    I was impressed that you know where to place the candle plate relative to the inverted pot. Most videos show up to 3 inches of separation and that makes for very low thermal output -- your 1 inch or so gap is exactly right.

    I think you have it right when you said in one of the comments that it is more that it is nice to be able to warm up your hands. Otherwise, the science is out there that these don't work to really heat up a room in any meaningful way. But great video as always!

    • @christofix
      @christofix  4 роки тому +2

      You are correct, you will never heat up a room until you can wallk around in shirt. But that was not the ide behind my test. I just wanted to raise the temperature a litle bit and have something to warm my hands on, like you mentioned. Thanks for watching my friend

    I made this. I used a 3" pot, a 5" and a 7". Two 10" plates and a 5" plate. 1/2- 13 rod and nuts. The biggest plate I used for the base. The second 10" plate for holding the candles and the 5" plate on the top. I had to put side holes under the small plate and the 7" pot and 4 holes in the top for heat/exhaust escape. I can put up to 10 tea lights in at one time. This will keep a 8' x 15' room at between 60 and 65 when the temp outside is below freezing and maintain this for 5 to 6 hours. Then have to reload fresh tea lights. Granted, my shed is pretty well insulated but my only heat is from my Terra Cotta heater. this is not a fast heat, but a slow radiating heat. You do have to set you air level and pay attention to it once and a while. You can get flash over if you have spilled wax being heated from the holding plate. If you use a wingnut under the holding plate you can adjust you air gap you control the burn. I get roughly between 6 to 7 hours from 8 to 10 candles. I'm sitting next to it right now and i have to be about 1' away or it gets too warm on my leg. This is in Minnesota this year and will be my major source of heat for this coming winter. I use two of the old used tins and put that scented wax on the top plate for better smelling room. Don't put the wax directly on the plate. !! The wax will absorb into the Terra Cotta, But once the clay has absorbed all it can you don't have the same fear of off gassing to ignite

    😳 WoW! I like the design and concept...
    It looks good, it is silent, could smell amazing and it works . Even without any paint it looks decorative.
    Mathematically, about 40 watts per candle, say 160 watts per 4.
    A maximum standard outlet space heater is rated 1500 watts.
    So your setup will take 9 hours to heat the same as a "powerful" space heater for one hour. Which is amazing since your setup is slowly releasing heat, and can be in a much closer proximity to human which give a cosy warm feeling.
    One note though, I think you mean in your cost calculation
    0.03 "Dollars/Euros" not "cents" for the price of Ikea candles

    Would be interesting to see the Temperature change after 4 Hours with only the Candles and not yourself being in the shop at same Outside Weather conditions. So my Question is: how much did the heat of your Body/breathing warm the Shop up. There are so many more Factors going in this, than only the Candles....that's at least my guess :)

    • @christofix
      @christofix  4 роки тому +13

      It will certainly have an effect that I am present there, but there will never be a moment when I will leave a burning candle unguarded. For me, the biggest advantage is that there is a heat source that I can regularly warm my hands to, warm hands works much easier. All the extra temperature that is released only makes it more pleasant in my workplace. Thanks for watching and this really good question my friend.

      Actually it would have been nice to have the base line test done first with just him in his shop the day before and all the same measurements. That way we can see how much his ~100W of body energy heats the place alone versus when the candle heater is running.

    You start the "test" at 7:57am and conclude at 11:03am.
    Did you ever stop to consider that temps normally rise from morning to noon???
    A rising sun is also pretty good at warming things up.

    • @christofix
      @christofix  3 роки тому

      Hi Daniel, that is a very good comment. It was a cloudy day that day, so I suspect that will have almost no effect on the temperature. But I totally agree that had the test happened on a day when there would be a big difference in temperature between morning and noon, that would have affected the temperature inside. Thank you for watching and your comment.

    • @patandderry8416
      @patandderry8416 3 роки тому +2

      @@christofix You are a dunce. The day will still heat up with clouds. Clouds don't reflect all of the heat of the sun. Just some of it.
      There is simply ZERO difference between heating your room with candles and heating your room with candles with a pot over them. All the pot does is heat up and give you the impression that it is heating your room. But the candles put out the same amount of heat. Not enough to heat your room by 1'C let along 5'C
      Pick up a physics book rather than making videos that help keep stupid people stupid.

      @@patandderry8416 There is no need for being rude... A flame is a flame is a flame and will generate only so many BTU.. The terra cotta pots act like a heat sink absorbing the heat... so no,... they won't change the effectiveness of a set of candles burning... but burning candles do create BTUs..If you don't believe me hold your hand over a flame ..... and get back to me..
      Now there is a method of accelerating the dissipation of the stored heat by using a powered ventilation across the hot clay cooling it faster, thus warming the surrounding air better.. so technically.. if enough candles are aflame... yes they can heat the workshop

      @@patandderry8416 And you are an idiot! Convection, induction, radiation. Without the pot cover the heat goes straight up and will warm one spot above your head! The pots RADIATE the heat and disperse the heat more efficiently. Put a small fan to it and it works even better. This was demonstrated when I needed to season a cast iron skillet on a gas stove burner. Placed it upside down on a burner, set the flame to low. Went about my business an forgot about the skill. Next thing I know, the living room and kitchen are frickin' hot! Run that same burner with nothing on it and the heat just flow up through the stove hood/vent. Same heat being produced, yet vastly different ambient temperature results!

    interesting but temps do generally increase anyway with the sun rising during this timeframe.. would be interesting to repeat this during the evening, and perhaps during the night for a more accurate test. Generally interested though, as could be a great money saver.. wondered if the pots were painted a certain colour better results could be achieved?

      The temperature will indeed rise due to the sun, but that day was a pretty stable day with no sun and almost no difference in temperature during the day. So the impact of the sun was minimal. The idea of painting the pots is interesting. I have no idea if this would influence the temperature. Maybe I will test this later. Thanks for watching. Greetings

      My workshop has the size of a one-car garage, so that will be 3 by 6 meters or so. I do think it matters if the heater is hanging or not. The reason I choose to hang it was that there is no contact with another object so heat would not be absorbed. Thank you for watching, my friend. Greetings.

I saw the holes drilled into the bottom of the larger pot to improve air flow (convection) but using more candles creates more heat "stored" and a passive dissipation system may not be enough... Maybe a detachable ventilation system could be utilized to switch back and forth between multiple heating plants

    30 Watt per candle. You need to burn 50 to equal a 1500 watt space heater output. Tea Candles burn for about 3.5 to 4 hours. You can buy about 200 for 25 bucks on amazon. This gives you the 4 x 4 hour sessions so 16 hours. That means you will spend 25 dollars to heat a room with the equivalent of a 1500 watt space heater for 16 hours. Also each candle uses as much oxygen as 1.5 people. So burning the 50 candles will use up as much oxygen as 75 people in the room. So you will have to open the windows and ensure you have a good ventilation, thereby negating any heat gained.
    Burning Candles to heat a room is much more expensive and much less efficient. I would consider this only a real emergency solution to create a small space to warm your hands.

    I wonder what the same temp changes would be without you in the shop? Average human produces 6-10k btu heat per day so at four hours on the low side your body produced 1k btu heat. I’m genuinely curious. 🤓 My workshop is not insulated well enough for this type heater. I use propane space heaters but they are still inadequate. I need to insulate more and get a large 20k btu heater with a thermostat to keep it above freezing overnight for my glue and finishes. Until then, I use my diy automatic heated glue cabinet I built. Great video cinematography!

      Some people made a similar comment. the fact that I am present in the workshop will certainly influence the temperature. But what is important to me is that there is a heat source next to me that I can occasionally heat my hands on. All the extra temperature that this heating generates is a nice extra.
      This is a very nice question that would make me want to know what heat this heater actually produces, but I will never leave a candle unattended for 4 hours. That is why I am not going to take the risk of testing this out. I love my workshop to much LOL. Thank you for watching and your comment my friend.

    A tea light candle produces 100 BTU's of heat energy. This video shows 4 tea lights were used so 400 BTU's generated. Depending where you live it takes 30 to 60 BTU's per square foot to heat a room with an average height ceiling. So lets use a living room that's 15' x 15' = 225 sq. ft. x say 40 BTU's = 9,000 BTU's required to heat. Remember a candle that generates 100 BTU's does not magically generate more BTU's if you cover it with a clay pot so this video falls into the "Free Energy" or "Perpetual Motion" device category.

      I think you're missing some data. How hot is the flame? How close is the flame to the pot? How many flames? What temp do the flames heat the pot to?
      Also there are different setups to the device. Some have an open hole at the top creating an upward "jet" of heat that pulls cooler air into the bottom. Whats the temp of that "jet"? I've seen videos that put it at 170f. How long does it take to warm up a room of a certain size with a constant jet of 170f air being introduced?
      It will not "heat" a room I wouldn't think... but it can and does slow the cooling and no doubt should lower energy bill.

      It will certainly have an effect that I am present there, but if these candles burn I will always be there. there will never be a moment when I will leave a burning candle unguarded. Is het sowieso om 11 uur 's ochtends niet warmer dan om 8uur 's ochtends?

    • @christofix
      @christofix  2 роки тому

      Hoi. Die dag waren er weinig schommelingen in de temperatuur. Uiteraard zal 's middags iets warmer geweest zijn dan 's morgens, maar niet in die verhouding als de gemeten temperatuur. Wat achteraf gezien ook wel een verschil zal gemaakt hebben is dat ik daar ook nog rondliep. Maar de kaarsen zullen uiteindelijk wel het grootste deel van deze temperatuurverandering op zich genomen hebben.
      Bedankt voor het kijken en om me een berichtje na te laten.

    It would be hotter if you used more nuts and washers inside the second pot, and obviously if you had a second one. I think it depends what size you’re heating

    What if you put a thick metal chain called Reese Tow Power or a Safety Chain in a tea light pots will it work just as good. You flip the clay pot upside down so the metal chain goes in the pot. They say the more metal more heat ??

And maybe wheel locks from Eminem You Pull It or some type of junk yard. I think you could get the wheel locks for free

      @@christofix ok cool. And what I do is use clean empty metal cans of fruits and vegetables to put the candles in. I'm going to Walmart and the Home Depot store to figure out the biggest sizes of clay pots. To put 1 smaller one in the bigger 1. Then put the chains or wheel locks in them.

    I have tried it. 110° is not hot enough to heat a room. I made one using a metal coffee can. It gets over 350°. That will burn you, but it heats the room.

    The double-pot just insulates the outer pot from the inner. Get rid of the inner pot.

    People try to disprove this in videos using math, but they make the mistake of using the candle power of 40 watts per tealight. If you light a tealight in your home, the heat rises to the ceiling. These pots convert it to radiant energy and keep the heat lower. Also, other videos have people trying them out in vehicles. A vehicle has no insulation to help stop heat loss.

    The funny thing is, we never experience 5° 10 Degree in our country. so the question is, can this heat up from 15° Degree to up.

    • @christofix
      @christofix  2 роки тому

      That is a good question. I'm sure it will heat, but I don't know how much you will be able to raise the temperature like that. I Guess the only way to know for sure is to try it. Have a great day, my friend.

  • @tonyvu60

    No, you can’t heat any room with 4 candles. Even 5, 10 candles. You will burn off the oxygen before it warms anything. it is all about the space. Room size includes height. Using the clay pots only to trap the heat from going up the ceiling, and keep you warm within 15, 20 sq feet around it. Any room bigger than that, or higher than 8 ft in height will not do any good. Please don’t tell me “try it first” because I have. I put together an experiment in a 10x12 room with 10’ ceiling. With the door closed, It raised my room temperature by a measly 2 degrees. Imagine a room at 50 degrees in the winter, 2 degrees will still freeze your *#@$*#&.

    Be very careful if you make one of these. As the temperature inside increases, the wax melts. If it stops there, you are OK. If it gets even hotter at some temperature, the wax will start to boil. If that happens you are i a lot of trouble. Boiling wax makes a fire very like a gasoline fire. The hotter it gets the more the wax boils so it gets hotter again and so on.
