  • On today’s special offseason report of Top Lyne Winnipeg Jets, Nik and Brady are here breaking down the trade of Rutger McGroaty for Breydan Yager and how that can impact the teams outlook this year and next. Then the boys try and decode Kevin Cheveldayoff's strange press conference and if this situation could be signalling the start of a real youth movement in Winnipeg? Did the Jets do enough on this trade? Is it really a "better Yager than never" situation? Let’s talk about it.

Hey Nik and Brady, that was an awesome show!!
Lots of thoughts on the trade of McGroarty for Yager and I agreed with pretty much everything that is being said. I think Yager will surprise us and I watched a bunch of his highlights, noting that he can position himself interchangeably between left and right, as well as centre. I didn't see one position being especially strong, which could be a unique quality. He is also a faster skater and I'm wondering if at some point he centres Nik and possibly Brad. But alternately, I'd also like to see a sample size of Vilardi on centre, the chemistry he and Nik had was noticeable and I think it should have been given more of a chance to develop last season.
I see the Jets being competitive this coming season for sure, and there is some uncertainty as we haven't had a big sample size of the kids waiting to come up to the team. Wondering what you think of the thought of giving 10 games to every up-and-comer, and the only way they go back down is if their sample size results are dismal. Otherwise they stay up. We got a bunch of new players for the Moose over the summer so that should be fine if some of the top guys stay with Jets. I know Brayden will have to stay at WHL or at NHL level so his path will look a bit different than our Moose players.
Going to be a fun year and I've invested in 1/4 seasons, with the driving involved that was all I could do for the upcoming season.
Thanks Nik and Brady, keep up the good work. :)

      Thank you as always Phyllis!
Love the time you take to share and express your thoughts! Hard to argue with any of them as well! Some fun and exciting things coming in Winnipeg!
Agreed they can be competitive this year, really interested to see how much with some of that uncertainty!
Love to hear you’re going to a 1/4!

Great show. I feel like the Jets could’ve given Rutger everything he wanted and he was still going to take the first bus out of town anyways. But, ya, I wish the Jets weren’t so stingy with getting their prospects into the line up. I also wish Veil was still in the system. That one hurt.

Thank you CP, and thanks for sharing your takes!
Agreed, I don’t think Rutger had much to do with playing time and used the spot as leverage, but definitely an area the Jets need to push abit harder on

Definitely like the trade from a positional scarcity and having multiple chances at developing a centre. Interesting they arrived at the best course of action incoroporating youth and not comitting to any bad long term contracts by accident. I am tired of hearing people bring up last years top 4 regular season finish like it was an accomplishment and something to build on, teams generally dont place much value on playoff position. This team won with depth, goaltending and because teams don't care about playing a random game against the Jets in January. This team doesn't have the talent to make a deep run unless the young players step up. I would definitely be fine with taking a step back if it means getting experience for the young players. The sooner you get them acclimated into the NHL game and routine the sooner you begin to see them becoming contributers. If you can move 2 or 3 players into key roles along with Pionk and Iafflo expiring contracts, and the Wheeler buyout expiring they will be in position to make some key moves. Of course the Kyle Connor contract always looms in the future and I am afraid that has the potential to be a bad contract 2 or 3 years in.

It is funny they landed there by accident, it was pretty evident they wanted to try and run it back. Thankful it didn’t, as I much prefer seeing the youth movement be featured and it’s impossible to ignore at this point
Agreed completely about leaning on the top 4 finish, it’s just not realistic to expect that again. Fully healthy D core all year, Lowry best season since 2017-2018, a stretch of Ehlers top line that tipped the scales for 6 weeks. Unless Arniel surprises, it’s just not feasible to build off of without a massive blockbuster, and the fact Rutger was used for a future tells me that ain’t coming.
Agreed completely on winning on depth, and the differences in their records between the 1/3rds of the league was pretty telling

Kyle Connor next contract has a real chance to break this team for a long, long time……

The first red flag should have been the guy plays forward and CHOOSES to wear #2.
Penguins are also going full rebuild in 2 years. Dubas doesn’t take that job unless he knows he’s got a green light to tear it down at some point.

I gotta say #2 in Michigan’s set up was SICK 🔥

How much does having the Moose in the same small market play into these decisions? The Moose need to sell tickets. And an AHL team is selling the ability to watch prospects.
Let’s remember despite the narrative the Moose are only here because Chipman over played his hand and Thunder Bay wouldn’t build an arena.
I believe that if Chipman could find them a new home he wouldn’t do it in a heartbeat.

I’d guess not as much as we’d think. From what I’ve heard in the situation the Jets only need somewhere between 2-3K fans at moose games to run about even in the ledger, and the costs saved housing them here vs elsewhere wins out for the team
Just a personal theory but I think long term you see Chipman try and bring a PWHL team here, and move the moose somewhere relatively near by
With Salo, Lambert and a few tweener type prospects, moose may be decently watchable next year
I do think they know their bread and butter is NHL, and prioritize it above all else, I just think they’ve (for some reason) really scared themselves off of young guys helping a competitive team despite over half the team in 17/18 being U25

Rudger was barely a ppg player at the world juniors playing on the top line and pp1. At least half the team played better. He skates like he has his skate guards on. not overly physical either. Not impressed. He will be in the ahl by Christmas.

Can’t say I’d use “world junior point totals” as an argument for players success in pro
