Do you say that knowing about Paul Mooney and Richard Pryor's son (who was a minor at the time)? If that's the definition of a true friend, I don't want true friends.

Anyone interested in Mooney, read/listen to his autobiography “Black is the New White” narrated by Paul himself, it’s a great listen and insight into him and his relationship with RP..

Mooney is my favorite comedian of his generation - aggressive truth teller who held nothing back. Even when I really disagreed with what he was saying, he'd make it funny enough where it didn't matter. Also love Aries Spears and Godfrey's impersonation of him, so spot on especially when you've seen interviews like these.

Thank you for sharing this slice of our species’ oral tradition. I played a snippet from Is It Something I Said on vinyl at my eighth birthday party and walked out of the room. And I so enjoyed hearing the adults scramble to find the record player and turn it off.

I love Mooney, but he is sooo full of shit. If you are in the comedy circuit, you know he is famous for his gift of gab, and is such a bullshit artist. Funny as funny gets though. Case in point...While it's possible Mooney was hanging out with people snorting cocaine with $1,000 bills, it's highly unlikely. That note ended production in 1934. Banks would no longer have had them in the 1970's when Mooney was talking about seeing them. I suppose a collector could have rolled an old one up, but that makes no sense. Besides, his story talks about it as though all the rich guys were doing it.

He's very funny, but is not beyond bending truth to create a good joke. He's very good and he knows it. One of the tools of a narcissist is to acclaim themselves in ways that cannot be independently verified, like Paul's highschool classes and Trump's tales of unnamed billionaires and "big strong guys" coming to him with tears in their eyes telling him how great he is. How are you gonna know it didn't happen?

You're probably right, but he was so funny. And he was equally caustic to blacks and whites alike. Reminds me of my grandmother, who didn't suffer fools gladly. Truly unique artist...and he's right about Pryor. Richard was, and still is, the greatest comic ever. Chappell hasn't taken that title...
