    great lesson, actually the best I have seen on youtube for this subject.
    when you do "4s":
    do you put more emphasize on the first downstroke ( like playing iit louder, stronger downstroke ...) ? some are teaching this method, because so you know, when you do many 4s one after another (often the same note) , you always know, when a new 4s group starts.
    otherwise it is just a endless row of the same note, without any system. One time you play this part with 20 notes, next you play it with 23 notes ( if
    the song requires 5 x4s).counting your notes a tthe speed is impossible .
    Thanks !

      +DragonBolo Hi, I understand what your saying and I've heard several guitarist reccomend this approach, including Mr Petrucci. However, I would not recommend approaching this thought as being the "correct" way to play tremolo. In genres like metal, especially a lot of modern metal, tremolo is sometimes used to create ambiance to create a base for harmonies and what not. In cases like this you actually *would* want a droney sound without structure instead of a highly structured sound that emphasising the 1st stroke of every beat would give. If your tremolo picking is at the forefront of the song structure, like in some death metal songs, then the more structured approach would make sense. Ultimately its all about what is correct to the ear, not what makes sense while practicing.

    After many years of metal and a few years of playing in a black metal band here are my tips:
    - you need a guitar pick for tremolo picking
    - if you play only once every few months it will take forever to tremolo pick those nothes
    - play in a dark with a light up candle
    - family reunions are a bad time and place for tremolo picking
    - If you want to pick up some chicks with your mad tremolo skills leave an electric guitar and black metal and pick up a mandoline
    - Tremolo picking for us metalheads is what twerking is for female dancers in a pop culture

    Thanks very much for the video. I wanted to ask something and please believe this isn't a criticism but it seems like you are actually picking a BIT with your elbow but predominantly the wrist. Am I off-base on this? Or is the movement I see in your elbow just residual movement from your wrist finding its way to your elbow?

    How should one practice tremolo picking to get faster on the open E string? Will practicing the pattern at 3:10 help improve my tremolo picking overall? I taught myself to tremolo by playing black metal but I've been at the same speed for years.

      Hi. Yes it will. Also, try using a metronome, and also check out Troy Grady's channel. He has some amazing stuff on speed picking, especially pick slanting which I've only just discovered.

    Greetings!
    I have been watching your tutorials AND they área very Very good.
    I am doing a black metal band AND when i was looking for best muy technique i found this video AND my question Is
    Do you pick with the hand in the air? Or do you rest some parte of the hand/wirst on the guitar? Maybe with the same thumb or a finger? I have this doubt.

    How is tremolo picking different from sweep picking and which is better for playing speed metal shreds and why?

    • @Andy-hv7wy
      @Andy-hv7wy 7 років тому +3

      Renaissance Man tremolo is playing the same note very fast, typically on one string.. Sweeping is, as the word implies, is a sort of sweep across three or more strings

      Renaissance Man Tremolo is easier to be faster with, but they both have a different sound to them

    Is it easier to tremolo pick with a thick pick like he uses? or it`s the same with a thin pick?

    • @Aaron-le6xs
      @Aaron-le6xs 5 років тому

      Its much easier to tremelo pick with a thin pick for me, such as 0.7mm (but not too thin where it flexes). Anything thicker than that seems much harder for me
