Let me set the scene for you bc, once again, I live in delusion: ballroom setting. The decor is ostentatious, ornate, and baroque in its finery. A perfect evening for dubious & devious acts to go unnoticed. You are attending with Duke Wriothesley. And although he was invited as an esteemed guest, as the overseer of the Fortress of Meropide, he must uphold justice and order no matter the occasion. Even on a night meant to be spent lavishly. He is not quite so knowledgeable in ballroom behavior so you'll have to excuse him for any lack of particular etiquettes.
(basically he's going to catch bad guys at this ball & you're going to help him.)

I mean... In the whole Fortress of Meropede his office is the only place you can hear classical music and there's a phonograph there so it's very much cannon that Wrio is a big fan of classical music. And he is so iconic for that!! ❤❤
POV: Your bodyguard joins you for a dance
Calloused hands brush your own. They’re warmer, not clad in black lace unlike your own, and they completely engulf your smaller ones. You look at the stranger’s face, and your eyes widen at the handsome visage in front of you. Grey eyes, the hue of the sky after rainfall, stare down at you, a playful smile on the man’s face. Your bodyguard has decided to join the dance floor.
“Wriothesley? What are you doing here?”
“I saw that my lady was getting quite exhausted talking to the other gentleman here, so I decided to keep you company instead.” His voice is light, easygoing, and it makes the fatigue dispel immediately, like sunshine searing through thick, dark, rain clouds.
“Ah, how observant. If only you dedicated the time looking at me to help me with my paperwork.” You tease, and Wriothesley’s hand encircles your waist as you waltz. He guides you, and your feet naturally follow his guide.
“Now, Duchess, that is a bit above my paygrade. I do enjoy watching you do it though.”
“How mean of you, Duke Wriothesley.” You giggle softly. And he hushes you, bringing your head to his chest for a waltz.
“You’re tired, my lady. Let’s dance slowly, save your poor feet.” He leans in, and you realise he’s been drinking a bit of the red wine due to the rosy blush on the tips of his ears and on his cheeks. “I enjoy spending time with you, my lady.”
You blush, not really knowing what to say. You two silently dance for about thirty seconds, but it feels like hours. Your heart thunders before you look up at him and meet his love-softened gaze. “Me too. I like spending time with you too.” You smile softly, and his face breaks out into a childish, toothy smile. It’s the smile you have recognised for years on end as the smile he wears when he wins something. The same smile he gives you when he sneaks desserts into your bedroom for you, or the smile that taints his severe resting face whenever he hears you talk about something you’re passionate about.
“Duchess, forgive my impertinence. May I?” He leans in, slowly, careful not to scare you. Like a careful dog approaching a tiny rabbit, he waits for your response. Heat travels to your cheeks and you lean in, and his soft lips meet yours for a small kiss.
You go red, pulling away but giggling. The sassy attitude hasn’t left you yet, and you say, “My goodness, Wriothesley, you should know better than just throw yourself at a lady.” He looks at you, your lipstick slightly smudged on his lips, his hand hovering just by the small of your back to guide you away from the ballroom before cornering you against a wall, his muscled arm leaning above your head.
“Forgive me, my lady, but it seems that I won’t learn my place unless you put me in it. And from the looks of it, you seem too speechless to do so. So let me indulge, just for a bit.” He whispers breathily, loosening the red tie on his neck and cups your face, closing the gap between you for another, hungry, desperate, yet innocent kiss…

It really is! Like the Phantom of the Opera part I almost passed out, the dialog was so perfect!
POV: a dance with a handsome duke.
the atmosphere in the banquet hall was surprisingly amiable tonight. the usual anxiety and rigidness of such an event was left behind, leaving the area draped in a warm blanket of gentle chatter and the soft clinking of glass. the slight tension in the air had long since melted away, and even the most reluctant of the attendees had left their tables in search of a conversation or dance.
as Y/N's eyes drifted over the warmly lit venue, she sipped conservatively from the glass of wine pinched between her fingers. for once, she didn't feel as though this was an event she attended purely out of obligation. tonight was a night of gentle celebration, and having skipped the earlier festivities of the new year, Y/N thought it wouldn't cause any harm to dedicate a night to wine and engaging in mundane socials. but now that she was here, she found she didn't mind sitting to the side as she allowed the fuzzy warmth of the champagne and the tender lull of the music to relax the permanent set of her shoulders, the stressed furrow to her brow.
as much as she enjoyed her peaceful solitude, she didn't refuse the company that came with the tall, young man crossing the room towards her. with signature unruly black hair and a confidence in his stride, the girl knew instantly who this was. she turned to face him just as he flashed her a handsome, casual smile. as they stood face to face, he took her hand and pressed a gentle, lingering kiss to her knuckles.
"duchess. it's a pleasure to see you." wriothesley's voice was pleasant; a low, velvety drawl. it was strangely pleasant.
"likewise, duke." the duke lifted his head, a boyish grin adorning his sharp features.
"i never expected that you would take the time to attend these events, duchess. perhaps the rumors of your distaste for formal events have been false?" the girl hummed at this, burgundy lips curling at the corners.
"i find i quite enjoy banquets when it fits within my schedule. though, i must return the inquiry; it's rather rare that you're sighted at social events such as these, duke. what brings you here today?"
"well, i merely had a bit of a whim. having said that, would you care to dance, my lady?" the duke held out a gloved hand, grin wide on his face.
the girl laughed mirthfully as she took his hand, stepping with him onto the dance floor as the tingling notes of a new song drifted through the air.
"is this another whim of yours?" the girl's gaze settled on his as she intertwined their fingers, her other hand braced against his shoulder.
"i suppose you could say that." wriothesley just grinned at her as he held her waist, the warmth of his fingertips seeping through the silk of her dress and warming her skin. the two moved in tandem as they glided across the floor, the girl's skirts trailing behind her like wings of dark mist. wriothesley's touch was tender against her body as he guided her across the room, their movements blurring together as their heels clinked lightly against the marbled floor.
as they danced, the other couples in their vicinity stole glances at the duo, unable to tear their eyes form the breathtaking scene. the two floated across the floor in sync, movements light and effortless. the beautiful elegance of Y/N's charcoal silk dress draped over her figure, the fabric weightless and shapeless against the fabric of wriothesley's fitted suit.
as the girl was dropped into a dip, wriothesley pulled her waist flush against his body as he smiled down at her, giving full view of the slight flush to his cheeks and the sharp canines exposed from behind his lips. just before the last notes of the song gave birth to the next, the duke tugged the girl up and held her steady as the couples around them broke off to new partners.
with an uncharacteristically cheeky grin on her face, the duchess tugged his tie down softly and pressed her painted lips to his cheek, lingering briefly before she pulled away.
"until next time, duke."
wriothesley stood, slightly flustered, a light dusting of pink across his cheeks as he watched the duchess disappear amongst the sea of dancers, whisked off by another. he lifts a hand to touch his cheek, the only evidence of their exchange a light smudge of rouge and the sound of her airy laugh, drifting away with the wind.

Just a little piece I came up with:-
As far as the eye could see, distinguished guests were spread throughout the ballroom hall like a red carpet.Though, not me, as I stood in the desolate corner of the humongous ballroom, waiting for the one and only person who could free me from the shackles holding me still on the spot, the one who had invited me but failed to turn up himself. Here I stood admiring the ballroom for its unspoken beauty, soft moonlight seeping in through the only place where I felt like I could breathe, couples wore matching outfits with their significant half, the walls, so out of my reach, even as I stood in a corner, it could not be considered the corner of the ballroom, but were i to go and measure the corner with my own two feet, I would have undoubtedly missed the ball. At last, I saw a dominant figure approaching me, it was none other than the one I was waiting for. As he stood in front of me, despite being the late one to arrive, he did indeed have an apologetic look in those gray yet seemingly blackish eyes.I couldn't not forgive him, he uttered an apology though he didn't need to as I had already forgived him the moment I was aware of his presence. As if he saw right through me, his face lit up in joy, his eyes sparkled like that of a child who had been released from detention, He extended his hand and asked
"May I have the honour of taking this beautiful lady's first dance? "
" why, of course, you may "
He gently pulled me into the center of the ballroom, the people had stopped chattering about irrelevant things and started whispering about the very man who was leading me
" Isn't that the Duke of the fortress of meropide ? "
" It's the first time I'm seeing him up close "
They continued this until we stood in the center of the ballroom. He didn't seem to care about those who were whispering about him, his gaze fixated on me while he took grasp of my waist and twirled me around. I couldn't help but smile at him, he too smiled a smile that noone but me, could see. I saw it as an opportunity to tease him for making me wait so long
" Looks like someone was rather busy, isn't that right, Duke wriothesley ? "
" Your words wound me, M'lady, i do seem to recall that I told you to speak to me without formalities and yes, indeed I was busy but not so much that I'd forget about you"
He wore a scheming smile on his face all the while
" Is that right ? I guess, I'll take your word for it, just for now though "
" As you see it fit, M'lady "
We exchanged friendly remarks all the while dancing, I couldn't quite recall the last time I felt this happy and lucky to have someone around... .

“This is… such a big party,” you murmur, loud enough to be heard over the baroque music in the background.
“Such a grand party, do you mean?” Furina asks, striding up to you. She is no longer Fontaine’s archon, but she still seems to be wherever anything important happens. Her presence doesn’t bother you; in fact, you’re happy to see her. Hearing about her past had broken your heart when you heard about it, and you feel rather happy that she’s finding joy in her new life.
“Grand indeed,” you grin. You look around; huge crystal chandeliers, paintings, candles, and tables filled with food and drinks sprinkled miscellaneously around the room all contribute to the almost overwhelming sights you are seeing. But the best part is seeing all the people talking, eating, dancing… They are what fill the room with liveliness and excitement. Chatter fills your ears as you turn back to Furina. “I think it’s wonderful.”
“Hmph. Of course it’s wonderful,” she says proudly, but even she wears a smile. “What kind of dance would it be if it weren’t? Barely an audience would show up if it weren’t so dazzling.”
“I guess you’re right,” you say thoughtfully.
“Ah! If I were wrong about a dance, that would be quite the predicament,” she says dramatically. “Enjoy the party. I will go see what other guests are rambling about.” With that, she swiftly turns away, leaving you to hope you hadn’t offended her. But when she flashes you a smile as she leaves, you realize she had been joking.
After your conversation with the former archon, you go off into the crowd, losing yourself to the fun and organized chaos around you. Is that an appropriate way to think of dance?
As you roam from place to place, occasionally picking up a strawberry dipped in chocolate, you begin to tire slightly from all the people dancing around you, and you decide to take a glass of water and venture to a less crowded part of the room, where the air is cooler and the movements of the dancers don’t dizzy you. You take a moment to breathe, letting your body relax before you feel a prickle at the back of your neck, and you turn, knowing that you’re being watched.
“It took you long enough,” a familiar voice says, and you jump, not expecting to hear it in such a scene like this one. “I was starting to think you wouldn’t see me.”
Your eyes widen when they land on Wriothesley, the Duke of the Fortress of Meropide. “Ah! Bonsoir (good evening), Wriothesley,” you say in surprise. “I didn’t realize you’d be attending the dance,” you add, eyebrows rising in curiosity.
“I didn’t think I would either, but I was invited as an… esteemed guest, as the invitation put it.” He smirks, sitting back on his chair with a glass in his hand. It was barely touched. “However I am always unsure of how to act when these… dances occur…” He grumbles, rolling his eyes and swinging the handcuffs he keeps with him at all times out of habit.
“What, surveying the room for trouble?” You joke, sitting near him but keeping a polite distance away. “Spotted any perpetrators?”
Wriothesley shakes his head. “Well of course I’ve been on the lookout… It’s just a simple habit, I guess,” he says, glancing around and then back to you. “I didn’t expect you to be here, either, Y/n.”
You snort. “Ah, well, I seem to have a knack for figuring out where you’ll be.” A teasing grin spreads across your face.
“Of course, how…” He trails off. “You came here because I’m attending?” His question comes out of nowhere.
Your eyes widen. “Ah, you wish,” you stutter, and your face heats up at his smile. “I was invited by mail invitation.”
He laughs. “I’m only joking, Y/N,” he assures, even though it didn’t sound like a joke, and his eyes go back to watching the dancers.
“Still searching for trouble?” You raise an eyebrow.
“Actually, I was trying to understand why so many people enjoy dancing. So close to so many others… It’s as if they’re waiting for something bad to happen.” He frowns.
“I think they’re just enjoying themselves. I mean, look at how happy they are,” you smile, looking at them.
Wriothesley looks at them for a moment and then glances at you. You swallow but pretend not to notice.
“I never learned to dance,” he murmurs quietly, mostly to himself, and you barely hear him. You turn to look into his ice-blue eyes.
Your answer comes out of your mouth before you can even think it through. “I can show you…?” You trail off, eyes widening at your own words and looking away. “Ah, or I can go grab something to eat if you want-”
“No need,” he waves a hand in dismissal. “I already had a bite to eat earlier. You’ve piqued my interest, however, about the dancing,” he smirks, eyes making direct contact with yours.
You swallow. “No, it’s okay! I know you just said you didn’t understand the point in dancing-”
“-Then show me, Y/n,” he replies calmly, standing up and approaching you. You swallow as he towers almost an entire head above your height, and in the candlelight, you can see the scar under his eye.
He once scared you; you’d only seen him from afar, witness to the arrests he’d made only through the Steambird newspaper. Covered in scars and dressed in an outfit that was somehow both gangly and also somehow… proper, it was a normal reaction to have.
You had once become a suspect when you were seen near where he’d made an arrest one day. He’d actually threatened you, which only stoked the fear you felt towards him. But the Duke seemed to have a sixth sense and quickly came to the conclusion that you truly had nothing to do with the guilty’s antics, even though you’d known the person he’d incarcerated vaguely.
After handcuffing the man, he’d given you the address to the fortress just in case you learned anything else of the case. However, it was wrapped up soon after his departure, so there was no point in mailing him, and you hadn’t found any evidence anyway.
However, after learning about how cut off the prison could be from the overworld, you decided to mail him, just to ask about the case and how he was doing in the Fortress.
That was how your friendship had started and existed for the past few months, with friendly letters sent back and forth between the two of you.
Now you stand here, once again slightly intimidated by his presence. You notice the outfit and the handcuffs he has with him are both the same ones you’d seen with him when he’d first threatened you.
But when he gives you a grin and raises an eyebrow in such a boyish way, you can’t help but smile back. “D’accord.” (Okay.)

You lead him towards the crowd, not bothering to try to reach the center as too many people are already there. Reaching out towards him, you watch him for any sort of pause or hesitation, but he only lifts his eyes, almost… nervous, accepting your hand.
Luckily, Wriothesley is the observant type, and when you place your hand on his shoulder, his other hand rests on your side just like everyone else around you. Slowly, the two of you sync to each other and then to the classical music on the stage. You glance up as the cello starts a solo, the bass following, and then turn back to him, smiling. “You’re a natural,” you say, your smile breaking into a grin.
A look of surprise flashes across his face. “Am I?” He replies softly.
You nod and then lift his arm, a joking smile playing out on your face. At first, you can sense his confusion, but then he rolls his eyes and attempts to twirl. You burst out laughing at the absurdity of the situation, twirling someone who’s so much taller than you. People turn to stare, but your attention is on him as he turns back to face you.
“Of course you are,” you say playfully.
His response is a content “Hmm” before suddenly copying your movement perfectly, twirling you in one fluid motion, unlike the clumsy one you’d tried with him before.
“You forget that I’m the Duke of Meropide. Catching on quickly comes naturally with the position,” he drawls, and it’s your turn to roll your eyes.
“No need to remind me,” you retort, and his lips pull up into a smirk, teeth flashing.
The two of you continue to dance, shooting jokes and laughs at each other before the conversation gradually shifts to one where you speak about the other’s recent life, troubles, excitements, etcetera. You can’t help but feel a warm feeling in your chest as you dance with him, feeling at ease. Your movements come naturally with his, as if you’ve done this many times before when in reality, this is the first time he’s been in your presence ever since the catching of the criminal.
“You know,” he murmurs, tilting his head downwards and making direct eye contact. “I could give you a pass to come to the Fortress,” he murmurs, pulling you close, voice lowering. You shudder.
“I’m not sure if I’m technically supposed to, but,” he says, pulling back. “-I think I can make an exception for one person.”
You swallow, suddenly nervous. “I… Quoi?" (What?) "Really?” You ask, dumbfounded.
He nods. “You’d be allowed to come and leave as you please,” he assures. “So we can see each other more often?”
Your eyes blink, and quickly, the distance between you two seems way, way too close, and yet, you find yourself continuing to sway with him. “I… would love that, Wriothesley.”
He tilts his head, observing you and smiling. “Say it again,” he murmurs softly.
You frown in confusion. “Say my name.”
A shiver runs down your spine like a cold snake on fire, an unsettling yet welcoming feeling finding its way to your chest.
“Wriothesley.”
Both of you smile at the same time, and he pulls away, still holding your hand and leading you away from the crowd. “Where are you taking me?” You chuckle.
“Somewhere we can sign the paperwork, of course,” he replies, and you hesitate in confusion. He stops to look at you. “For the pass?”
“Oh,” you say, blinking.
He snorts at your expression. “Here, I think there’s an office down the hall. By any chance, do you have a pen with you?”
You shake your head. “Eh, I don’t know why I asked. It can’t hurt to shuffle through someone’s office for a pen, right?” He grins mischievously, and you bark out a laugh. Duke or not, you suppose Wriothesley would always have a rebellious side.
“I’ll figure something official out,” he says nonchalantly. “Here, sit down. I’ll be right back. Want some tea, Y/n? I’ll bring a cup for you.”

I’m a little late, but here I am with a POV to feed the Wriothesley fans. For context, you are a secretary to Neuvillette and have an ex that cheated on you.
You were standing on the sidelines of an extravagant dance, admiring the couples moving in time with the music. Your own partner was late, seeing as he had to come from a fortress under the sea you could excuse him as you always do. An important secretary to the Chief Justice like yourself should not be bothered by your boyfriend's behind schedule. You enjoy watching until a hand touches your shoulder and you turn to see your ex, standing in a suit and holding a singular rainbow rose towards you.
"What do you want?" You say, your smile a tight line against your beautiful features. "I would like to request a dance and that you accept this rose?
Perhaps after you could listen to me-" "I told you we were done." His eyes darken and he grabs your wrist, forcing the rose into it. With your choice of staying on the sidelines, there was not anyone nearby to help you and you would rather not cause a commotion due to your status. “Let me go and you won’t be in trouble with my Duke.” He scoffs and glares at you, “as if I would believe that blatant lie. How could an arrogant woman like you get a man like the infamous Duke of Meropide." "You would be better off with me anyways, so why not tell your lies to someone who’d believe you?"

A smirk appears on Wriothesley's face as your ex turns around, surprised at losing his grip on you and shocked that what you said was true. "I apologize, your grace, I was kindly asking if she could have the first dance with me." He chuckles and raises an eyebrow towards him, "this is a very public and well-known occasion, albeit the archon is now gone from her seat, we still honor her....brazen balls. So the first dance partner is known to be the romantic interest of the one dancing, correct?" You watch as your ex takes a nervous breath, wringing his hands together.
"I apologize, I did not know-" "Well, I hope you know the consequences if you have lied to me," Wriothesley responds, his hand motioning towards the handcuffs on his waist. "I won't be in your way again, your grace." The man quickly bows and hastes himself away, putting a grin on Wriothesley's face as he turns to you. "Are you alright?" He says, caressing your cheek. You smile and take his hand, "I am. Though," you gently pull up the rainbow rose that was forced into your hand earlier towards him, "I believe I am owed a dance, for you are late." His eyes rage at the sight of the rose, but calm when gazing into your eyes. "Yes," he takes the rose and crushes it in his hands, letting the torn petals fall to the floor as his icy violet eyes capturing yours. "I believe I do owe you a dance," he says as he grabs you by the waist and lifts you up, joining the couples that you were previously watching, you now join in.
"What a lovely night for some particular... festivities, shall we say... Oh, don't look at me like that, you know as well as I that there're some less than favourable events partaking tonight, Your Grace. Par for the course, I'm afraid. _Although, that's not to say one can't have any _*_fun_*_ while dealing with the aforementioned troubles now, is it?"_

I find myself near _constantly_ listening to at least one of them on the daily; whether I'm working on a project or just idly puzzling/crafting, your concoctions accompany me in my waking hours (and sometimes when I pass into slumber, too!). The music that's a little more upbeat and dangerous, the undercover investigation of the event! The drama of catching and arresting Douger, it felt like a Sherlock Holmes movie *chef's kiss* i love it ♡
