  • The following is part 3 of our trip to Disneyland on Saturday, February 8th, 2020. Stay tuned throughout the rest of the week for further installments of our day.
After our time spent with our friends on this Friday evening, I took my leave of the group in order to take care of some Fresh Baked business. And one of those things to do was one my new favorite things. Following the Disney winds! In other words, it's Winds-Day!
I started my trip as I often do, from the the Main Street Train Station for the Disneyland Railroad to help set the scene. And that scene is Disneyland in its last hour. Most everyone is going home for the night, but we're heading back IN. Heading back to capture the essence of Disneyland.

FreshBaked, David. Disneyland After Dark, as Walt alway's said, " It's a new kind of magic." When Tony Baxter and his team re-modelled the Fantasyland facade's they did a brilliant job. The way each building own's it's own "space" and blends seamlessly into the next building is just above and beyond. Only at D/land. Cheers, Chris Perry.

So crazy to think that this version of Fantasyland hasn't been there since opening day because it sure feels like it has. We have great Imagineering to thank for that!

Thank you for your videos. Especially these "follow the winds" episodes. Since I lost my sweetie at the end of January I realize we will never experience Disneyland in this way again. I know she is looking over my shoulder watching the winds change.

I so agree about the Main Street Vehicles at night. My dream is to be able to ride the horse drawn streetcar at night during Christmas while drinking a hot chocolate, but it just isn’t ever gonna happen.

The original Renaissance-style Fantasyland I knew for years and all I remember is is having so much fun in just being there and can say that the essence of The Land was quite the same and continued on after the big face lift. I think because mostly the interiors of Dark Rides were on the whole faithfully carried forth unchanged or slightly improved with better construction materials where needed like the inside of Alice in Wonderland. There was a really tacky Food Court at the far edge which we were glad to see go. The saddest thing was when the Skyway to Tomorrowland through The Matterhorn was removed. That was a unique quiet ride and a bit of a thrill with the precarious high altitude on only the cable. The Magic Shop was there inside The Castle I believe and actually a hot scene with some tripped-out sales people almost like the Jungle Cruise Skippers! I saw Walt Himself ride up one afternoon in The Main Street Fire Engine to personally dedicate the opening of a remodeled area! What a radiant Spirit of Joy he was in his sudden unannounced appearance! I mean like no other person I have ever seen before or since and witnessing the source of all that beauty was a rare gift moment in my life.

When we went to DL in October 2018, there was one evening when grandma took the kids back to the hotel & my husband & I and my 21 year old son & his fiancé got to run around DL. We hung out in an near empty Fantasyland, and it was heaven!

I can never decide whether I prefer the park during the day or at night. There are so many aspects of daytime that I love, but then again, there are so many things I live at night. It almost feels like 2 different parks depending on the time of the day. Of course, the slower pace of the night is always a good sight. I'll have to go just spend the evening there one of these days. Usually when I go, I go for a whole day, but I would love to just show up at 5 or 6 and then close out the park. It's just kind of hard to justify spending like 3 hours stuck in rush-hour traffic when I could leave earlier in the morning and arrive in under an hour

So, If I'm parsing this correctly, this footage comes after you spend Friday with your fellow vloggers, but before the footage you shared about how many rides can a person do in Fantasyland at park close?
@ 01:30 Your totally right David. I have never been to rope drop, and with the way it is now that the Rise effect is in effect, seeing Main Street like this really is a totally different vibe. Its the sort of vibe that would fuel my park commando in my youth, and kind make me see how many fantasyland rides I could get in before park close. *lol*
@ 08:30 Hearing "Bells of Notre Dame" at this point in the clip is really kind of bittersweet. A really nice serendipity to a follow the Winds day. Of course, Esmeralda is not a princess, so I'm not really sure where one would find her for meet n greets?
@ 10:55 A good question, Dave. while maybe not a full anamatronic, no reason there could not be an occasional shadow projection of Peter and Wendy landing on the clock arm, sort of reverse projected using the same projection mapping tech Disney uses to such great effect elsewhere. Maybe the next time Peter goes down for a major refurb? us park lovers can dream...
@ 11:55 More like a circus theme. the striped pavillion/tents, like can still be found on the east coast. No, I will agree with you here that these Facades are a thousand percent better, in my opinion, than the pre-1983(?) fantasyland.
@ 12:30 You ask Disney to build a dark ride today? You get Smugglers Run or Rise of the Resistance, Dave. Both great rides, but not what you are ruminating about at this point in this clip.
@ 13:20 The only reason NOT to concentrate on closing the park is the 'Rise Effect' Rope drop or bust for those boarding passes. Still, what you are showing and describing here are what I considered the best part of my disney day, way back when. Never worried about 'rope drop'; because I knew I'd find these conditions at the end of the operating day.

LOVE!! Oh, how I love those late nights when everyone is heading out of the park, hardly anyone near the castle, quiet little corners everywhere. That side view you had of the castle is one of my favorites, especially at night when you can see the castle's reflection in the water. That's the perfect park/castle picture! That just made me happy sigh! Thanks, David.....that was beautiful. FRESH BAKED!! NSA!

You and I think alike during the slow times. I enjoy sitting on mainstreet just taking it all in and appreciating what I'm looking at. I shoot lots of photos though, so that's probably why I subconsciously like less people around. I miss the days of an empty park at certain times of the year when you didn't have to get off of a ride to ride it again, because there was no line waiting. At the same time, I love the growth though!

  • @larryfontenot9018

The main street vehicles always stopped running before sundown, even back in the old days. I have no idea why, and can't find any information about it.
I don't have to imagine the original theme of Fantasyland -- I lived it. And it lives on in the form of the giant leaves and ride vehicles outside the Alice in Wonderland ride. As plastic as Fantasyland was in those days, there were some things we had that you don't -- the skyway, the Pirate Ship restaurant, and skull rock.
They don't pack Mr. Toad's in that small building. Like many a Disney ride, it covers more territory than is apparent to the eye. Mr. Toad's runs underneath Alice's Adventures, which is why you climb to the second story of the building for that ride.
"I need that music!" I'll respectfully disagree. I thought the part where the music wasn't running on Casey Junior was absolutely wonderful. It was very relaxing.

We LOVE late nights at Disneyland. Especially Adventureland, and the lights in New Oreleans Square along the river. We always try to do the last two Tiki Room shows of the night, if you can get the cast member amped up on the show it's even more fun!
