The diffuser covering the led became brittle and crumbled under south florida sun, along with led itself stopped working tracing it back to another post's comment where the break was under the awning material from multiple retractions and exposure to heat. Looking to make the project in attaching one to the side of the rv itself.
Well, I just bought a travel trailer with this style led lighting in the tube from Carefree and can honestly say I am impressed by the ingenuity of the person who came up with a relatively simple solution to the issue of getting the electric to the led strip. However, in practice this setup is garbage. I had worked in the awning industry for over two decades and also worked for a textile supplier as well as with nearly every retractable manufacturer out there and this idea, as cool as it is when new, is just not durable enough for the long haul. The previous post is correct, the wire is sewn into the hem which creates rolling issues for the awning and durability issues for the wire. If someone rolls the awning back the wrong way, it is possible to damage the wires at the wall of the camper. Also, camper awnings take a beating are subjected to constant sun & moisture / water, so inevitably this system will fail, most likely like mine within the first few years. In my experience, if someone asked me to do this, I would think it novel and do it for the fun of it, but if I were asked to make this a "production" item, I would walk away as it leaves customers with a bad impression in the long run as there is no possible way to make this a more durable, high quality install, enjoy it while it lasts. I plan to rip this system out keeping only the wire hanging through the wall where I am going to add a waterproof connector to plug in lights that can be mounted directly onto the wall. (also at a fraction of the cost of replacement of the original system) Funny thing is, I tried to contact Carefree via email. and no matter what you do it always finds a way to reject your submission. You are truly on your own~
Oh and to add to the awning arm issue we had, the LED strip has a short. I build location beacons on a SMT line, I know electronics very well. I tested at the RV and at the Roller. The LEDs will light sometimes and the short is located in the wire that runs INSIDE the edge of the awning fabric edge. How is this a good idea and serviceable part?
