Farms under the sea could feed the world in 2050

- Agriculture may not be able to feed the extra 2 billion people that are estimated to inhabit Earth by 2050.
Quartz News' Erik Olsen dives into the world of aquaculture to find a sustainable food source for the planet. Eating mussels could solve the problem and help the planet - but are we willing to introduce them into our diet?

A singular component aquaculture is only a small to moderate improvement from the current system. Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture (IMTA) that conbine aquatic plants (eg. seaweed), fish, filter feeders (e.g., mussels) and deposit feeders (e.g., sea urchins) will be the future. It maximizes feed to calorie conversion efficiency, minimizes feed waste and keeps the water clean.

violinbubi he cooks his food at 500℉
@@violinbubi New studies show that mercury from fish and aquatic species have a very minor effect on humans. Selenium is produced in all living animals to combat mercury poisoning and as such you eat selenium when eating mercury rich animals. The balance is rarely broken by eating aquatic species and the effects of the poisoning are minor when it does occur. While plastics are a concern, there is no way around them at this point and we need to brace ourselves for the cancer spikes that will be occur.
@@violinbubi No doubt that plastics can cause harm, and my original comment was just to clarify that mercury in fish is blown out of proportion. I believe the dangers posed by plastics are now just a part of life and that there is no point in avoiding certain foods. Even vegetarians are poisoned by roundup and pesticides in their foods. The only solution to renewable food sources is for a large proportion of humanity to die off such that more sustainable methods can be enacted, that is not a realistic solution though. So for now we must accept potentially harmful foods. The other guy is an idiot though.
Supermarkets are providing too much meats than we need.
When it rots, they throw it away. And the plastics go along with it.
Boiled fresh mussels and dip with soy sauce . It’s freaking delicious.
and toxic
If mussels are reasonably priced, I'm definitely willing to make them a part of my regular diet. However most places I've been to, it's considered a luxury food, and they are quite expensive.
They should have mentioned that Mussels filter all the toxic metals and microplastics out of the ocean, which you then eat.
It's already known that you shouldn't eat a lot of them because of it.
I freaking LOVE mussels, glad to hear some good news
I’m not a huge fan of the texture but they’re so delicious and if they’re good for the environment, well, SIGN ME UP!
If they filter their food from the water, it could be a very effective way of cleaning the water this seems like a very sustainable way of food. Great video guys. Very well done with the time format you used. Keep it up.
Mussel farms are good up to a point - the feed they eat includes the spawn of local finfish. If the density of mussel farms becomes high, they suppress other marine populations, and mussel growth rates plateau. NZ has been farming them for decades, especially in the Marlborough Sounds.
That’s a very good point.

Mussels are not very healthy tho. The video was very well produced!
The protein is so cheap tho. You dont even have to buy feed
What is a mussel? That was never explained in the video.
@@vaibhavgupta20 It's a bivalve. Like a clam or an oyster.
It is healthy, just need to be tested for heavy metals. This factor can be changed by growing the mussels at different locations.
Most of the unhealthy scare is because they were grown near cities when boats still had lead paint and sewage was discharged at sea. Also they can be tested and I wouldn't be worried with mussels that are grown out in the ocean. Even if we eat pasta with clams once a week instead of steak would make a huge difference in terms of environment, and exposure would be too low for harmful effects even if sometimes they are slightly polluted.

Where can I find sources for the statistics pointed out in this video?
Would be nice if we didnt pollute the ocean
The more you think about this, the more you realize that this video doesn't answer a ton of questions. How nutritious are these? What impact does auquafarming have on the ocean? - fish create a lot of waste too, they aren't special magical beings. What about the microplastics in fish that we've been hearing about recently? - that certainly could be a problem. What about animal welfare concerning other fish - it's easy to cherrypick the invertebrates and claim is not an issue. If you don't cover the bad, only the good, you will misinform people, give them the wrong opinions.
Very nutritious, less to none risk of impact in comparison to other farming methods (That is true at this scale), Waste haha for real? of course the shells, yes microplastics are everywhere at this point (this is is not issues, otherwise your bottle of water would have killed you already), How is there animal welfare here? these little animals thrive in this environment.
contaminants is much less of a health concern for farmed filter-feeders than wild-caught ones, especially say, fish. since farmed ones are harvested at regular intervals, meaning they only get to live a set duration of life/filter a set amount of microplastics and other pollutants (assuming all things equal in the ocean), versus wild sea creature that you just ate might be older than you, meaning they also have been accumulating contaminants for all those years. you find higher and higher concentration of contaminants as you move up the food chain, as contaminants consumed by each previous chain of preys keep getting piled up. So, if the assumption is that microplastics, mercury and other pollutants are already everywhere in the ocean, and ignoring other variables, it is generally safeR to eat the bottom filter-feeders than the carnivorous top alpha fish, farmed ones than wild caught. As for marine life welfare, that's beyond me...
@@manualcontrol7518 very interesting! However both of you, I think, misunderstood me. I was talking about ocean farming in general as well, that includes a whole range of species, not just these invertebrates. I think the video was trying to make a wider point about ocean farming, but maybe I'm wrong as it's been a while since I've watched it.
@@jhannheras9994 I am not just taking about bisphenol-a, which is of course a horrible chemical, I am talking about microplastics in general, that is small particles of plastics. I don't think people deserve being laughed at for showing concern about this issue.

But what about water pollution, microplastics, and ocean acidification? I'm not trying to bash, just wondering
They can be tested for that, just need to find the right place to grow them. There should be regulation stating the amount of toxic metals, etc. On the package, though.

Yeah, after we're done overexploiting land's fertility, let's go for the oceans. Go Humans!!!
You're actually helping the oceans by farming mussels. They filter the excess nutrients from land farms and help stop toxic algal blooms that kill many fish.
@Water & Sky , that's exactly my point. The Marine ecosystem is ridiculously complex. And with the disposal of the entire human-generated waste to the waters joined with very little (almost none) measures taken to maintain the drainage. We cannot afford to lose another ecosystem just for a scientific experiment of harvesting ocean resources to produce food.
