    At last somebody mentions Sun Goddess . Got EW&F and the original by Ramsey Lewis . Play it at least once a week ,have done since 1974 ! Sax is something else . The two Film soundtracks from Ike Hayes you were thinking about was probably Truck Turner and the other Tough Guys . Great show and interesting commentary . Thank you .

    • @retromusings
      @retromusings  7 місяців тому

      Fantastic to know there are fans out there of that song. And yes, that sax solo in the song is out of this world. I love the start of the song with the guitar intro. I think the music to film "Tough Guys" has alays been overshadowed by the success of "Shaft". Many thanks for stopping by and watching.

    Such a fantastic video. Great to see all these soul artists get some attention. I would love to see a box set of The Isley Brothers or the Ohio Players. They both produced some great slow soul jams. You have great deep Soul taste.

    Such a cool video. Your deep Soul dive for this tag highlighted some fantastic soul artists and bands that don't get the attention they deserve. That LeRoy Hutson record is just awesome. And you are on -point about Ruffin's falsetto. You really know your Soul. I hardly see anyone ever mentioning Betty Wright, Teena Marie, Phyllis Hyman and Michael Henderson. Your passion for The Spinners is just awesome.

    • @retromusings
      @retromusings  9 місяців тому

      Glad you enjoyed it! I wanted to stay away from the obvious choices for soul and dig deeper featuring lesser known soul artists by today's standards. Happy you agree about David Ruffin. Thanks so much for watching.

    I saw Junior Walker & the Allstars several times at the Club Blue Note in Toronto in the 80s .
    They were excellent , and at the end of his show , he would bring on his teenage son , who would do a couple of Michael Jackson songs with the band . His son did a great job on those songs . Thank you for giving him a shout out .

    No discussion about soul music would be complete without mentioning the truly great Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, James Brown, Sam Cooke, The Soul Stirrers, Otis Redding, and Marvin Gaye. 😻😻😻For great blue eyed soul, I'd throw in The Righteous Brothers and The Rascals.😻 One of The Rascals' most overlooked and highly recommended albums is Peaceful World; it's a very nice blend of jazz, soul, and funk. 👍👍👍 Of all of the many great artists you mentioned, the one that grabbed me the most is Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Now that woman had soul and was such a talented and pioneering singer, songwriter, and guitarist. 😻 Not too long ago, they put out some previously unreleased live music from Sister Rosetta in 1960 on vinyl. It's really good and is still in print. 👍👍👍

    • @retromusings
      @retromusings  9 місяців тому +1

      Couldn't agree more. They are certainly the soul superstars! The Righteous Bros and The Rascals are excellent "blue eyed" soul artists too. Thanks for all the info about Tharpe. She's incredible! Some of her records have been re-issued too. As ever, many thanks for stopping by and watching.

    I really like Square Biz by Teena Marie who was initially on Motown. Love ❤️ Sade & her smooth grooves. The Sweetest Taboo always rocked my world. AWB had a Top 10 hit with an instrumental which was rare. Good players.

      That's a great TM song too. "Portuguese Love" is another favourite of mine. And Sade is just amazing isn't she? In my mind, I usually put AWB, Tower of Power and Brass Construction in the same category as they all have amazing horn sections. Many thanks for stopping by and watching.

    Great, Great response. Never knew Heatwave was not an American group. Totally agree with you on that Spinners album. Been meaning to get that mofi pressing of that one, but haven't stumbled across it yet. Betty Wright, EWF, Teddy P.....all fantastic!!

      That debut Spinners lp on the Atlantic label is crazy good. CG Cameron left the group when they were with the Motown label. The debut Atlantic record showcases Philippe Wynn for the first time. He and Bobby Smith really created magic with their lead vocals. For some reason, I mistakenly said the "It's a Shame" song but actually meant to say "I'll Be Around" for that album. Glad you liked the tag picks. Many thanks for stopping by and watching.

    Heatwave sound interesting, I'll have to check them out. Also, Phyllis Hyman is new to me too, another one to look into. A great anecdote about Junior Walker and Forginer! Dennis Brown is a great choice. Ohhhhh ... I've been looking for a copy of "Summer of Soul". I always pick up a cheap K-Tel record when I see it. :)

    I still love Sade's "Your Love is King" from Diamond Life....and sometime have a listen to "In Another Time" Soldier of Love album; but I digress....
    It's great you have Isaac Hayes representing STAX, because we could spend an hour on STAX with Booker-T, Otis, Eddie Floyd, Staples, etc....before moving to MOTOWN with The Four Tops, Temptations, and Marvin Gaye.

    It made me smile when you said about assuming that those artists were American. My wife is from the US and she was just the same when I first met her. I remember her surprise when I listed many of the stars that she listened to and told her they were actually English. People like George Michael, Elton John, Sting... She didn't actually believe me at first. You've got a lot of great Soul records. Growing up in my neighborhood, Soul music was not appreciated, so I came quite late to it. James Griffiths opened my eyes and ears to it only a few years ago. I'd like to join in on this Tag but I doubt I could answer most of the questions. Lovely video!

    Hello, RM. On the Spinners LP: is the "It's a Shame" track a remake of their original Motown hit, or a different song with the same name? I have the "Diamond Life," "Stronger than Pride," and "Promise" Sade LPs, and remember them well. I have "You Know How to Love Me" also; I saw Ms. Hyman at Fat Tuesday's in New York a long time ago. Thanks for the background on the "Urgent" track, too; I knew Jr. Walker did the solo, but not how it came to be. I discovered recently that Rod Temperton was English, but it wasn't a big surprise; I didn't know that listening to "Thriller." I was pleasantly surprised to see how many of the LPs you showed that we have in common. No wonder I subscribed to this channel 😁!

      Hi. My bad- for some reason, I said "It's a Shame" but meant to say "I'll Be Around" for that record. As you rightly noted, "It's A Shame" was on an earlier record under the Motown label. The lead singer for that song was CG Cameron. He left The Spinners by the time the group signed on with the Atlantic record label. As ever, many thanks for stopping by and watching.

    Damn. Yep, "Walk Away From Love" is absolutely a banger. Great choice! Also, glad you mentioned that General Johnson song. I do have that LP, but have only listened to it once. You've inspired another listen!
    Loved the video, glad I saw it before I did this tag myself! Some of those are pretty, pretty tricky, but I should have mine out next week!
    Keep on keepin' on, RM! 😁

      The soul genre is just so vast and there are so many amazing artists. I purposely stayed away from picking the obvious soul superstars for the tag and wanted to highlight the lesser known ones. Look forward to seeing your tag! Many thanks for stopping by.

    I'm a total square here. Will some of you hep cats fill me in the on the meaning of 'Tag".

      The "tag" is usually done at the start of the new year. Someone comes up with a bunch of questions and they answer them. They encourage others to answer the same questions and post their videos too. They all need to "tag" or mention the original person who created the "tag". It becomes a bit of a chain video theme. Bunch of people answering the same questions. I think it's been going around for the past 2-3 years. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for stopping by.
