I've always wanted a stock SilverWing. I had a buddy in VP-94 stationed and NAS New Orleans in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He had a CX-500 SilverWing. I was stationed at NAS North Island in Coronado, CA. I rode a Moto Guzzi(former Colorado State Patrol) bike out to visit him and other buddies stationed there. We had a great time.
@@motorcyclerewind Yeah it would! I'm looking for a project to rebuild again. It's been a decade or two, but I used to bodge motorcycles constantly. I've rebuilt a KZ1000, a Mogo Guzzi V1000, a Ducati 450 Desmo, a Honda CL360, a Z1R(yes, really; found in a shop in Honolulu), and a Triumph 500. If you have any inexpensive ones give me a holler!
you do give us some interesting bikes to see Eric - never one of the bikes I lusted after in the 80s, but I can appreciate it non the less. looking forward to yet another of your series - good stuff.
This is going to be fun. Especially because I don’t know anything about them. Get to learn something new. Been spending all my free time in CX500 Turbo forums and pouring over the service and owners manuals. Thanks for watching.
Very exciting project bike. I had heard of the CX500 Turbo with fuel injection and water cooled in 1982!!! Wow, was Honda ahead of there competitors in 1982? I don’t know about the other manufacturers. I’ll be watching! Is there many of those bikes to be found from that era? Thanks Don
Yeah, Honda was really ahead of their time. They filed for over 20 patents for this bike. They only made about 5000 worldwide in 1982. Only 2500 were imported to the US. After 42 years, who knows how many of those are still around. This is the only CX500 Turbo I’ve ever seen. In 1983 they came out with a CX650 Turbo, which they only made less 2000. We featured one of those on the channel last year. Thanks for watching.
I'm so stoked for you Eric. That is a great looking bike, and I am starting to love the 80's bikes with the fairings. Looking forward to all the videos on this. Show us all the details and timelapses are cool too!! 😁 🤟🤟🤟
Nice bit of '80's motorcycle manufacturer experimentation right there! I had a Yamaha XJ 650 Seca Turbo ('82 or '83, don't remember which one but mine was silver) and while it never lived up to the hype of "liter bike performance" it was a fun bike that made many trips between Los Angeles and San Francisco without a single hick-up. Looking forward to seeing this progress until it rides side by side with the GPz. I had an '84 GPz 550 also, so seeing you get another iconic '80's bike to bring back to life is especially entertaining. Eric, I also had an '82 Suzuki Katana, so maybe you could find one of those that needs a sympathetic refresh. 😁
Love the color scheme on the CX Turbo. Honda sure laid the “Turbo” marketing on pretty thick. Got fire, just need fuel to get there at the right time. Looking forward to turbo noises in the near future.
Cool bike... Definitely ahead of its time for a early 80s motorcycle. Turbo motorcycles where a big thing in th 80s .. with the all the big 4 Japanese companies competing against each other. Hope everything works out for you so you can enjoy it.
TheHonda Starter Motors usually fail due to worn Starter Brushes You one showed signs of Water ingress always avoid non OEM motors ,the aftermarket ones are useless... better to rebuild the OEM Original . great video as always. Turbo Engines run on lower Compression generally......but your Gauge may be just a bit creaky 😀
Your compression tester leaking down is probably the cause of its inaccuracy, but at least it's consistent. And having the same reading is much more important than the actual number - especially if it runs.
Hey mate just like any cx500 they had problems with the mechanical seal at the back of the engine and if its been sitting for a while it will let you know if it's bad by leaking water from the seep hole, any problems I'm sure you can ask BJ, he's done a few
Oh fun, A friend of mine had one that he lovingly refered to as "The Sh!tbox from Hell", he was nuts. I had a couple times on it myself and once it spooled up, hang on, it'll take the tan right off you!
Not magnets but to clear carbon brushes never have any qualitys but to conduct power to the segments on the armature to turn starter but if thay were magnets thay dont like being hit with hamers but plastic mallets lightly if this info helps please use to instruct others . Thay may not have the experiance you have and damage parts that didnt need replacing
It's painful watching the engine being cranked without removing the plugs, checking for rust and squirting some LUBE down the bores. 😢 As for what love the turbo needs?
@@motorcyclerewind as far as I know yes. With a high content of graphite for friction and electrical conductivity. Thanks for the nice video, I love these old bikes
Welcome to the episode of Turbo Thursdays. New Turbo content every Thursday at 12pm CST.
The early 80's turbo era... you scored a cult classic there!
I know. So excited to get this motorcycle. Can’t wait to ride it.

The crazy thing is this bike has a NAS New Orleans sticker on it.
@@motorcyclerewind I know! When I first saw the motorcycle I thought it was my buddy Steve's, but he didn't have the Turbo.
That would have been wild if it was his.

the epitome of the 1980s . I love it
I agree. Love the styling. Ironically this motorcycle was manufactured in 11/81 which is the same month I met my wife.

I cant wait to ride it. An 82 Katana and a Seca would round out the 80's bikes. Thanks for watching.
We need a slab side episode.

Couldn't agree more! I want turbo noises.
I have always wanted a cx650E. Very simialar bike . euro styling. I did not make it to the U.S. Luckily for me it did come to Canada. so there is hope
My friend had the cx650 turbo which was a beautiful motorcycle.
Very nice. Looks like a keeper to me.
Yes it is. Thanks for watching.
Loving this! Always wanted one of these bikes!
I am really excited about this one. Thanks for watching.
I love your love of and
approach to motorcycles, so genuinely enthusiastic. You're Eric the Bike Whisperer 👍.
My wife tells me I am easily excitable. 🤣😂🤣This one is going to be fun. Thanks for watching.
This is such a great video. I love your enthusiasm and commitment to bring it back to life.
If you think I was enthusiastic in this video wait till I’m riding it. 🤣😂🤣

Thanks for the info. Definitely will stay away from non OEM.
The turbo bikes are bringing some good money these days
I know. Pretty crazy. There were only about 5k of these produced. Wonder how many have survived!
I love how excited you get ❤
Keep talking like that and you’ll see me excited. 🥰
@@motorcyclerewind😂😂😂
I want to ride that thing so bad!
You’re first on the list after me.
Wow! You scored! Cool motor and factory turbo!
This one is going to be fun. Thanks for watching.

Searching for a new tester now. Can’t wait to get this guy running and riding.
This is the bike ik always dreamd off
Such a cool motorcycle. Puts a smile on my face every time I walk into the shop. Thanks for watching.
I understand, no apologies nessasary
Thanks for understanding and thanks for watching.
Very cool bikes. Looking forward watching this one get back on the road.
You and me both! Should reloads of fun.
Great bike. What happened with the CL project and the trading up idea?
Life got in the way of the SL350 trade up plans. I like to think, I fiercely adhere to the rules that I make up on the spot.😂🤣😂
Great job , saved a starter motor
Right on! It's too easy to try and fix it before you buy one. Thanks for watching
My fuel pump gets tight if i dont start the bike for a long time. It frees up if i hit it with a few short bursts of reverse polarity.
Thankfully I had one I bought for my 83 GPz1100 on the shelf and it works.
Hey mate just like any cx500 they had problems with the mechanical seal at the back of the engine and if its been sitting for a while it will let you know if it's bad by leaking water from the seep hole, any problems I'm sure you can ask BJ, he's done a few
Thanks for the heads up. BJ and I have already talked about the bike. He has so much knowledge about these bikes.
Ha Eric . Did you mean brushes and not magnets ?? LOL ... Wasn't Yoda the parts guy at HD in Sildell ??
I’m sure that’s what I meant. Are they the part that create the magnetic 🧲 field to turn the motor?
What a great fined congratulations 😊
Thank you 😁 Super excited about this one.
Now you just need the other three mfg’s turbo’s to go with it.
Challenge accepted. 🤣😂🤣
Oh, hell yeah!
Turbo Thursdays for the foreseeable future. Can’t wait to make some turbo noises. Thanks for watching.

Such a cool motorcycle
mityvac compression tester
Looking it up now. Thanks for the tip.
It's painful watching the engine being cranked without removing the plugs, checking for rust and squirting some LUBE down the bores. 😢 As for what love the turbo needs?
some oil in the Bores would have helped with freeing up the Piston Rings as well as improving Compression readings.
I borescoped the engine when I rolled it to make sure the engine was free I put oil in the cylinders. Unfortunately, I did not record it.
are you selling any of your bikes?
Selling some yes. No plans to sell this one anytime soon.
These are not magnets :)
are they called brushes? Thanks for watching.
