  • My basic method for starting tomato seeds in peat pellets. You can do the same with pepper seeds. Peat pellets are best used for growing single plants. It is very difficult to divide two or more tomato seedlings from peat pellets when moving them into transplant cups.

    With Spring coming in the US, this would be a great tip for getting plants started. I live in sub-tropical area in Australia, so can pretty much grow tomatoes all year round... but do have some problems to contend with... Thanks for the video... :)

      Gary Pilarchik Thanks... There has been a bit of a heat wave this year, but up here in Brisbane, we only had about 2 weeks, it has been far worse in the Southern States this year... They are getting a beating with added bushfires... No snow storms though :) Hope you have not had to contend with too much of that... On the news it has looked terrible.

    you could sprinkle cinnamon on the peat pots to kill the algae or mold/mildew :)

    I live in Hawai'i, so the climate is pretty moderate, and maintains a average temperature of about 78-89 Degrees F with 30-75 % humidity. This is perfect growing conditions for most plants. And it is like this all year! :D

    Answers a lot of questions, thanks. I especially like the idea of using a spare peat disc to cover the seeds. If I'm limited with a rare seed, is there any other reason not to just plant one?

    How would you transplant these in the peat pellets? Just leave them in there and put the whole thing in the cup?! Sorry, new gardener here!

      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому

      Life's_Journey Yep. Some people take of the fine cloth around it befor transplanting it. But most just drop it in a hole.

    Hey, this may sound a little bit silly but where do you get your seeds? From the actual Tomato? And if i have some hot peppers and cut them and take out the seeds and let them dry a bit and plant them it's fine too? Thanks

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому

      david rato Search my channel for collection tomato seeds or fermenting tomato seeds. It shows you exactly how I do it. I get them from the tomatoes.

    the last frost date here is may 10th so should i start my peppers and tomatoes on march 1st?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому

      ChurnMush That is pretty close. If you are planning 8 weeks growth inside that will work. They like soil temps around 50 degrees. If you are doing 6 weeks maybe wait a week later or so. If the ground is too cold the transplants just sit and wait for warmth.

    Making a hole with the bottom of the pencil is a good idea, but how about if my packet of seeds say it need to be 2cm

      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  9 років тому +1

      Karl Official I did a video where AI planted seeds at all different depths. All the tomato seed germinated perfectly fine. What I learn is, they can be planted deeper or more shallow than what the seed packs say and they do fine.

    I am getting mold on my peat pellets as my seedlings are germinating. I am not watering them too much.. just the initial water to raise them from the compact state then several days later when they dry. Is it the container that is causing this or the peat pellet itself. This is my first time using peat pellets and my first time with a mold problem. I have been using plastic rectangle containers from the dollar store and also the aluminum baking trays, both caused mold. Any thoughts? And is the mold harmful to my plant, do I need to toss all of them now?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  9 років тому

      nicooo8 They get it. Green algae too. Peat trays and pellets get it. The mold and fungus or more any eyesore than a threat.

    • @zone4garlicfarm

      +nicooo8
      Molds and algae are signs that it is not warm enough and there is a lack of air circulation. A seedling heat mat can fix any temperature issues. Removing the greenhouse cover for a hour each day will allow enough air movement. After the seeds germinate you should remove the cover and place the seedlings under grow lights.

    Peat pellets are horrible.. I have no idea why you'd recommend them.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому

      Kimberly H Just how to use them the right way. Why dont you like them? I won't every do a video on peat pressed cells or containers. Those are horrible.

    • @kkaye76
      @kkaye76 10 років тому

      I agree with you that any pressed cells and containers are horrible.. including peat pellets. I would just think that if you want to help others learn to grow better seedlings, you wouldnt be recommending them. So what you're saying is, you're not recommending them but merely showing the best way to use them? It appeared to me that you were recommending them. I've been growing my own seedlings for 30 years and the only thing similar that I would recommend at all is Parks Bio Dome with their sponges. They work better than any other commercial product, hands down. If you havent tried them, give them a shot.. You will be pleasantly surprised & never use a peat pot ever again. Saying all that.. I do have some of the biodome cells and use them.. but I also make my own pots from newspaper & use my own soil-less potting mix I make up every year. Giving a plant plenty of room for their roots to spread out creates a plant that thrives and excels..

    • @callitags
      @callitags 10 років тому

      Kimberly H You never answered why you don't like them. That information might be helpful to people who have never tried them before.

    • @kkaye76
      @kkaye76 10 років тому +1

      I dislike them because every time I used them, my plants were stunted, and contrary to them being touted as being biodegradable, and easy for roots to grow thru them, I never had any plants who's roots were able to easily grow beyond the pellet. Also, if you don't completely bury the entire pellet and leave part of the top above the soil line it will dry out the pellet and most often lead to treat of the plant. I can't tell you how many times I gave them a try, because I wanted them to work...they just don't do a satisfactory job...
