It casts good and it is easy to pick those bird nests. 0.10mm X8 cheap braid seems to be ok. Haven't had any line digging in. I also used 50cm fluorocarbon 0.18mm leader with FG knot. After easily picked first hundred nests I am actually getting the hang of it. Currently I am only managing backhand and side casting. But it is a huge step. Nest became rare. Even caught 7 perch. Awesome tip this should work for mono/fluoro backing for non BFS spools. Except with mono/fluoro don't do the twists. I like this method better than the arbor knot.

Thanks for the tip! I picked up that same reel. I’ll be throwing 1/32 daredevil spoons only. New to Bfs. Targeting trout at lakes. Would you recommend maybe 2-4 lb line all the way through or braid to leader? Thanks for what you do.

Adding too much line will do two things! Add too much weight or make it dispense too much line per rotation. When u can't cast ur lure accurately, that means it's too much weight.
Maybe 1/3rd spool or less If you are trying to achieve max distance for lures under 2.5 grams. Probably even less for lures under 1.75 grams. I spool 1/3rd at 4lb mono and I cast lures around 2.75 and up with this reel normally

Question, im looking for braided line for my new dark wolf ultra. I'm new to bfs, and figuring out what i need is not easy. Am I looking for lighter line, 4lb, or smaller diameter line to be able to cast the smaller lures?
I would use 0.4 or 0.6 gou PE line. Japanese lines are usually very good at reporting diameter since they have to due to regulations. Check out Varivas lines! Dont go by lb rating as many brands doesn't report the correct breaking strength. Usually padded for marketing purposes. Especially in America
Jimbo how many yards of line do you put on the Zephyr spool? Too much line and backlash is much more likely to occur? One more question for you... SLX BFS or Zephyr BFS Which reel do you like better? Thank you. Thank you for advice.
SLX hands down. I may have helped make the Zephyr BFS.. But right now the price of YEN is down... Slx is a steal! I add enough line for what lures I need to throw plus I try to factor in fish running. So often I put 125 0.6 gou line for my UL and L for lures 2 to 3.5 grams.
about 20 to 25% more line than you can cast if you doing braided line to keep weight low. Should be more than enough for a season when adding leader materials.
Depends! But when in doubt... 75, 100, 125 and 150 ft of PE line depending on what I am doing. The lighter the lure, the less Line one need and should have to keep the total spool weight low. So for my 1 gram and below adventures, I do 75 ft. My standard for UL and L is 125 ft. My L to ML can also do 150 ft.
Does this reel cast better (farther) with straight fluoro, or braid to leader? I was thinking about using 6ib fluoro, or 6ib braid. Thanks for the videos and tips

depending on what tape. some folks use electrical tape. saltwater surf casters have done it and I have seen a few UA-cam tutorials and they all use it... but i am telling you that is bad! Some tape have poor adhesives and will come off and go into your reel. I would hate to clean that!
@@baileycoach as stated, you can check the website for line capacities. But I don't think one can utilize more than 50 yards on this reel. You are not going to cast far for small lures anyway.
Depending on line it may a bit. But since I don't over spool, I normally can cast out far as I can and then pull the line out until I hit the end and readjust. Probably happened only a few times only. Zero problems with thicker line
No, this reel is better for 1/16thx jigs plus a plastic. I would suggest 2.5 grams and up and on a L rod rather than UL. It you want a budget reel and rod for bfs for UL, try the Tsurinoya Dragon C602UL rod and Tsurinoya dark wolf ultra with the Roro micro bearings! Can do the 1 gram stuff with little line spooled on
I'd just leave the spool in place without removing it from the frame... thread the tag end of the main line through the line-guide and INTO one of them holes on the spool ....go 2-3 rotations round the spool.... AND then pull out the tag end from the spool hole and tie a Uni Knot . When ready , just pull the Uni knot in snug.... and you're done .... alot faster.... without line twist too This way , you dont need to suffer the grief of removing and then re-seating a tight tolerance frame/spool like the Aldebaran or the Conquest which takes a alot of sweat and wriggling to seat it back just right later
That's not always a good way to do it as some bfs spools are thin and that can result on two things... line being cut or spool being warped. But you know your gears better than me! So as long as you find success and ease with your method then that is all good. Lastly... not all bfs spools have holes.
@@rawrfishing haha read carefully what I wrote.... i never said tie the braid into the holes .... just use the holes to hold and roll over the line first THEN remove it and do your uni knot...same end result as you without removing the spool
Hi mate! Greetings from New Zealand, great video, I just received a Johncoo BFS reel and I was wondering how to spool it up! Do you put a leader on and how long would you normally have it? Many thanks!
It really depends on your fishing style and waters. I throw about a yard on. It also depends on your guides too. If you got small guides and you can't tie a thin connection knot.. you may want shorter leaders and or not use braided line at all and go straight mono/fluoro/copolymer
I’m waiting for mu Zephyr to arrive, does anyone know how much 0.04mm braided line goes on the spool? I’m using Climax u-light iBraid on my spinning reel, and thought that it would be great on baitcasting reel too.
Nice! I'll have to give this a shot and possibly just use it on all my reels moving forward. Do you find this effective for spinning reels too? BTW: I know you mentioned warping the spool, etc. Do you think this is an issue with BFS spools (that have a lot of the holes/cut-outs in them) in general when it comes to using them with braid and potentially landing bigger fish? If targeting larger models of fish, or if there's concern about hooking into an incidentally large one, is it a good idea to go with the solid BFS spools (the ones with no holes/cutouts in them) that may exist? Thinking about picking up a shallow spool for my Revo ALX...
I think it will work for spinning but I never tried as I never owned a shallow spool spinning reel. So I always add backing. Spinning reels use thinner lines so I would be wasting too much if I don't add backing. Yes the thinner and lighter the spools are susceptible to warping. There are bfs reels with thicker spools but of course it won't cast as great for light lures.
What line thickness do you recommend for this reel? I always hear pounds or lbs, but in my country we use the thickness like 0,10 of 0,08. Do you know that?
Sorry I do not on the top if my head. My country uses line rating on what it can handle before warping/breaking. I am sure every brand will give you both line diameter and rating. With that said 4lb mono seems to be a sweet spot for this reel as it have a low chance of line getting into the spool.
I just grabbed my spool of Sufix siege 4lb spool and it says it is .008 inches in diameter! The line almost never goes into the spool, but it can happen with this diameter at very low percentage.
@@rawrfishing that is 0,20 mm. And you can throw small baits with that? On all my rods i fish 0.06mm and 0.08mm that is : 0,0023inch and 0,0031 inch and around 15 pounds. I wanted to buy smaller braid , but i think im gonna buy some bigger then otherwise its gonna stuck betwrrn my spook
I’ve tried 6 lb test P Line flourocarbon and it lodge in between the spool and the reel. Then I read about this problem with cheap Chinese bfs reels on UA-cam and the cure is to use 15 lb braid and can still throw 2 gram lures so going to try that.
Sorry to say this: the sample knots at 2:11 mark is big because you are showing us like 30 lb mono. When using PE Braid for BFS Reel, that wont happen because of how thin the braid you will use (e.g. Varivas PE .6).
I used thicker line so you can see the knot easier on video. It was not used for fishing. Line was removed after this video was done. Yes I usually use 0.6 gou for my UL and L bfs fishing
I also noticed that the line is not even across the spool and a bit bulging in the center. Dont feel comfortable with this. The line should be even and tightly reeled to avoid bird nesting 😢
Have replayed how he ties that knot 2:38 multiple times and still can't follow it. Considering this is a key element on how to spool the reel, you'd think this point would be a lot clearer. For us new anglers, knot tying isn't second nature.
Depends what your goals are. If I am casting 1 gram for my most UL reels. 75 ft. 2 grams 100, 3 grams 125. 4 grams 150. Those are base line and then I factor in fish I am targeting and location as there might be big fish to play. Add additional for fish that runs.
i never tried it with thicker line, but if you spool on thin braided line on a full sized spool, then you probably should add backing. braided line cost too much, which is why shallower spools are the way to go! There are ton of reels (especially the japanese ones) that are shallow spool that isn't bfs. For instance, look at the Tatula models from Daiwa. Ton of small capacity spools but isn't at BFS level. Spool plenty of braided line on those :)
also, if it's in the budget, Lew's has the Pro SP that has a shallow spool designed for skipping and pitching (SP). Got one with a gift card and so far I'm pleased.
I put 10lb yellow Power Pro on my Zephyr. I did the knot that you explained, but noticed even after 3 wraps; the line still slips on the spool. I put a thin strip of electrical tape to hold the line from slipping.
Not that your way isn’t the better way, but if you apply the electrical tape to the braided line, ie. folded onto itself like a flag, instead of the spool you don’t need to worry about the adhesive residue.
That could work! i got hot summers here and i store my stuff in my car and go fishing after work. i think that would definitely melt the residue lol. the water you fish could also have ton of chemical runoff that can get into the tape and help break it down. risks that i wish to avoid. but that is a great tip! I hope if people can find this useful! thanks for sharing!
@@rawrfishing true, with some maintenance some people will use it, for me I think it can be use in saltwater because it has a double shielded SS ball bearing right?? just my opinion, anyway thanks for the info bro!
Awesome! I think most ppl does it as well. But many new folks joining the bfs community and I promised to make a ton of useful content for everyone. Let me know if there are anything you would like me to make for any beginners;)
i was confused when i started to learn baitcaster. i cant threw micro lure because i use regular deep spol reel. maybe you could make a video about bfs takle setup if you have not make it yet.
Because it keeps the total weight of the spool light so that you can achieve the best casting experience for light lures for both distance and accuracy. That said, i think you missed the point of bfs 😜
Braid is far superior when it comes to weight, casting distance, accuracy, strength to diameter ratio, it’s low diameter allows for more line capacity, lack of spool memory and overall better line manageability. The real question is, based on that, why wouldn’t you use it? If the answer is you don’t want to tie braid directly to your baits, tie on a fluorocarbon or mono leader with an FG knot, or mark the braid up with a sharpie.
For those interested beginners...

depending on what tape. some folks use electrical tape. saltwater surf casters have done it and I have seen a few UA-cam tutorials and they all use it... but i am telling you that is bad! Some tape have poor adhesives and will come off and go into your reel. I would hate to clean that!
@@rawrfishing thanks for the reply Jimmy. Will stop using tape then. I usually do an arbor knot with one half hitch on each side of the spool
No problem! how does your version work compared to this?
How much 6 lb braid line should I expect to put on this reel??
Measurements in feet, yards or meters??
A lot... They said 110 yards for 8lb braid on their website. You can find more details on their website
@@rawrfishing would 100 yds of 10 lb work safely to spool on this reel??
@@baileycoach as stated, you can check the website for line capacities. But I don't think one can utilize more than 50 yards on this reel. You are not going to cast far for small lures anyway.
@@rawrfishing thank you for your sound advice.
Why didnt you put the knot over one of the holes in the spool? Then it gets pushed into the hole instead of creating a lump in your line lay.
Thin line here so it is virtually not there but I do that too. Just Left it off the video... ooops!
Would the line slip if the spool gets wet?
Depending on line it may a bit. But since I don't over spool, I normally can cast out far as I can and then pull the line out until I hit the end and readjust. Probably happened only a few times only. Zero problems with thicker line
Is the kastking zephyr good for 1/32 ounce lure if i paired it with the correct rod? And do you know a good rot to pair it with? (im on a budget)
Can do the 1 gram stuff with little line spooled on
@@rawrfishing Thanks man
Dude awesome video
Thx mate i appreciate it! 👍👍
I'd just leave the spool in place without removing it from the frame... thread the tag end of the main line through the line-guide and INTO one of them holes on the spool ....go 2-3 rotations round the spool.... AND then pull out the tag end from the spool hole and tie a Uni Knot . When ready , just pull the Uni knot in snug.... and you're done .... alot faster.... without line twist too
This way , you dont need to suffer the grief of removing and then re-seating a tight tolerance frame/spool like the Aldebaran or the Conquest which takes a alot of sweat and wriggling to seat it back just right later
@@en8718 "into one of them holes on the spool"
@@rawrfishing "...AND then pull out the tag end from the spool hole..." never mind lol
@@en8718 that's still bad because the force will be distributed at the hole area of that spool and also line can rub on it to cut.
Jimbo what knot do you think I should use for some 10lbs braid to 6lbs fluoro? Keep up up the good work mah brother..
If u got micro guides, fg knot! Else you got ton of knots to play with! Slim beauty is nice
And thx for the love!
Definitely micro. Awesome. Just got two zephyr clicker models, absolutely stunning I have to say. 🙏 stay blessed jimbo..
@@karannaipaul157 sweet! enjoy the reels!
@@rawrfishing Thx brother. I ordered a Rosewood UL rod, so we will see how it goes.
Nice tip, man!! Love it!
Glad you like it ^_^
I’m waiting for mu Zephyr to arrive, does anyone know how much 0.04mm braided line goes on the spool? I’m using Climax u-light iBraid on my spinning reel, and thought that it would be great on baitcasting reel too.
It should hold a lot, but depending on your application.. Do you need more than 100 ft? I certainly do not when fishing UL
@@rawrfishing 100ft should be enough.
@@NakkiJuustus you will find that there will be plenty of room for more than 100 ft of thin 0.04mm line!
Man that worked out great..thank you.
Nice! Enjoy ^_^
Awesome Tip for spooling 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Schooling ppl on spooling is what I do lol
Great tips for everybody jimbo and love the backwards uni and the two kinda half hitches Great job man.
Thx i appreciate it! 👍👍
Do I have to take out my spool?
Yes as portrayed
Great Tip! Thanks!
Glad you have found it useful:)
I’ve used the tiniest bit of sellotape for over 20 years and never had any adhesive problems 😂
Good for u. Not everyone uses the right one
I stop using backing in every type of baitcaster after a Koi almost out spool me. As long as it is tight and X4 or X3 braid it is good to go
Lol them Kois are beasts!
@@geertwilders5566 yes, you can reference my cast testing videos or my plain fishing vids with the Zephyr to see what I throw
@@pequenioedgarito3067 as stated... Thicker line was used for your video consumption sakes
What kind of line is this please
Don't remember... But it was not for bfs. I used thicker line for sakes of having it visible when showing you how to tie the knot
thanks
Glad u found it useful
Have replayed how he ties that knot 2:38 multiple times and still can't follow it. Considering this is a key element on how to spool the reel, you'd think this point would be a lot clearer. For us new anglers, knot tying isn't second nature.
This is just a specialized uni knot. Feel free to watch a few more times. You can slow down the video if you like using the player! It helps!
How many feet of line do you usually spool up?
Depends what your goals are. If I am casting 1 gram for my most UL reels. 75 ft. 2 grams 100, 3 grams 125. 4 grams 150. Those are base line and then I factor in fish I am targeting and location as there might be big fish to play. Add additional for fish that runs.
Most excellent
thanks i appreciate it :)
This may be a stupid question but does this work with regular baitcasters?
i never tried it with thicker line, but if you spool on thin braided line on a full sized spool, then you probably should add backing. braided line cost too much, which is why shallower spools are the way to go!
@@rawrfishing thanks!
i saw that one. that one you get to tie onto the spool. need it to jack those stuff out of heavy cover :P
I put 10lb yellow Power Pro on my Zephyr. I did the knot that you explained, but noticed even after 3 wraps; the line still slips on the spool. I put a thin strip of electrical tape to hold the line from slipping.
Oh that is interesting
Not that your way isn’t the better way, but if you apply the electrical tape to the braided line, ie. folded onto itself like a flag, instead of the spool you don’t need to worry about the adhesive residue.
That could work! i got hot summers here and i store my stuff in my car and go fishing after work. i think that would definitely melt the residue lol. the water you fish could also have ton of chemical runoff that can get into the tape and help break it down. risks that i wish to avoid. but that is a great tip! I hope if people can find this useful! thanks for sharing!
@@rawrfishing if you’re fanatical like me you can also dip the end of the line in Plasti Dip 24 hours before you spool up 😜
@@briansumma528 ohhhhhhhh snaps! That's epic idea!

@@rawrfishing true, with some maintenance some people will use it, for me I think it can be use in saltwater because it has a double shielded SS ball bearing right?? just my opinion, anyway thanks for the info bro!

@@eriksalipadang7878 I can whip something up to introduce bfs shallow spools and explain it if that is what you are looking for :)

Yes?
While this is a great tip for spooling line I think you're totally missing the whole point of bfs. Why would ever even use braid for bfs?
