  • In this video, I play with Westwood Instruments' new Lost Synth library. It's a deep dive with over 80 sounds, over 200 presets, an A-B mixer and loads of fx that I can't quite explain. The video is a breakdown of a piece of music, and shines a light on a broader question about how to make your music more nostalgic.

Thanks for taking a look at this Dan! We're so pleased you love it! We couldn't wait to get it out and we're SO stoked from the response it's getting. Great to have you back making videos - you've been missed!

Each generation rediscovers nostalgia and each has its own version. When we were younger, things were simpler to us. It's funny to think how "new" this piece would have sounded back in the day. Keep up the good work, Dan!

I love when trends come back around, not for “being 90s” or intentionally nostalgic, but tastes changing in a cyclical way

I find it interesting that almost all music production is made for reproduction (headphones, speakers, etc). Because there are barely any live acoustic venues anymore, everyone is trying to get a "nostalgic" feel - which is really what we've been trained to hear since everyone has been listening to music reproductions for decades - the earlier ones having tape hiss, and filtering caused by the earlier mediums. But tape hiss and compressed dynamic ranges are a thing of the past - yet we re-create those imperfections because it's what people are used to hearing.

'Synths having been round for over 40 years so aren't in perfect condition' something I can relate to on a personal basis :)

i've got two answers for your first question. 1.) social answer. Nostalgia is a response to perceived social instability. In the US where I live, that backward look is politically exploited and the instability that fuels it is fomented. 2.) technological. Music technology evolves, yet the quality of raw sound (timbres) aren't always as expressive and vital as previous technologies. Producers reach back to sound worlds proven to open hearts, to instruments and techniques that can be centuries old. K, now i'll watch the rest of the video. I'm a big fan, Dan.

BTW, i cam to similar conclusions in my own review of Lost Synth.

Thanks for deconstructing that, Dan. The creative process has so many pieces anchored in different layers of who we are and what we feel so it's awesome to see how another musicians or artists approach it. Awesome video and loving those sounds! Suscribed! 💟

What is "nostalgic" (not just musically, but generally) starts from the age of the listener. I'd guess I'm around twice your age, so the music i was exposed to first will likely be different than what you first heard. I suppose ambient music is vague enough to draw the listener to emotionally interpret their own way, and a lack of lyrics also helps. I'm a fan of Epic45 who produce wonderful, emotional music that sounds like overhearing someone's memories. I do agree, though, that some sounds do definitely sound "older" than others.

Thanks for this, Dan. You really do bring out the special nostalgic quality of this library. The sounds are certainly better than I could create if I had access to the same legacy gear that Westwood used.
I think that nostalgia only exists because of the strange ability of humans to remember only the good and forget the bad - to feel the positive emotions of the past, and filter out the negative.

Excellent video. I am new to Westwood (being a fan of the big players - Arturia and NI) - but these Lost instruments sound fantastic and on sale for half-price at the moment. Don't know whether to get this one, Lost Keys or the new guitar library! Choices eh?
