Going back later is literally the best. It’s more of an appreciation of what you are learning and life experience to relate it to. I am so much more of a scholar as an adult student rather than traditional. Also had better grades because I wasn’t wrapped in the social scene.

Please don't be intimidated, I'm going back at 26. One of the hardest lessons I'm learning is the fact that "I have time". Your doing great. The first step is always intimidating but I empathize with people that start later and only start when they are ready. Just don't let other people project their insecurity onto you. You get respect from people but some are just the most discouraging simply because they aren't at the same point of life that you are. You got this!

This inspired me, because I was getting discouraged that all my classmates were graduating at 22. And yet I was 22 and still a sophomore. Now I’m 23 and staying on campus. I still feel like I’m behind, because I will be graduating at 25. I wish I took my freshman year seriously, but I have to remind myself God was taking me on a journey and building my character. Because who knows what would have happen if I graduated early I probably mentally, emotionally, and spiritually stuck, and that could have cause me to be more depressed and oppressed. Now I’m 23 I’m more mentally, emotionally, and spiritually mature. And I’m finally get to experience the college life

Y'all take it from someone who went back to school at 25 and is finally graduating now at 28, IT DOES NOT MATTER. Trust me I know exactly how it feels to feel left behind but you will all be fine. And honey you're still young af talking about I'll be graduating at 25, that is young. Just keep your head high and do not lose focus. Most people start getting their shit together at 30. And even if not, own lane own pace, right? Trust me, I see it clearer now

Im going back at 24! College triggered my depression and anxiety. I too went to school first for political science but I changed my major after my first semester. I've dropped out twice but now that I know more about myself I think it'll be easier to navigate through those emotions my mental health brings.

I'm STILL in school at 23 for political science, started at 17 went straight through. I got BURNED OUTTTTT. I was withdrawing many semesters, my mental health suffered. I finally got help with my anxiety by learning that I am neurodivergent, it made so much sense why I didn't fit in socially, why I'm super smart but could no longer focus and comprehend the way I could. I knew it was bad when it started affecting my grades. I used to feel embarsed that its taking me so long but now I'm proud I hung in there. I'll most likely be graduating at 24, but that's okay. As long as I am going to school working at my own pace and finally getting the accommodations that I need. Go for it you know yourself and now you know what you need and what can you can handle.

I'm still here at 23 too. I graduate fall 2023. I started fall 2018. I was a political science major too for about a year before i switched to psychology. I struggled a lot mentally when I first got here but it helped me realized that I wanted a career in psych, so that I could help others, too. The burn out is real, and taking a break has been suggested to me a lot. But I'm glad I stayed. And now I'm nearly done with undergrad!

Gap years after high school are definitely great to grow before furthering education.
Also community college is great! I've gotten degrees from a local state school, community college, and am working on one from a "prestigious" uni and honestly the quality of education is the same. It just depends on which professors you get.

I then decided I don’t want a corporate job one year after graduating and I’m getting a degree in nursing which should only take 18 months. Be kind to yourself. You’re allowed to change your mind. You can still eventually get a masters or phd my saving grace was that in undergrad I was on a full scholarship.

What’s it like going to an hbcu at 22? I’ll be finishing my associate degree at that age and I’d like to transfer to one but I fear I’ll be “too old” since I’ll graduate at 24-25

    • @ii954
      @ii954 Рік тому +5

@@PamBeesly9545 your never too old for college and especially at an HBCU there’s students there from 24-27 and I met one lady in her 30s. One shocking thing is that a lot of people have kid’s already, like 18-19 years old but still not married.
I’ll say about HBCUs it is nice to have the experience of being surrounded by black culture BUT with that comes both good and bad experiences. On TV we usually see the best parts of black culture in HBCUs like: a sense of community, there’s no need to code switch, and a chance to meet other black people the same age. BUT With that: The schools are usually in “the hood” so there is things like homophobia, judgement between black folks, and drug use.
Overall it is I guess worth it, cause when I did go to a PWI I assumed the grass was greener on the other side so I had to see it for myself. But I would definitely say it’s important to find genuine people (all skin folk ain’t kin folk) that have good intentions. And to enjoy the experience for what it can offer. But it’s actually better to go when your a little older like we are because with all of the I guess hood culture there it’s very easy for someone who is younger and naïve to get caught in the wrong crowd.

The timing is mad, I’m turning 23 in Feb, I’ve also been thinking about returning to school cause I ALSO dropped out at 19 because of the stress, overwhelming emotions, shit friends/poor examples I surrounded myself around etcccc. But yea, I think I wanna return for Business Admin focusing on entrepreneurship & marketing. I wanna be self sustained but I NEED HELP, I crave mentorship & deeper learning. I’m not a fan of academia… but I’m pro education so I think I’m finally at a place where I can actually handle school because it feels like I chose it this time vs feeling swept into it by familial & societal pressures and expectations. I wish I took a gap year or 2 fresh outta HS to find myself and become more established in myself but I believe this all happens for reasons we may not understand until it makes sense. I think you were my sign sent from the universe to be serious about looking for classes at my local community college I’ve been eyeing🙈. I don't want to go into grad school because I am also in debt (student debt) and I just don't think it's worth it right now so I'm taking some time off because I need clarity before also investing and making the wrong decision or making the wrong plan. You and I's experience is extremely similar. Went to a competitive predominantly white high school, made a lot of decisions based on societal pressures and ultimately ended up burning out. Which caused me to flunk my classes and lose my scholarship. I left college after 1 year in Spring of 2021, this past fall I have start school again at a community college in a degree program I actually like, not what might be the most lucrative, but because I actually like it and it is so freeing and I am so much more willing to keep up with my work. Taking that time for myself has been so eye opening and ultimately what I needed and I am still in that time of taking classes focusing on myself. I honestly wish I would have taken a gap year. Congrats on starting classes again! Learn a lot, stay focused and keep on working on you while also getting that degree

So many people on youtube are saying that there's just the same or better information on youtube and they don't need to go to university. And I think this is a perspective from people who have not gone to university and do not understand ALL the different benefits/difficulties of education that is different from self-guided study. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Also, people act as if you have to stop being self-guided once you go to university or that you wont still have youtube or other sources to follow up on your interests.

Yes! I had to focus one step at a time. When I was 19 I almost dropped out but I was privileged enough to have a partner support me financially. I received a bachelors of fine arts in December. I’m beginning to figure out that selling art is just as hard being on the spectrum as a full time regular job. I’m now exploring more options such as being in a library! I’m looking forward to seeing how it goes.

I am at community college aswell! I graduated from highschool 6 months early to take a break from school and really think about what I wanted to do. Since I did dual enrollment I already had college credits so I am back in school for my AA so I can complete those credits and get some basic education in if I ever decided to go for my BA!! I Started watching Kai when she started college, so it's cool to be going to school at the same time as her.

I'm 32 and working on my master's degree. This educational journey has been....a process. I went to college at 19 (after taking a gap year) and was there for two years and then took an extended break and traveled because I had no idea why I was in school. When I came back, I transferred to a community college and earned my associates. Got my bachelor's degree in 2016 and went back for my master's degree last year. All that to say, this shit is truly unpredictable and the journey will almost never look how you think it will. But honestly? I'm very glad I did it the way I did. For us neurospicy kids, we need to feel connected to the thing for us to feel compelled enough to see it through. Happy you're figuring it out Kai and congrats to you!

Any tips for budgeting and getting money to go and travel during breaks? Sometimes I think too much about debt and don't really want to allocate money for stuff like traveling while I'm getting my degree... but I feel like traveling allows you to discover things you don't know about yourself.

If you want to work in film for a studio, as someone who majored in animation and kind of has some experience with it, I would very strongly recommend working as a production assistant for a personal assistant to the director. These are entry level jobs, no schooling is required, and the film industry really is who you know over everything, so use those jobs as an opportunity to get to know and make your name relevant to as many people as possible. Doing that while you're in school would be a great combo if you can manage it. If you want to work independently that's a whole other piece but for studios that's what I advise

Thats what basically what happened to me aswell. I dropped out off uni after 2 years july 2021. It was probably hardest decision to make, bc of family pressures and the fact that i had spent so much time and energy working towards my degree, and had planed my future ahead in education so excessively. But at the end of the day i knew that i wasn't really passionate about the degree i was getting + i wanted to enjoy my life bit more (not only spend my time studying and drinking). I just turned 22 and def want to get back in education if not this year then next... But at least i know this time I'll be going into education with a more self centred attitude and mindset than i did when i was 18...
Im very happy im not alone in this and all the gurlies who can relate to this, we can do this!! ✨

4:08-4:40 i feel like I am going through this, and people will say ground yourself in the present, but it is really easier said than done. I do not know how to, I do not know where to start. There is so much pressure attached to our futures as young adults to the point where I feel like I cannot rest, until I am weighed down by the worries and fears that forcefully leave me paralyzed in a constant state of laziness. I hate it. I wish young adults were given the opportunity to figure it out with no strings attached.

I’m going to be 23 in June and I Went to Tuskegee university in 2018 and left, I also worked at AMC and now I just applied to Dillard to get back in school for Film. I felt where you were coming from the whole time and I do feel as though I didn’t have things figured out at 18 and I still don’t have it all figured out now, but I know where I wanna be and I know what I have to do to get there and it’s okay to enjoy the little things on the way to success! We are still young and have so much to accomplish and so much world to see and people to meet and I hope one day we encounter each and see how far we’ve come! I wish you all success and happiness ☀️✨

The #1 lesson to learn and really take in for life is that it's unpredictable. You have to learn as life comes along and look for answers day to day. When I graduated from high school my grades were terrible. I went back to college at 25 years old to a community college, then got accepted to MIT and graduated with a CS degree.

6:39 that’s so true about losing your passion for what you love especially for creatives. I always wanted to do either computer science or dance and because I love dance so much plus everyone was fighting it out; I chose to do a dance as my first degree because I was also afraid of starting CS and stop being because it was too hard.
When I got to year 3 last year I was so close to dropping out because I lost my love for dance; initially because my major is in education and not performance which was what I wanted to do but because everyone said education is a sure career🙄
Now I’m about to finish my final year and sometimes I still question why am I still here doing this.
