Sun sugar is my favorite too! I growed super sweet 100, sun sugar, and sweet million. Sun sugar is definitely the winner. It’s the sweetest, and another winning point is its thin skin. Sweet million is almost as good as sun sugar, maybe just the sun color makes me feel sun sugar is slightly sweeter. Super sweet 100 is surpassed by sweet million on every aspect, from flavor to skin thickness. No need to grow it in the future. Another very good one is black cherry, I didn’t find the seedling in my area this year, but next year I’ll definitely grow it.

I've never grown cherry tomatoes before (and I hadn't grown regular tomatoes in many, many years), but this year we tried a Sweet 100 plant. These tomatoes are absolutely *delicious*, although they're right up to the edge of my personal "too sweet". And I was amazed at how well the plant did, despite many weeks of neglect while life smacked us sideways this summer. It just keeps producing, and *producing*, and _producing_, despite irregular watering and no weeding at all! We're definitely going to grow this guy again, but now I know that it needs a whole trellis just for itself. It just laughed at the tomato cage my MiL gave me for it...

I have grown Sun Gold for about as long as it’s been available. Two years in a row I also grew Sun Sugar. I didn’t like the thickness of Sun Sugars skin. I grew them the second year to make sure the skin issue wasn’t a fluke. It wasn’t and haven’t grown them since. I do always grow SS100 and Sun Gold. rotating other varieties in and out just to try.
Thank you for posting the great review.

The sun sugar was bred to be as sweet or sweeter than sun gold with thicker skin so they don't split like sun gold do. Sun sugar and Cherry bomb are my 2 favorites but they both have thicker skin. No splitting.

After 35 years of growing I still like Super Sweet 100's as my fave cherry tomato. Obviously very subjective. I never trim these plants and let them grow up my 11 foot awning and use the same clamshell plastic clips I see you using. Great for salads and salsas. Here in 9b Sacramento mine will grow well into December and last year I overwintered the best one and it produced nicely this year.

I grew Sungold this year and it was my favorite tasting cherry. However, it was not as hardy and didn't appear to have as much resistance to leaf diseases as the black cherry and Barry's Crazy cherry. I live in Texas zone 9A with lots of heat and humidity.

Next year I have Roma, San Marzano and Amish Paste planned, so I can find out which one I like best. I'll start saving seeds the year after.
I suppose I should pick a few cherry varieties as well, so I can do the same with them.
I've grown Super Sweet 100 and used them to make sauce with Roma and Better Boy. It's a nice combination.

It's always great to hear what other tomato enthusiasts love to grow and eat! So far my favorite cherry tomato is Sungold. Last year I grew Sunsugar instead and I still prefer Sungold over Sunsugar and Sweet 100. This year I added Honeycomb and it was good but Sungold still wins. My favorite regular size tomato is Dad's Sunset with Green Zebra coming in second.

Years ago I bought a packet of "Random cherry and grape tomato seeds." The only tomato seeds that grew were small and orange and delicious! I have no idea what they're called. I know they go overnight from green to orange, and if I wait until they turn red, they are too ripe, but I've never minded the secrecy. I've propagated that little, orange tomato ever since.

I tried Land Race Current tomatoes last year. It's an indeterminate so I grew it with 2 leads. It produced very little but lovely snack tomatoes. This year I grew it like a determinate in a 7g pot and just let it bush. It has been fantastic all season! The grandchildren love how tiny the tomatoes are and I really like how they teste. With their tiny size I haven't found preserving them worth it but as something to snack on, they are perfect.

Love your videos Scott! This year was my first time growing cherry tomatoes after watching your channel. I am in zone 3 up in Canada and started them early inside. The two I grew were the Super sweet 100 F1 VF and Grey's sweet Cherry. Both were fantastic but very different. Sweet 100 was for me a mild tomato taste and sweet, while the Grey's were a much more intense tomato taste and less sweet. My favorite were the Grey's. Looking forward to trying many more varieties next year.

L.Y. I had ridiculously massive yields of Sungold and Supersweet 100. Was first year I used a large 18 gal storage tote full of really rich "Sea Soil" from British Columbia Canada where I reside. I only use that brand. Size of container and regular watering was the ticket for me. I love both varieties but Sungold was my fave of all cherries I've ever grown. This year I will have them again along with Black Cherry for first time. Excited for Black Cherry as everybody seems to rave about em. My cherry tomatoes are now growing to at least 8' tall and packed with fruit all season long. I gave hundreds away and had several hundreds frozen and still eating them in mid May.

My "go to" cherry tomatoes are Sun Gold & Sweet 100. I've grown Sun Sugar as well, and I didn't really notice a taste difference vs. Sun Gold, and the Sun Golds won me over with their sheer volume of production.

I don’t know why, but I’m attracted to oddly colored tomatoes, even though most disappoint in the flavor. But the IR and Bumblebee are both prolific & yummy. Living in the Pacific NW our growing season is short - as in it gets cool and wet come September, but freezes late. That and being further North than Colorado, it gets sunny later, and dark earlier. We are on the verge of not being warm enough to ripen the fruit. As such I have learned to stay away from the really big tomatoes so Early Girl, Roma, and the cherry and pear tomatoes are what I grow. But this year, someone swapped the tag on a plant container so the Roma turned out to be something else. Some years I get long vines of tomatoes, but not this year. Our very hot June rather stunted their growth.

All those cherry tomatoes sound like they'd do great in Nigella Lawson's moonblush tomatoes recipe.
The mini tomatoes most commonly available in stores in ireland seem to be mini roma tomatoes which are lovely
We get a chilled mozzarella and sunsweet tomatoe pizza most weeks from a local grocery chain, the pizza has mini red and yellow tomatoes on it, but sunsweet seems to be a method of preserving tomatoes rather than a variety, pity because I really want to know what variety the yellow tomatoes are as they're delicious and I want to grow them for snacking and salads

So a challenge to you. Has anyone ever looked at tomatoes and terroir? I've grown varieties that people have flipped over and found them in my garden quite mediocre. Perhaps a project for next year? I'll be trying this out.

I have considered that and think it makes a difference. Soil nutrients and minerals can affect tomato flavor.

    • @GardenerScott

It depends on trellising and pruning, but a minimum of 18-24 inches should work.

Thanks Scott. I've been growing grape tomatoes which seem to crack less during rainy periods. On another topic, do you have a video of constructing that metal bed you're growing them in? I'm making a metal bed this fall and the videos I've watched they generally cut the metal and screw them into the frame with the corrugation going up and down and overlap the panels to make them sturdier but cutting with an angle grinder is a tough job.

Believe it or not I found it easier to use manual tin snips. Started with a power grinder but soon switched to the snips. My raised beds are galvanized sheets set vertically and overlapping. They are two feet high.

Which are hybrids and which heirloom? I know Sungold's are hybrid, and I've been growing them from seeds for a few years but I feel like the taste has never been quite as good as the original year of proper Sungold. They've still been good though, and about 1/3rd of the plants come out red, but otherwise taste fairly similar.

That is a resistance that is not bred into many tomatoes other than some for greenhouses. Here's a good list of resistance in different varieties: www.vegetables.cornell.edu/pest-management/disease-factsheets/disease-resistant-vegetable-varieties/disease-resistant-tomato-varieties/
