I was playing with one of my partners who uses the Clash 98. I noticed that he had 2 grams of lead at 12 and he mentioned that the feel and playability improved with this added weight. I then tried my partners racquet and noticed that with the added weight, the Clash 98 felt alot more solid when balls were hit off center and the response off the stringbed was pretty consistent. Compared to the V7 Blade 98 16x19, the Clash 98 is alot easier to use. Depth and spin come easy. I have decided after this additional trial to buy a Clash 98 as in between racquet with the Blade v7 98 16 x 19. It's amazing how customization helps improve playability of a racquet.
Is a great racquet - particularly if you are struggling with any kind of injury. I started with Pure Strike -> Yonex Ezone Tour -> Clash 98. Shoulder issue forced the changes. Added 4g of weight at the top, makes for much more stable volleys.....really enjoying the racquet - surprised i have enjoyed it so much. Thanks for the revisit! Was surprised at your initial review.....
Would love a classic racquet review of the original Prince 03 Tour! Managed to get one in great condition and it's a fantastic comfortable players frame with a huge sweetspot
The Clash 98 is a good in between racquet especially if you are nursing an arm injury. However, the feel and control and no where as good as the Blade v7 98 16 x 19. I also didn't see a big difference in power between the Blade and Clash 98. I did find better stability and comfort with the Blade. The Clash 98 appeared to be string and tension sensitive as well maybe due to the very low flex rating. IMO the Blade v7 line will be more appealing to wider audience of players who want a predictable plush feel. I am not saying that the Clash 98 is a bad racquet but it takes alot of time to get used as well as finding the right string set up. It also eats strings quicker than the Blade which is also something to consider if you don't string your own racquets.
I used the clash 98 while I was suffering from golfers elbow. It was terrific for that purpose. Now that I am pretty much better I have gone to the Yonex V-core pro 97 HD, maybe you can "re-visit" that one as well?
Thanks for the detailed explanation on the grip shape. I was leaning towards trying one of these out, until that point was raised. I’m definitely an old school eastern forehand guy.
Thanks I played the pro 100 and 98 with stiff polys and crossed with Wilson sensation. Yes not complete control, soft. The big difference for me was the amount of loop spin you could get on the 100 with the 16/20 bed. The 98 for flat spin and faster thru the air especially on serve
Nice soft feel and a really comfy stick, especially for those with arm issues. However, I’ve never been able to get my head to accept the clunky 24mm beam. It’s not just a fat beam, the triangular cross section is obese as heck, too!
I found sticking with round control strings in my Clash's got rid of the unpredictable launches, and also controlled the launch angle.(Kirschbaum Max Power on top of Wilson Revolve being my favourite mix)
I also have a lot of rackets, the Clash is now my favorite. A have a bit more grams at 12 and alu rough in the mains at 26 kg and Babolat gut at 25. Also some grams in the handle. Plays very well. The racket seems to adjust itself depending the force of striking the ball, perhaps due to the flexibility. For your tennisarm I recommend stretching your hand in order to get more strength in the extension muscles to get more balance in the strength flex vs extension muscles. Perhaps manipulation of the joint also can be of help because it can be a little distorted.
I added lead tape and over-grip to make the racket weight around 12.5oz. It is very at everything, serve, groundstroke, volley, even drop shot. It is a little bit less accurate than my previous racket (Wilson six-one 95) but it ease on my elbow for the whole play (up to 4hrs+ of doubles on Sunday morning) . I usually feel sore in my elbow around third set with the old racket and my play started to be affected..(I am a 4.5 level both singles and doubles)
Have two of the original versions and played with them for years. Fantastic players frame if you can find one... Control is absolutely supreme and WAY more spin than I ever expected from a 95 square inch head, It's not a typical 18x20 like most players frames and the center of string bed is actually quite open. Sweet spot is also substantial. It's a flexible frame of course so can string with full bed of Hyper G like I do (47lbs) or pretty much any poly and still feels soft. It's butter... :-) Hope you don't mind the Non-Tennisnerd review... I can't resist singing the praises of my favorite racquet...
Honestly the string selection seems weird, for such a powerfull 98inch frame I would try 4G Soft 1.25, Volkl Cyclone 1.30 black and Solinco Confidential 1.20. The 4G Soft is a rounded semi-firm poly with very good predictability, the Cyclone to evaluate the high launch angle of a spiky poly and the Confidential to see the response of the Racquet with a low launch angle 4 sided poly. All of them at 53lbs, with such a low stiffness raquect it would still feel fine.
The Clash 98 plays very differently with Multi and poly strings. It is also very tension sensitive. I tried LUX Smart 40lbs, Tecnifibre Triax 55lbs and now Solinco Confidental 16L at 50lb. Confidential at 50lbs was perfect for me. I added 3g on each side 3 and 9 o'clock and 2g on the throat. Total 8g. Plays much better with the added lead.
@Tennisnerd I bought this racket from TW after a couple of great demo sessions in my local tennis club where the racket felt head light and maneuverable. I got the racket and it weights 331g strung (opposed to reported 326g) and after adding an overgrip and dampener it is already 338g (8HL) which seems to be 8 grams more than yours with same equipment added. That's crazy. This always seem to happen to me when I buy a new racket. I tried to buy the one I demoed but they were not yet ready to sell the demo racket. Probably should have waited for it..
Bought this to replace my Radical Pro because of my arm problems. My only complaint for this racquet is the grip shape. Even though I hit with a semi-western forehand, this grip felt a little uncomfortable at first. I use a 4 1/4 grip but it honestly felt a little bit bigger than that.
Thank you for the re-review, and listening to our requests. @tennisnerd - Curious to hear your opinion - which one would you pick up for your own day to day play - Blade v7 16x19 or Clash 98? I used to swear in Blade v7 and really loved it, but have actually converted to Clash 98. More spin, more power, good stability, almost similar precision, decent feel, and unmatched comfort. Clash 98 is a great racquet, as you say, for a modern player.
I own a clash 98 but have primarily switched over to the Head Gravity Tour. The Clash line, to me, requires the player to really submit to the racquet and how it plays best. It's not a racquet that fits perfectly with my game, which is a fairl even split between heavy topsin groundstrokes and attacking tennis. I have found the Clash line great when drilling, hitting a series of balls in about the same spot. But when playing, it can be a bit challenging.
from time to time every racket feels different depending on the current fit anf strings setup...maybe except Wilson PS97 with the natural gut hybrid....
A bit unrelated, but are you still hitting with the Heysil Tour 98? I've been mainly hitting with the Blade 98 18x20 but it can be a bit sluggish at times and your review caught my eye. Really interested in trying it out once it gets back in stock.
If you had to choose one racket to keep forever out of all these what would it be: Head G360+ Speed MP Yonex Vcore 98 (2021) Dunlop CX 400 Tour Prince Textreme Tour 100 (310) Prince Phantom 100x 305
I have tried all of these minus the dunlop. For me it would be between both the prince and its a very close call. I have both of these in my bag at the moment I am leaning towards the textreme tour 310 for the extra power I get out of it but there are days when I play with the prince phantom 100x 305 (with added lead) and it plays amazingly well. Might keep both where the textreme is my main racket and the phantom 100x the arm friendly option if and when I need it
@@TariqSaleem how would you compare the comfort and the free power of TT100 310 against 100x 305? I've heard that TT100 is much stiffer but the comfort is still there. Also do you think switching from 300g racquet to 310g one would make a huge difference? I currently use Yonex Ezone Dr 100 and even though the racket weight is 300g unstrung, the TT100 has a lower swingweight and is more headlight which I'm really curious about.
Idk I'd rather get a ProKennex as they have similar flex + extra tech for arm comfort, BUUUUUUUT (the big one here) they have a greater selection of head size and beam width which offers more flavors: from super control to more spin and free power. Which the Clash doesn't offer as the thinnest beam width is around 24.5 mm which is not at all a control frame.
I played with the Clash 98 and I would prefer it more stiffer. Recently played a match with someone who hit the ball very hard and I was not able to control the ball but overall the racquet is a good one
@@johnbrondumnet that would be great, I'd also add Prince Textreme Tour 100 (310). There's just so many good rackets now, that it's really difficult to choose one especially when you can't demo them.
Hi, I have the Wilson clash 100 and i have to change my strings, I use multi but i want to try poly because I want to improve spin. can you suggest me which strings to try? Thank you, your contents are great!
I put 2 grams of lead tape on the top of the racket and it feels much more solid. If you counter balance it a tiny bit I found it didn't change the playability of the racket too much.
@@PhilipFullerton Thanks for your advice. Sometimes when I add lead tape, the racquet plays stiffer because it won't bend at much. I always put the lead tape at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions as that enhances stability and does not affect racquet head speed as much. I prefer a more evenly balance racquet because it makes it easier to hit flat and topspin 1-handed backhands.
@@tedneanderthal7373 oh when I said stable I meant it feels stiffer I guess. I heard if you put lead at 2 and 10 it shouldn't make too much difference to the way it plays so maybe try that.
