God doesn’t choose for you. He allows you to use the wisdom that he’s given you so you can choose someone who’s right for you. The idea that God chooses for you can leave you waiting for ever to meet the “one that God chose for you.” If he chose for you then where’s your free will? He gives us free will and wisdom to choose wisely who we’re going to spend the rest of our live with. Imagine being with someone for 10 years and things aren’t “working out anymore” so we start thinking “this must not be who God chose for me.” …No. We choose (wisely) and then we make a commitment to that person and we work through the ups and downs.

Roman Catechism of the Council of Trent
      The Duties of Married People
The more easily to preserve the holy state (of marriage) from dissensions, the duties of husband and wife as inculcated by St. Paul and by the Prince of the Apostles must be explained.
      Duties Of A Husband
It is the duty of the husband to treat his wife generously and honourably. It should not be forgotten that Eve was called by Adam his companion. The woman, he says, whom thou gavest me as a companion. Hence it was, according to the opinion of some of the holy Fathers, that she was formed not from the feet but from the side of man; as, on the other hand, she was not formed from his head, in order to give her to understand that it was not hers to command but to obey her husband.
The husband should also be constantly occupied in some honest pursuit with a view to provide necessaries for the support of his family and to avoid idleness, the root of almost every vice.
He is also to keep all his family in order, to correct their morals, and see that they faithfully discharge their duties.
      Duties Of A Wife
On the other hand, the duties of a wife are thus summed up by the Prince of the Apostles: Let wives be subject to their husbands. that if any believe not the word, they may be won without the word by the conversation of the wives, considering your chaste conversation with fear. Let not their adorning be the outward plaiting of the hair, or the wearing of gold, or the putting on of apparel: but the hidden man of the heart in the incorruptibility of a quiet and meek spirit, which is rich in the sight of God. For after this manner heretofore the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him Lord.
To train their children in the practice of virtue and to pay particular attention to their domestic concerns should also be especial objects of their attention. The wife should love to remain at home, unless compelled by necessity to go out; and she should never presume to leave home without her husband's consent.
Again, and in this the conjugal union chiefly consists, let wives never forget that next to God they are to love their husbands, to esteem them above all others, yielding to them in all things not inconsistent with Christian piety, a willing and ready obedience.
      Ben Sira 26:1-3,16-19,24
[1]HAPPY is the husband of a good wife: for the number of his years is double.
[2]A virtuous woman rejoiceth her husband: and shall fulfil the years of his life in peace.
[3]A good wife is a good portion, she shall be given in the portion of them that fear God, to a man for his good deeds.
[16]The grace of a diligent woman shall delight her husband, and shall fat his bones.
[17]Her discipline is the gift of God.
[18]Such is a wise and silent woman, and there is nothing so much worth as a well instructed soul.
[19]A holy and shamefaced woman is grace upon grace.
[24]As everlasting foundations upon a solid rock, so the commandments of God In the heart of a holy woman.
      1 Timothy 2:9-14
[9]In like manner, women also in decent apparel: adorning themselves with modesty and sobriety, not with plaited hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly attire:
[10]But, as it becometh women professing godliness, with good works.
[11]Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
[12]But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to use authority over the man: but to be in silence.
[13]Adam was first formed; then Eve.
[14]And Adam was not seduced; but the woman, being seduced, was in the transgression.
      1 Timothy 3:4-5,11
[4]One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all chastity.
[5]But if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?
[11]The women in like manner: chaste, not slanderers, but sober, faithful in all things.
      1 Corinthians 11:3,7-9
[3]But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ: and the head of the woman is the man: and the head of Christ is God.
[7]The man indeed ought not to cover his head: because he is the image and glory of God. But the woman is the glory of the man.
[8]For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man.
[9]For the man was not created for the woman: but the woman for the man.
      Titus 2:3-5,9
[3]The aged women, in like manner, in holy attire, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teaching well:
[4]That they may teach the young women to be wise, to love their husbands, to love their children.
[5]To be discreet, chaste, sober, having a care of the house, gentle, obedient to their husbands: that the word of God be not blasphemed.
[9]Exhort servants to be obedient to their masters: in all things pleasing, not gainsaying:
      1 Peter 3:1-7
[1]In like manner also, let wives be subject to their husbands: that, if any believe not the word, they may be won without the word, by the conversation of the wives,
[2]Considering your chaste conversation with fear.
[3]Whose adorning, let it not be the outward plaiting of the hair, or the wearing of gold, or the putting on of apparel:
[4]But the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptibility of a quiet and a meek spirit which is rich in the sight of God.
[5]For after this manner heretofore, the holy women also who trusted in God adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands:
[6]As Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters you are, doing well and not fearing any disturbance.
[7]Ye husbands, likewise dwelling with them according to knowledge, giving honour to the female as to the weaker vessel and as to the co-heirs of the grace of life: that your prayers be not hindered.
      Ephesians 5:22-24,33
[22]Let women be subject to their husbands, as to the Lord:
[23]Because the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church. He is the saviour of his body.
[24]Therefore as the church is subject to Christ: so also let the wives be to their husbands in all things.
[33]Nevertheless, let every one of you in particular love for his wife as himself: And let the wife fear her husband.
      Colossians 3:18-21
[18]Wives, be subject to your husbands, as it behoveth in the Lord.
[19]Husbands, love your wives and be not bitter towards them.
[20]Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing to the Lord.
[21]Fathers, provoke not your children to indignation, lest they be discouraged.

I was hospitalized at 5 months pregnant and had to stay there until I had an emergency c section at 7 months pregnant. I could have died and he still didn’t propose. Fast forward 2 1/2 years later and still nothing. I sleep in my daughter’s bedroom. You’ve found a great man who will hopefully be there to get you to Heaven. Thank God for him everyday. 🙏🏻✝️

The Church needs to address social media and how married couples should navigate that when married. It’s compromised a lot of couples and men tend to get a lot more suggestive and sexual stuff on their feeds which is soooo degrading to women, their spouse and society in general.

Thank you very much for your very thorough and excellent answer to my lament. Thank you for taking the time to lay it out as clear a path as possible to someone who you didn’t have a clue about. I think that’s part of what Faith is and sometimes we share it with total strangers. I had had some surgery about three weeks ago when I am still in recovery but I am doing much better and I’ve been blessed not only to have. Fr. Mike is a sounding board, but I also have the two parish priests who have watched over me with loving care. I can never be thankful or grateful enough to all of the prayers that I received the well wishes that came my way. It will take me a lifetime to pay and save them all back so it’s a good thing the doctor left me in a condition so that I can do just that in a few weeks just get on with my life. I think the most important distinction about the contract covenant discussion is that covenant is one form of a contract. At the BASE Marriage is a form of a contract, but it's not MERELY a contract.
I would define and distinguish it this way.
I think you have a good working definition of contract, an agreement, exchanging goods and services, that would be the largest, widest umbrella of agreement. Thomas Aquinas utilizes the definition of a contract to describe marriage. He by no means has a utilitarian based definition. He's simply defining the basic terms and conditions of what it is to be married, what it means to agree to marry someone. There are basic elements that persist, though there are more sacred and beautiful elements that are also crucial.
Falling under that would be something like a more life impacting contract. Consider the contract of a job, and employment. Perhaps the contract of a will.
Elevate that, and you start to tap into something akin to a Covenant, which is ultimately an agreement between a human being and God, or a sacred contract between persons.
Lastly, you have the Sacraments. They are Covenants, but the ultimate form of a Covenant, in that they are sealed by the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ and the Life of the Holy Spirit

Are you Catholic? Is you wife Christian of another denomination or non Christian? There's ways to convalidate your marriage within the Church. You should ask your parish priest for more info. There's been many in situations similar to yours, e.g. they were lapsed Catholic at the time they married and therefore not within the Church, and later seek to make things right within the Church, i.e. convalidate their marriage. There's a special procedure for it.

I agree with Father that marriage is not contractual in the sense "if you do this I'll do that," yet we shouldn't forget that the Church, in Her wisdom, has used to the 'term' contract to describe marriage canonically. Marriage is a sacramental covenant and it is also a contract. Husband and wife do exchange bodily rights for those acts which per se give rise to children (i.e. bodily rights). That is a form of contract. 1012 § 1. Christ the Lord himself raised the matrimonial contract among baptized people to the dignity of a Sacrament. § 2. Wherefore, among baptized people there can be no valid marriage contract unless it is at the same time a Sacrament. (Code of Canon Law, 1917). The 1983 code also includes the language of contract: "a valid matrimonial contract cannot exist between the baptized without it being by that fact a sacrament."

He wasn’t the person I married and buy the actions made me not the person he married. After getting my head put into a cement wall. Sorry, brick wall. and other horrible things that I can’t type on this page that if I ever and it’s a big ever decided to fall in love again and that’s a big if on the love part, I would still be married to this man no matter what the cook county courts say.
I thought I dodged a bullet because I wasn’t married in the Catholic Church. My parents wouldn’t allow it but I was married in and I’m not going to say the name of the orthodox religion but I found out that they were like distant cousins far removed from Roman Catholics, so it still counts , how can that be? How can God do that? Please explain that to me anybody just explain it to me I’ve been asking that question for almost 20 years, my spiritual advisor who has gotten me through a lot of really horrible things and that one says that’s just the way it is, it’s not something we can change. Abuse is not ok or accepted in or by the church. It is not ordained by God. It is grave sin!
I beg that this be said every time they speak about marriage such as in this interview. My pastor is very good about saying this.
That is one reason why the church has annulments. I’m so sorry that you were abused so horribly. I pray for your healing. I believe that abuse happens in more marriages than we care to admit. Priests, marriage counselors and marriage prep ministers should be talking about this openly and often. That is - they should address what constitutes physical, mental, emotional, sexual abuse, and that it is not acceptable and what steps should be taken to prevent or get out of the situation. Obviously a relationship like that is not ordained by God. It is filled with grave sin.

I'm sorry to hear what happened to you. Perhaps your parents had an inkling? Anyway, I can only say, what happened is the result of your husband's own actions.
You know how we all have free will... Our actions are not controlled by God so if we ask Him why He let it happen then we should think of it that way.
The Lord gave us the 10 commandments way way back, during Moses' time. We also know abt the 7 Deadly Sins and yet we humans still choose to commit sins. Especially when we rarely go to mass and confess our sins or pray, we are more susceptible to the influence of evil. This means, people are more prone to do wrong to others because they think they can just do anything and get away with it.
Anyway, what I suggest would be for you to look up offering the suffering to God. Since you've already suffered a lot, it's something worth checking on.
Know that God loves you. ❤ 🙏

You asked a question in such a chaotic way, that it's difficult to answer not knowing the situation. So you should listen to what your spiritual director is saying.🤷‍♀️
If you were married in, for example, the Eastern Orthodox or Oriental Church then, since the Catholic Church considers their sacraments valid, the marriage as well, even though there was I assume a lack of proper canonical form or proper dispensation. If that's what you mean by the strange description of 'distant cousins far removed from'. But it may get more complicated, depending which exact Church/denomination/religion you mean. Some would be considered valid, some wouldn't. So your spiritual director is probably right. If you have further doubts, you may consult Canon lawyer.

I think there's an instance wherein God Himself allows marriage to be dissolved and that is if the cause of separation has something to do with adultery. It is even in the Bible (Matthew 19:9). Now, it was also mentioned in verse 9 that anyone who marries a woman with whom a husband separated due to adultery will be guilty of adultery as well. The Bible didn't say anything about a woman who will marry a man who broke off the marriage due to adultery. I'm thinking that this is because God already views the marriage as no longer valid and the spouse who broke off the marriage and the "new" person are already free from guilt. Adultery is so serious that it can invalidate a marriage and from my understanding of Matthew 19:9, there is no more way for the erring spouse to get married or get into a new relationship again since the erring spouse would be like leading the "new"person in his/her life to sin. They will be both guilty of adultery. Being adulterous is bad enough but causing others to commit the same sin would definitely be worst. Marriage is a covenant that one can never easily get away from. Never ever commit adultery.

    • @joane24

In Catholic interpretation, it's not about divorce exception in cases of adultry, not at all. It's _porneia_ which is sexual immortality in broader sense, and most likely a situation that would render the marriage invalid from the beginning, such as for example incest marriage. Or other kinds of sexual illicitness. Point is, the marriage is illicit from the start by its own configuration. (some Protestant denominations may have different theology and interpretation here, but Catholic is this).

Jesus said that marriageful unfaithfulness is the one and only warrant for divorce. This is sexual infidelity and true abuse. One is able to forgive and redeem what is broken, but at that point that is a decision of the hurt party's comfort and wisdom.
God saw his covenant as having been broken by Isreal. Just because its not a contract doesnt mean there werent conditions. God said he would continue to give blessings to Isreal and let them keep the land so long as they followed the Torah. Read the book the Habakuk and you will see that God was ever gracious and forgiving to Isreal even though He was in his rights to consider the covenant voided.
In the end, God did void his covenant with Isreal as he exiled them into Babylon, took away his presence with the arch of the covenant, and witheld his blessings (at least for a time).
Please consider what I have said before you judge the victim of martial harm for remarriage. They have suffered enough, and they have the right to end the marriage and find a new spouse if they chose.

But there's also a beautiful theology for the celibacy for the Kingdom of God, and that also includes celibate priesthood, and it's what I was trying to point to. So, if Jesus isn't God, who, or, what, is He? Also, Jesus claimed to be God, so He is either God, He's insane, or He's lying. If He is God, then you say you believe Him not man; well, man has constantly tried to claim He isn't God, He was just a prophet, meanwhile Jesus specifically claimed to be God by saying He existed before Abraham, what else could He be? Angels don't have bodies, and scripture doesn't testify to the existence of any other supernatural beings other than God. Also, if Jesus wasn't God, then He's insane, and you...believe an insane man? To say thy sins are forgiven thee, or to say take up your mat and walk? But to show you that the Son of Man can forgive sins, "I say to you, take up you mat and walk." And the man rose and left.
So the people asked who can forgive sins but God alone? And Jesus said, exactly, and to prove it, here's a miracle.
Secondly in John 8:53-58, the people are accusing Jesus of being possessed by the devil, and they ask Him, "Whom dost thou make thyself?" (basically, "who do you think you are?") Jesus replies "...it is My Father who glorifies me..." If the Father is Jesus's Father, the Jesus is the Son of the Father, and if the Father is God, then by nature of being God's Son, Jesus is God. Jesus confirms this three verses later. Jesus says Abraham rejoiced to see His coming, and the people ask, "You're aren't even fifty years old, how have you seen Abraham?" To which Jesus responded "Amen Amen I say to you (Amen Amen means I solemnly swear my life on this claim) before Abraham ever was, I AM." I AM is the identity that God gave to Himself that the Israelites would know Him when they were in Egypt, and here, Jesus uses the exact same name in reference to Himself, and was almost stoned to death because He said that.
So, no, Jesus claiming to be God is not insane, it is literally what He solemnly swore to be the truth. Man has tried, from the beginning, to claim that Jesus isn't God, while He claimed He is God.
As for when Jesus is claiming the Father is the only true God, He also says "the Father and I are one..." The Father is God, Jesus and the Father are one, therefore, Jesus is God. How can there be two beings who are God and at the same time only be one God? Actually there's three, the Holy Spirit being the third, and we call it the Trinity. Three beings, one God. We can't understand it perfectly because we are not God, but God Himself swore that it is true. Therefore, we can either reject it, or we can throw ourselves on God's Providence and accept it though we don't understand it.

@@christophergusack433 YOU SAY IT IS A MYSTERY WHY THERE’S THREE PERSONS AS ONE GOD. YOU SAY JESUS AND THE FATHER ARE GOD, AND JUST SO HAPPEN TO PLACE THE HOLY GHOST IN THERE BECAUSE YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND THEIR ROLE OR RELATIONSHIP.
IT’S BECAUSE IT’S A FALSE DOCTRINE. NO WHERE IN SCRIPTURE IS THERE A SUCH THING AS “GOD THE SON” OR “GOD THE HOLY GHOST.” THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD, AND THAT IS THE FATHER.
MARK 2 CAN BE CROSS REFERENCED TO MATTHEW 9, WHERE JESUS TELLS US THAT HE FORGAVE THE MAN’S SINS, BUT THE PEOPLE DID NOT BELIEVE THE MAN’S SINS WERE FORGIVEN. JESUS SAYS THAT BECAUSE WE DON;T SEE IT, WE DON’T BELIEVE. AS AN EXAMPLE, HE HEALS THE MAN…
BUT JESUS TELLS US SOMETHING IN MATTHEW 9:
"BUT WHEN THE MULTITUDES SAW IT, THEY MARVELLED, AND *GLORIFIED GOD, WHICH HAD GIVEN SUCH POWER UNTO MEN."* MATTHEW 9:8
WE AS CHRISTIANS HAVE THE POWER TO FORGIVE SINS *ON THE EARTH* AS WELL (MATT 9:6). AS A MATTER OF FACT, WE WILL NOT BE FORGIVEN OUR SINS *UNLESS* WE FORGIVE THE SINS OF OUR TRESPASSERS.
“AND WHEN YE STAND PRAYING, FORGIVE, IF YE HAVE OUGHT AGAINST ANY: THAT YOUR FATHER ALSO WHICH IS IN HEAVEN MAY FORGIVE YOU YOUR TRESPASSES. BUT IF YE DO NOT FORGIVE, NEITHER WILL *YOUR FATHER WHICH IS IN HEAVEN* FORGIVE YOUR TRESPASSES.” MARK 11:25-26
