Sonder Short Film | The Silk Road Mountain Race with Adventure Pedlar Pete McNeil

- This year was the inaugural running of the Silk Road Mountain Race, a 1700km race across the wild and remote mountain roads and trails of Kyrgystan.
Pete rode his Sonder Bikes Broken Road Titanium bike loaded with Alpkit luggage and kit.
The terrain varied from fast gravel roads to rough washboard trails through to technical single track and quite a bit of hike-a-bike on steep ground.
Pete took a conservative kit choice based on his experience and packed more than many other riders. In the end, this approach paid off, only 1/3 of the field finished as temperatures dropped below -10 for some riders and snow and heavy rain in the mountains made the going tough.
Pete finished 8th overall in 11.5 days and was the first British finisher as the race became much more of an eliminator, he puts his relative success down to his approach, preparation, and experience of travelling in remote areas.

So youtube "autoplay" gave me "How to Pack for the Highland Trail 550 Bikepacking Route" followed by this. The evolution of a haggard adventurer is a splendid thing to behold. keep on truckin...
Really enjoyed watching you relive this, thanks so much and a great achievement. I'm not a mountain cyclist, but a trekker. Nonetheless, some very sound advice on attitude of mind to go prepared, with realism. Fabulous!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love the approach to kit. Shows how important of an element it is in a race. It’s not all speed speed speed.
I’ve just bought one of those bikes! 😊
That sigh of relief at the end, it's like you've lived through those 10 days again as you were telling the story. ;)
First-hand accounts like yours are what encourages people to go out there and take a leap of faith. Thanks for sharing your story, it's full of great insights into what is probably the toughest race around. I'm giving myself 1 year, maybe 2, before attempting this incredible event. Cheers !
I followed the race on SM and trackleaders, so I've seen lots of the photography of the amazing landscapes. But your first-hand footage and experiences here have really added something to it, just excellent. Thanks Pete & Alpkit!
Many congrats for your 8th position! And thanks for sharing your story. Very inspiring!
Alpkit rules!!!!!
The silk road!!! Wow!!!
Amazing experience and a good video. Congrats on the 8th place. That is an achievemnt to put on the Wall.
Very happy with item.
WoW what a fantastic experience. Well done 👍🏻. Enjoyed this post race video
Love these kinda videos, keep them comming
Fantastic achievement!
Awesome. Great to know. Thank you.
thanks Pete Brilliant Video
Aweseome video. Cheers on getting a good result!
Great effort
A great walk through of your strategy / approach to the race. I can see where the roads and tails could be rough in these remote areas but don't understand why there should be stretches of hike & bike in a race that long. Draws into question the route planning by organizers.
great man, racing, but taking time. can relate to that;) respect!
Great video! Thanks! I am going to partecipate in the Silk Road Mountain Race next summer!!! I will try to get in touch with you and ask as many questions will come to my mind!
Awesome set up - any chance of a list of all components so I can copy the whole spec
Excellent video Pete and very inspiring. As a fellow Sonder rider, I too can't understand why a gravel bike seems to be the weapon of choice for most in ultra events! Knife to a gunfight and all that?😃
thanks for the video. any chance of a kit list and packing video. interested in how the tent packed in and all your clothes as your bags look small. cheers.
0:14 - Yeah, even the dog can't beleive the sound of it! ... xD
I wish to have done a ride like that at least once in my life time.... Never too late but have to wait at least that my son can look after himself..... 😂
What kind of Handlebar/Aerobar is this, your'e using on your Bike?
Ya anybody know that handlebar? Thing looks sweet
Sonder Confucius
Coming in 4 years later.. but how did you like those handlebars??
Great Video, I would love to do the amr in 2021, Could you do a kit list
Are those handlebars Sonder too?
I really dig the bg-music, what is it? Thanks, awesome have an insight into the race . :-)
Any idea where can I get that aerobar for the bike? Much appreciated. Thanks already!
Nice job! Wondering what steps Pete took to avoid food poisoning in that part of the world.
nice to see gravel with a flat bar, in dominate drop bar around
Hi Pete, brilliant ride, I wish I was doing it. If you weren’t sponsored by Alpkit. Would you have used a different bike to complete the race? If so which one?
thanks to the influencers out there we all will buy Alpkit now!
Great video, and I now also have the Sonder Broken Road :-) Question about the Aerobar used on the Love Mud Confucius. Does anybody know which brand and type this is?
Not sure what the brand is, but I just used my bars from my tri bike and they fit OK in the Confucius. You have to be a little careful if you put the Aerobars on the main part of the handlebar as the shape of the Confucius prevents you from placing them in the best position, but they really helped with stretching out my arms when I did the Tour Divide.
The background music is irritating and sounds bloody ridiculous which is a shame cos it's very informative
How did the Ordos 2 handle the trip?
Never mind the bike that beard is on point
Kudos well done . A little more on the bike and gear would be appreciated.
What bar roll is this?
Great video and good effort. Great gear choice, too.
But, there is no way you would cycle that on a gravel bike ( whatever one of those are!....industry buzz words.
Without any training? A little hard to believe
Awesome race, did you drink horse milk??. I'm just glad Alpkit had stuff in stock for you. Lol
Thank you! Very informative. The music during the talking is kind of annoying ;(
👍👍👍💘💘💘🍦😘
What required more endurance was listening to that God awful background music for 12 minutes of your blog.
Music great but not when it overrides the content....
