I had to change my binding stance a bit to compensate. but i think I'll move it back and test it out.
@@tommiebennett Just wanted to come back and say thanks! I went to keystone yesterday. I switched back to duck and did my best to keep my rear shoulder aligned more with the board. One of the most fun days I've had on a mountain. I even started practicing my switch riding better. P.S I started applying more toe side pressure with my shins like you said in another video and my transitions were so much better overall. I'm going back tomorrow. Hope to catch you sometime!
Over time I've been applying many things from your videos and I'm now trying to convince others, who are at different stages of their riding and struggle with the basics, to watch your explanations and understand how important is a strong body position in building that confidence
Really helpful Tommie, thanx 😊 Tips for getting the belly button lower and avoiding the waist bend thing would be a good video if you didn't already make one.
Cannot for the life of me seemed to hold a straight line on my toe Edge. I almost always start getting pulled further to my right. Lately I've been experimenting a bit by opening up my front knee so that it's pointing more down the fall line, so that my body is facing forward slightly following my knee. (Not counter - rotated) That seems to help counteract the boards inclination to turn).
Don’t ride after the sun goes down. If you go faster the quicker you will cross straight ice patch. Get low, almost stay in a squat on an edge. If you fall it won’t be as bad.
Just discovered you and love your videos, I have only snowboarded for a week in Snowmass Village but plan to go back this spring break, I plan to go to CSU to become a snowboard instructor or at least work in a resort, I love the sport and only wish it was possible in Texas lol.
Question: just to understand ,when your switching from edge to edge , quickly, what stops you from catching an edge at that moment.? Im really trying to learn how to sb faster down the MT
When your board is pointing downhill the side cuts of the board make it easier to initiate side to side turns. Thats why when you are initiating a turn u want ur board to naturally point downward first and then u apply pressure to turn. You are basically at this step when going fast - ur board is facing downwards and you can move side to side easier by using ur knees to dig the board into the snow and staying centered without leaning, that allows u to not catch an edge. This applies only to small quick edge switches.
It's the quick edge to edge that leaves virtually no time in between to "catch an edge". Technically speaking, you are catching the opposite edge over and over (as you switch from edge to edge), but with control because you have fully committed to that opposite edge each time.
@Tommie Bennett Hi. Can you advise me on which stance is suitable for the exercises? I used to a ducky stance but I've got doubts about using it in carving
I have a question, and I really hope this doesn't come off as annoying or trying to be smart as - cause I'm really not. Right at the end of your ride (09.22) you make a full stop, where you twist your opper body (this is something I tend to do). And I'm watching your videos, trying to figure out if this i like a no-go, in general. So is this just a tiny detail, that I should normally try to avoid doing myself, or is that a good way to make a full stop in certain situations?
Technically, he's keeping his upper body as it was while twisting his lower body. He did this to slow down, while still watching where he is going. There is nothing wrong with this maneuver, if your goal is to slow down.
These seem like pretty good tips ^^ I haven't gone snowboarding in years (last time I went was maybe 2017 or 2018, before speed tracking apps were at all reliable), but I was doing it a tone when I was going regularly. I remember there was a few days when my dad and I just bommed those mile long black diamond runs on the backside (most likely rail splitter to down under). I think we had it down to somewhere around 4.5-6 minutes from getting off the lift to getting back on it. Doing that was fun but also scary as hell! The amount of board chatter I was getting was a bit unnerving and I am wondering now if doing these drills would've helped me maintain more controll or if I was just pushing my board beyond what it could reasonably handle. What do you think? At what speed do you think anyone would find it hard to controll their board?
Camber boards tend to grip the snow better than other shapes but speed wobbles can start at high speeds for just about everyone- it just depends on the board, the riding stance, and the speed. I've ridden a bit above 70mph on a board and you really need to make sure the run is clear- even hitting small hucks will launch you 30-40 feet at that speed. It feels pretty scary on most boards to get much above 50mph and I wouldn't even attempt much above 40mph on certain boards. Best advice at speed is to always be slightly on edge as Tommie was saying- 10% or so. If you try to ride flat at speeds above 50mph, you'll probably take a hell of a fall at some point.
@@AlanLamb11 this excellent perspective. and I feel the same way. above 50mph, safely (1st), most people are chosing agressive binding angles, (definitely no duck), directional shapes, forward lean etc. Not saying you *have* to do that to go that fast, but that most people are probably doing those things (if theyre putting safety 1st)
I ride a capita outerspace living. I've been hitting speeds in mid 90kph board gets a lot of chatter want to get 100kph can anyone recommend a board that will handle going that fast without feeling like a death trap
Tommy Great to see you posting! This is my favorite time of year. Hey what is your opinion on the Burton Custom Camber 150? I am about the same size & Shape as you, as have narrowed it down to that board. Wanted to see if you have any recommendation or favorites? Thank you!

unrelated to the video but dryland training just the past month or two leading to the season has made me so much better already this year.

What kind of glove/mitts are those? They appear to have a zipper on the front edge? Can you provide a Brand and Model name?
When your going down the hill fast on a flat surface. Do you try to keep a small edge or do you keep your board flat?
ALWAYS keep a small edge, or you are destined to catch an edge!

Learn to ollie on flat. Then over small bumps. Eventually small jumps or side hits

Gaining speed on a narrow track is a very big challenge. Hopefully the drills in this video will help to get more comfortable.
