The main thing I've been super impressed with is that Lively never tries to do too much, which is a really common mistake by rookies. Great player for the Mavs already, and I expect him to be a lot better in the future. This man was so on point in the Minnesota series that the Wolves tried to assassinate him a couple of times by breaking his neck..
He's improved on decision making just since the start of the playoffs. In the first series I saw him turn the ball over several times when he got the pass from the double teamed guard at the free throw line and couldn't decide what to do (resulting in turnovers or bad shots). Now it hits his hand and is gone in a blink, usually so someone in the corner has an open shot before the defense can recover.
@@SDesWriter Yeah I imagine Kidd ran a lot of drills in-between each series of just him passing from the short roll and reading possible coverages after the PnR.
Maturity is an understatement for Lively. All points taken here, that's on top of his personal challenges - and he's still coming out shinning. He is definitely the role model rookie right now.
He does exactly what he needs to well. This is a massively underrated mindset to have as a basketball player nowadays. He’s not looking for post ups, isos, popping when he should roll cause he wants to shoot 3s or going up with every putback opportunity. He’s doing what he should and doing it well. Seriously good draft pick and seriously great player. This is huge for Mavs going forward as now they don’t need to shop for a big man to play with Luka and Kyrie. They can focus all their efforts on trying for 3&D wings to bolster their depth.

I really enjoyed this video as a Mavs fan. D-live has been incredible since the first game, showing glimpses of what he could do on the short roll and the defensive end through the regular season. Even with what he's gone through in his personal life, it's amazing to see him thrive. Let's go Mavs!!!

Commenting before watching the video. Hes mentoring under tyson chandler (former dpoy for the mavs who was the starting center during the 2011 championship run)
The insane thing is that at his year at Duke at first he seemed way too raw even for college play, his draft stock fell in the first half of the season, and then during the year you just saw immense growth from him, he developed so much and in their final games he looked like one of the best centers in the class. Going into the NBA I thought he would struggle at first again and take time to develop, but he just seems to adapt to and learn anything in a couple of months. I'm super impressed
Dallas organization really stepped up. I like their dedication to Luka and determination to win now, and their courage to sign Kyrie, great find in the draft. Amazing.
The back court duo of Doncic and Irving plays a huge factor on his value. He is above average as a roll man, if he improves a little on his passing and shooting (particularly 3's). His current strength is being under the basket, given his length he can easily grab rebounds and is a lob threat. On defense, Doncic and Irving can be both on the floor without having to put too much effort on defense becase of the rim protection. The Mavs aren't as much of a threat behind the arc as the prime Warriors but given the talented back court and 3 proper centers 7'+, one could argue they are a better team right now.
Lively deserves all the success and praise he’s getting life can be rough sometimes and dereck been through a lot and the mavericks is the best place for him to be playing basketball
In this Game 5, I really see the impact of Lively. A big man who can confidently hold the ball way far from the ring when his 2 allstar ball handlers getting doubled. I've seen Gafford lost the ball or made a bad decision when he gets the ball prematurely. This is what separates Lively to JUST a rim running Centers in the NBA.
I think Gafford got better as this series progressed too. Since he’s nowhere near as good of a ball handler as his counterpart, lively, Gafford has had more conviction in passing to others and not digging himself a hole by trying to dribble and make a play.
@@Smido83 top 5 might be hard to crack if lively doesn't add more to his game. AD, Sabonis, jokic, bam, embiid plus there are guys like sengun wemby and chet who's also gunning for the top center spots in the future
He reminds me a lot of what Joakim Noah was doing for those bulls teams especially as a passer and knowing what to do with the ball when getting it in the high post. Most bigs struggle with that but he is almost always making the right decision, it’s fun to watch.
I didn't watch any Mavs games in the regular season, so the playoffs have been my first exposure to Lively. When I first saw him, with his stalk-of-broccoli-build, I pegged him as one of those non-physical, only-good-because-of-his-height types, but he plays with such physicality, high-motor, and suspiciously-always-in-the-right-place instinct while never trying to be more than what he is, which makes him the perfect complimentary piece to play with Luka and Kyrie. With Lively 19 and Luka 24, it's easy to see those two being inside/outside partners for the next several seasons at least. Very excited about Lively's future.
I think a huge help has been having Tyson chandler in his corner. The Mavs basically gave lively to him as a project. And lively said he constantly texts him questions all the time so he has such a willingness to learn
Lively has the team's trust and trusts the team. It's a treat to see the Mavs extend the treatment they gave Luka as a rookie - too many young players don't get given the chances to shine!
Man...this kid is so solid fundamentally. Note how he NEVER brings the ball down, keeps it up and high. Makes great crisp decisions. My only suggestion woudl be to get a bounce the ball routine before free throws. But wowsers...
One other important aspect of the lively Garfield combo that people don’t talk about enough is also how well they complement each other. No doubt Lively is and will be the better center in the future, but he does struggle at times, especially when it comes to getting his bucket. He’s such a pass first kind of guy that during the regular season he’d give up shots that you’d expect a center to take. Gifford on the other hand struggles with passing but has more of a scorers mentality. Gafford js more willing to force a shot than Lively is and I think that’s partly why Gafford ended up starting during the regular season. What’s really impressive is just how fast Lively learns, cause even though he used to struggle with knowing when to pass vs when to score we’ve been able to see him get better at making those decisions as the season ended and the playoffs go on. Lively is literally learning to be better while we watch this team play at a rate I’ve never seen any NBA player do before.
And he shoot pretty good 3p and middie in training. Imagine how much more of a danger he is next season when he improve on his FTs and Mavs coaching start to instruct him to shoot
I was also wondering the same way like "hey, isn't it bothering that Lively is just so good the way he plays for a rookie?" and it's crazier if for a rookie Dallas will win a championship definitely he's the 3rd most important player after Luka and Kyrie.
This Rookie already has High Basketball IQ, knows how to play basketball, Dude is humble like veteran players, good basic fundamental, Smart defensive presence, Also has offensive power with his dunk and Alley up make Kyrie and Luka have many option.. Lets get ur Chip before Wemby young man, be patient and keep learning and the games will come to you..
gafford's addition really made lively's impact a lot bigger. this isn't just luka's show anymore this is the mavs 2024 roster that will be fighting for finals
Some of these offensive sets look like a Draymond & Curry plays. So glad he learned so fast in high pressure situations. We don't see this every season. Doesn't have careless turnovers unlike his counterparts this past series. Shit percentage so high, that shit gotta be an NBA record for a rookie to go 100% fg% in the WCF. Hope he stays a Mav for years to come. Might cop his jersry cuz he'll probably a franchise player. ✊
I thought this at the beginning of the playoffs, but if gafford and lively can develop 1 or 2 post moves, The mavericks are gonna be super deadly for years.
He meshes well with what Luka wants to do… Playing with Luka elevates him and his game. And Mavs were desperate in finding a good big. He was simply put in the best position possible for a rookie.
My favorite thing about him is his timing. He often catchers the ball at the top of his jump, so he comes down with it where other Mavs rebounders will have the ball taken over the back by taller players or it will get slapped around where both teams have an equal shot at it even if you had rebounding position. It's like he's got stickum on his hands....he goes up for the rebound and there's no back taps or wrestling for it. It hits his hands and it's not going anywhere.

He has his duke brother Kyrie and Luka helping him shine as a role player. Easy money he is the new style center.
Wasnt aware how good this guy was until i watched the OKC series where he dominated Chet Holmgren inside the paint.
And he shoot pretty good 3p and middie in training. Imagine how much more of a danger he is next season when he improve on his FTs and Mavs coaching start to instruct him to shoot
He helped change our defense as a ROOKIE. Nico did a great job. He will only get better going forward
Bro channeling the spirit of his parents when he is on the court. RIP mama Lively
He fits perfectly with luca and kyrie
D-Live is such a young class act!!!🏀👌🏼
And now, 5 months later, he has added an efficient hook shot to his post game making him even more versatile offensively.
Aye man he’s really been slept on his impact as a rook is nuts
i love the story of d-live taking his game so seriously he was hitting 3's til he even sunk 12 in a row in practice
I was also wondering the same way like "hey, isn't it bothering that Lively is just so good the way he plays for a rookie?" and it's crazier if for a rookie Dallas will win a championship definitely he's the 3rd most important player after Luka and Kyrie.
You have some good analyses here. Lively was definitely a steal in the 2023 draft. I like him teamed up with Gafford too. They are both so mobile.
It all started 2nd half of the Season at Duke when he worked his way into the lottery
This Rookie already has High Basketball IQ, knows how to play basketball, Dude is humble like veteran players, good basic fundamental, Smart defensive presence, Also has offensive power with his dunk and Alley up make Kyrie and Luka have many option..
Lets get ur Chip before Wemby young man, be patient and keep learning and the games will come to you..
gafford's addition really made lively's impact a lot bigger.
this isn't just luka's show anymore
this is the mavs 2024 roster that will be fighting for finals
Subscribed, great analysis!
This man ended the series shooting 16/16 XDDD
He meshes well with what Luka wants to do…
Playing with Luka elevates him and his game. And Mavs were desperate in finding a good big.
He was simply put in the best position possible for a rookie.
He is a good fit and plays pretty well. Good for Dereck 🙌👏👏
D Live has no choice but to be a man. Life grabbed him by the collar and said your either gonna make it or not. He stepped up
Great content.
New sub. Keep up the great work
My favorite thing about him is his timing. It hits his hands and it's not going anywhere.
i heard you mention on the pod your channel was dieing and i realized i wasnt getting any of your videos on my feed (my recommended tab, not my subscriptions tab which i dont really check) so now im here to like and comment :D
