- Carrier Air Wing is a shoot'em up game released by Capcom in 1990, for the Arcade rooms. Is also known as US Navy.
The 1990s was a decade of great change marked by growing friendships between old enemies and never before seen levels of cooperation between the powerful nations of the world.
However, in 1997, using unusual new weapons designed in secrecy, the Middle Eastern country of Rabu threatened to destroy this fragile peace. Rabu's purported goal is to purge the world of sin and force a new morality.
They seemed unstoppable, but when they gassed Tokyo in 1999, U.S. intervention became unavoidable. If Rabu is allowed to use Japan's manufacturing facilities, there will be no end to the nightmare.

I can still remember a small audience gathered around this game when it was new at the local arcade. It was heavy metal awesome.. simpler times, when playing a game successfully made you feel like you could, by such simple means, have control and mastery over your life.

Tuff game, but well worth the time as the end of game boss was well put together and a worthy challenge.
The last level is another tribute to the legendary level 3 from R-Type.

I was just wondering what that one 2D side-scrolling plane shooter I played when I was really young was called, and it was really bugging me that I couldn't find it, but now I've finally found it again because it was included on Steam in the Capcom Arcade Stadium DLC collection.
Now is time to enjoy it again.
Game is super cool. As a HUGE U.N. Squadron fan on SNES, seeing the arcade version and its sequal here, is rad.
That said, Carrier Air Wing's music pails dramatically compared to U.N. Squadron's SNES counterpart.
Lot of people say me the same about the comparison between backgrounds. Anyway Carrier still has some good themes for me but hey, I've not a deep knowledge of the first game.
This game was my early childhood
So take a look to UN Squadron, you'll like it cause it's the spiritual prequel.

Great game, surprised it never received a home port.
Spiritual sequel to UN Squadron, this first one had a SNES port. Some Capcom arcades like this, Willow or Cadillac & Dinosaurs maybe were to hard to convert.
@@RetroDanuart this was called US Navy in the UK. Loved this genre. Particularly this one, Nemesis and Thundercross. I think there was a similar game called 1942, then 1943 but didn't scroll left to right, was vertical. Thank you for posting this. Brilliant.🤗

Honestly, in one of the arcades where I lived as a child, it was called US Navy. That was the search term I used to find it here! Really! Maybe they imported it in 1990, who knows.
I'll look out for 1942 - thank you. After this genre, I moved onto 'Double Dragon 1 and 2', 'Hit the Ice', 'Pit Fighter' and my next favourite later in 1993 or 94 was 'Mortal Kombat'. Thank you again.

The only thing this game needed was an improved snes sound track like area 88.
Like the OST, some tracks reminds me the Final Fight Area bay stage.

Lo pasaba siempre con una moneda hace 30 años, siempre jugaba con el avion del medio, en cambio ayer lo descarge y tuve que continuar 15 o 20 veces para terminarlo..
Con el tiempo se pierde, pero todo es practicar un poquillo...

Sure, I saw it in many arcade rooms at that time.
I loved the arcade UN Squadron, one of my favorite games of all time. This one was good too, but the music wasn’t as good, and I hated the fuel gimmick. It seemed to artificially make the game harder just so you had to spend more money. You shouldn’t lose “life” if you’re not taking damage.
Yes I agree in all of your statement, but the coin operators work that way. They don't want you to last too long...
@@RetroDanuart oh I know. The countless beat’em ups where your “special” move would also drain your life was the same thing. At least modern remakes like Streets of Rage 4 allow you to earn the lost health back making it a risk/reward system.
If you do shooters for your channel, there’s a great one on PS1 called Einhander, you should check it out.
Hola Retro Danuart buen Game play una pregunta que juegos de naves son los mas difíciles que jugastes yo por ejemplo P47, Dodonpachi. Y otra pregunta disculpa por que los juegos de arcade tienen mejores graficos que las consolas de video juegos.
No he jugado muchos juegos de naves pero salvo el ThunderForce 4 todos me parecen dificilísimos.
Los arcade generalmente tienen mejores gráficos básicamente porque tienen mayor capacidad técnica que las consolas.

A mi me gusta bastante a pesar de su elevada dificultad made in capcom.
Muy buena. Este lo tengo yo en la lista de pendientes. En su día me lo conseguí terminar en recreativa, creo que dentro de los matamarcianos era de relativamente asequible. Tomaré nota de los trucos que utilizas. Un saludo.
Es mas jugable que el UN Squadron pero el problema son los jefes finales, que pierdes Fuel con el paso del tiempo. Al menos en esos combates no debería ser así ya que te penaliza enormemente.
Por lo demás juegazo, mas de memoria que de reflejos.
@@RetroDanuart Efectivamente, tienes toda la razón. Al principio uno piensa "qué bien, si me dan un toque me quitan algo de vida pero no me matan", pero con la bajada constante de fuel, la consecuencia es que en los jefes finales vas pelado y con un toque te matan. Además que en ciertos jefes "por partes" (como el del tren) entre parte y parte te tienen un poquito parado mientras se activa la segunda parte del jefe, se coloca la cámara y tal, pero el fuel SI baja. Capcom pensó muy bien el robo.
@@saltoypatada9218 Y lo malo es que creo que no se puede modificar mediante Dip Switches, algo que por ejemplo si se puede en el WWF Superstars en el que te permiten recargar energía entre combate y combate.
De todas maneras tampoco difiere mucho de otros beat'em ups ladrones de Capcom. Mas de 2 toques y estas muerto...

What do the Blue and Red power-ups do?
There are 3 pods: Blue, red and green. They give you different firing range. IMHO the blue is almost useless.

I had actually never heard of Carrier Air Wing until tonight when I was checking out Capcom shmups on their Arcade Stadium releases. When I saw thumbnails of the game I thought that this WAS U.N. Squadron (aka Area 88) lol, given how recycled so many assets from that game were reused for Carrier Air Wing. Maybe Capcom knew that U.N. Squadron would be a legal nightmare in the future so this was their way to give the game a new legacy that Capcom could keep for themselves.

Si te refieres al general que nos da las instrucciones entre fase y fase, está claramente inspirado en Sean Connery, aunque el parecido es aún mas marcado en la versión japonesa.

i played it when i was a kid in am arcade... and I also remember that there was another f14 simulator around that game

Joguei também aqui em SP na região central da cidade. A primeira vez que vi uma máquina com esse jogo foi por volta de 1991 mais ou menos, numa casa de flipper pequena que tinha na rua XV de Novembro.

pues para mi no era nada dificil, era mas dificil el de hammering harry xD(teniendo en cuenta que jugue la rehostia de titulos, en cada sala recreativa los findes xD) , que tenia que estirar las 500 pesetas de paga xD
Bueno este para ser un matamarcianos no es que sea imposible de acabar, su principal dificultad al menos para mi, es que contra los enemigos finales el tanque de combustible se sigue vaciando poco a poco, y con un toque la puedes palmar, y sólo tienes una vida.
El Hammerin harry es bastante mas fácil si lo has practicado un poco, pero es mas difícil de lo que parece.
tu recuerdas el snow bros ? , el sunset riders y su version ninja, el toy agent, etc estos buenos de su epoca

JUEGAZO, el avion azul era el mejor. Llegaba a la final con una sola ficha. Alguna vez le gane al satelite, pero las menos
Tiene mérito es un juego típico de Capcom, largo y complicado. Coincido que el avión azul es el mas equilibrado de todos.

Turns with a Whoosh sound, to let you know you are flying a mighty war machine. Not quite as heavy metal Awesome as the thunderous WHOOOOSH turn of UN Squadron, but still conveys a sense of power :D

personalmente me gusta mas el un squadron, pero este juego no estuvo nada mal
Imagino que porque lo has jugado mas y la nostalgia siempre suma mas puntos. Es una segunda parte espiritual del UN muy mejorada en casi todos los aspectos, aunque los gráficos del primero quizá tengan mas encanto.
Si que veo a este Carrier mas jugable a la hora de maniobrar el avión, ya que UN Squadron al menos para mi adolece de poca precisión en ese aspecto.

@@quimeysoto6109 U.N Squadron es superior en todos los aspectos: desde OST hasta maniobrabilidad, pasando por gráficos, rejugabilidad y diseño de etapas y sprites.
Yo que recuerde en el juego original el segundo jefe rotaba su torreta al disparar
No descartes un fallo de emulación, aunque a veces recordamos cosas que luego no son como creíamos...

all in all this game is a lot better than Area 88, however they really dropped the ball when it comes to the music copared to the first game. It's not bad, it's just really lackluster.

Anyway the music from UN Squadron is far better.
The train mission music was about as bad as the rest IMO. I tried to give it another chance based on your comment but I just can’t give any part of this sound track the thumbs up.ESPECIALLY compared to UN Squadron-easily one of the best OSTs on SNES.
Great game though, can’t lie about solid gameplay.

IMHO No, specially talking about controls. The handling of the plane in UN Squadron is quite rough and affects the gameplay.

Gameplay and visuals are solid, but just lacks the soul of UN Squadron. The music and sound design is atrocious other than the gun sound.
Really I don't think the sound is so bad...
Music sounds second rate only when u compare it to the first game, UN Squadron, because UN was the gold standard. This sequel is a close second, I mean is there anything quite like the feel and taste of something new? Some of the tracks on this game Are quite memorable, the tracks from missions 9 and 10 IMO are awesome, as well as some of the boss fighting music. It all depends which game you played First, that one will steal your heart..

I could not say it’s better, both have their unique charm.
The music is not as good as in UN Squadron. Its kind of dissapointing in this game.
UN Squadron has some oustanding themes, but Carrier Air Wing rocks too. Some of the musics reminds me The bay area from Final Fight.
@@RetroDanuart every track on UN Squadron is a banger with a well defined, memorable melody. Carrier Air Wings has a few moments where the OST isn’t quite as shrill as others, but none of it is memorable with very little emphasis paid to melody. It doesn’t get in the way of the gameplay, and does fit an arcade setting ok. But the standard had to be higher on home consoles, since once you bought the game you would be playing it a lot without having to constantly shove quarters in, so capcom pulled out all the stops to make the experience pop. Just my opinion of course as a musician and lover of shmups. CAW is a great game (possibly better than UN Squadron) but music and sound design is its glaring weak spot IMO
