    Director: Ricky Tognazzi
Stars: Bob Hoskins, Carlo Cecchi, Roberto Citran
    Italy, 2003
    St Peter’s, Rome 3rd June 1963.
The square is filled with people, and filled with the chaos of an emotionally charged event. Something extraordinary is happening. Giovanni XXIII is dying. Thousands of people in the square at St Peter’s, and millions around the world are gathering to pray for the Pope in his final hours. An old priest is making his way through the hoards of people gathered in the square, where Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and Christians are united in prayer. As if a member of their family were dying, they are suffering the pain and the ineviteble grief of a lost one. The ancient Priest carries in his hand a letter a letter so important that it must reach the Pope before it is too late.
John XXIII was Pope for only 4 years, seven months and six days, from the 28th October to the 3rd June 1963, in a period of profound change, and during a time which produced the most significant events of the 20th Century. The world was caught up in the precarious politics of The Cold War. In 1959 Fidel Castro overthrew the Batista dictatorship in Cuba and enforced his communist regime a short distance from the capitalist world. In the same year, the Dalai Lama fled from Tibet and broke off relations with the USSR and Cina. In 1961 the Berlin Wall was built; a tragic monument of ignorance and ideological hatred. At the same time the soviet astronaut, Yuri Gagarin successsfully completed the first ever orbit around the earth, begining the way for future space travel. From the 18th to the 28th October, 1962, the US and USSR threatened the start of a third world war when they confronted each other over the missile crisis in Cuba. In 1963 the american military invastion into Vietnam escalated, and at the end of that same year, on the 22nd November, John F Kennedy was assassinated.
In this extraordinary period of history, of high international tension, Pope John launched a powerful and incisive messsage of peach to the whole world, and the Church turned to him as it had never done before inthe history of christianity. He was the Pope who challenged the power of the Church with his second Vatican Council, a revolutionary event which caused the Catholic Church to re-examine itself and its historical hypocracies that had moved it further and further from the learnings of Christ, as well as from the needs of modern day man. The Second Vatican Council would bring the Church closer to the 20th Century, and closer to the rapid and fundamental changes that had taken place in the last century. Using the power of television and radio, as Kennedy and Kruscev had done, he enforced his campaign for world peace upon the world - a message which today is seen as a determining factor in bringing about the end of the cold war.

It brought memories of the first time I heard the mass in English! I guess I was nearly ready for my confirmation. Journal of a Soul Pope John XXIII was published in 1980. I only guess my godmother gave it to me, I can’t remember. She was Mae and a devout Christian. When I think of the impact the changes this pope made not only for Catholics like myself it is a reaffirmation of my love for my family. I kept this book at my bedside off and on for this past twenty years. I moved many times pack and unpacked it. I would just dust it off and start again to read of his everyday life. Now , suddenly , today after millions of internet search’s I deliberately “googled” his holiness. This movie was so moving. I will pass it along to my friends. Thank you for posting it.

When John XXIII was later elevated to the College of Cardinals, he insisted upon receiving the red hat from the atheist and notoriously anti-clerical socialist Vincent Auriol, President of the country of France, whom he had described as “an honest socialist.” He knelt before him.
“No one can be at the same time a good Catholic and a true socialist.”

@@John-jf8lw I honestly don’t know what John XXIII’s politics was, except he wanted peace and reconciliation. You have to understand just how deeply divided France was during WWII, especially under Nazi occupation, with many openly collaborating with the Nazi occupiers.
John XXIII was sent there after the war as papal nuncio (the diplomatic equivalent of an ambassador), and he was trying, in that capacity, to bring about a reconciliation, including that between the political left and right (that would be participants in the Vichy French collaborationist regime). In this, John XXIII was quite adept, in part because of who he was.
That’s likely the reason why he asked the president to place his cardinal’s hat. The ceremony was likely not a replacement for the consistory with Pope Pius XII, and I doubt that John did what he did without Pius’ knowledge and permission.
A diplomatic gesture of this kind hardly means that John was a socialist or atheist. It is a sign of John’s desire to bring people-ALL people, together, despite disagreements. He also attempted, as pope, to try to bring about improvements of relations with the Soviet Union, and to find ways in which two very different worlds (the free world and the Communist world) to coexist in peace.
Bear in mind that the two sides came perilously close to a Third World War, which would have been calamitous, possibly leading to human extinction. Certainly President Kennedy, who never got to meet John XXIII, shared similar views after the showdowns over Berlin and Cuba, and Kennedy stated as much in his famous speech at American University in June of 1963, the same month in which John XXIII died.
I doubt that John was inspired by Marx, or Khrushchev, but rather by Jesus’ teaching about loving one’s enemies.

    • @John-jf8lw
      @John-jf8lw Рік тому +1

@@johncronin9540 Fair point, but John XXIII started the revolution of the "modernist" Catholic teaching that was carried out by Paul VI. Yes, it sounds nice that we should "love one another" or respect each other's religion and so forth, but like it or not, that's NOT Catholic teaching. Jesus wanted to establish one, universal Church - not "churches." The fact that John XXIII and all of these other "popes" since then have preached respect for all religions (including the "religion" of Marxism) is deeply disturbing since that's exactly what previous Popes preached against prior to the 1960s. All I'm saying is, don't be fooled by Roncalli's folksy, ah-shucks, self-deprecating appearance. St. Paul condemned people for not believing in Christ. The fact that one of Roncalli's first statements was to NOT condemn other "faiths" and the fact that he didn't denounce Marxism like previous popes did (particularly Pope Leo XIII) because he didn't want to "offend" someone is alarming.
Think about Our Lady of Fatima. What was her message? She urged the Pope to consecrate Russia. Why? Are you going to tell me that Marxism, which became Communism, didn't have something to do with it? Do you think it was just a coincidence that the Bolshevik Revolution, which allowed an atheist dictator to spread this radical "religion' of Marxist-Leninism, happened to occur that same year?
Sadly Pope Pius XII didn't do it until 1952 when communism grew immensely and spread to other countries - particularly China. So again, to read that John XXIII didn't condemn this evil "religion" and instead, gave it the benefit of the doubt, should make your stomach turn.
But, it's your choice. You believe what you want.

As he lacked in everything, he took to bestial and barbaric means, which is the force of arms. Thus, he introduced and promulgated his message with robberies, murders and blood shedding, destroying those who did not want to receive it and with the same means, his ministers conserve this today, until God placates His anger and destroys this pestilence from the earth.”

I only knew about Pope St. John XXIII this year. I really admire him. I love how he was very humorous, humble and holy. You could see the actual video where he received the Shah of Persia and he didnt look sick or weak at all. He was talking and laughing with the Shah and meeting many people. Despite his old age, he still was welcoming and gave his best to do his Job. It’s sad that even today, a lot of traditional catholics don’t like him since he was the one who started Vat. II. They blame everything on Vat II. But I think he got use to people opposing him. Also, because of Vat. II, there are many catholic converts in Asia and Africa, although I can’t say the same for Catholic converts in the US. Still, Pope John XXIII, was a sincere Pope. He tried his best. He really is The Good Pope. St. John XXIII, please pray for us. 🙏💜🙏

Ireen Zee well said Irene. No one but Jesus is perfect. Sadly too many Catholics and non Catholics think Popes should be perfect because they are considered 'Infallible'. Because they don't understand what that means. The Pope is the the Spiritual leader for Catholics world-wide, because the Vatican is considered a country within a country, the Pope is the Leader of a country. When I read St. John XXIII's biography and watch the movies, he thinks very carefully about his decisions. He truly was an Ecumenical Pope. He truly was the Good Pope.

Some people are angry why he didn’t reveal the third secret of Fatima and called it disobeyance to the Blessed Mother. He has his reasons I’m sure and again God knows this. No one is perfect and No Pope is perfect. At least St. John XXIII tried his best to do his job as Pope, which was such a big job...

"We realize today how blind we have been throughout the centuries and how we did not appreciate the beauty of the Chosen People or the features of our favored brothers. We are aware of the divine mark of Cain placed upon our forehead. In the course of centuries our brother, Abel, has been lying bleeding and in tears on the ground through our fault, only because we had forgotten Thy love. Forgive us our unjustified condemnation of the Jews. Forgive us that by crucifying them we have crucified You for the second time. Forgive us. We did not know what we were doing."
      - John XXIII
“... by the death of our Redeemer, the New Testament took the place of the Old Law, which had been abolished… on the gibbet of His death, Jesus made void the Law with its decrees [Ephesians 2:15]... establishing the New Testament in His blood shed for the whole human race. ‘To such an extent, then,’ says St. Leo the Great, speaking of the Cross of our Lord, ‘was there effected a transfer from the Law to the Gospel, from the synagogue to the Church, from many sacrifices to one Victim, that, as our Lord expired, that mystical veil … of the temple … was rent violently from top to bottom.’ On the Cross, then the Old Law died, soon to be buried and to be a bearer of death.”

I loved that Pope. I began High School when Vatican II began. I was taught by Dominican Nuns and we studied the regular reports of what was happening in the Council on a daily basis in religion class. We learned about the history of the traditions of the Church, we studied the Bible which was rare for Catholics but no longer because of him, we explored the basics of Christianity and Catholicism, and we learned what he was trying to do by calling the Council. The movie showed me how difficult it was for him. I didn’t know. I only was excited about his compassion and inclusion of all peoples. He reached out to the Orthodox Church who broke away in the 4th century ( I think), he reached out to the Jews to whom we owe our roots, and he taught love and compassion. Believe me he was not the cause of discord in the Church it was there for decades if not longer. We the average person were not aware because theologians and other writers were not permitted to express their views. I recommend reading The Devine Millie by Fr. Teillad De Chardain SJ. It was published after is death in 1965. It is profoundly spiritual. But it presents a relationship of a human being in relationship to God not traditionally presented by the Church at that time. But it is very beautiful. I thank God for him and those nuns that taught me during that very exciting time.

Martha Wissmann, I would strongly advise You to seriously and truly investigate the TRUE history of the Catholic Church starting the Conclave of 1858 to the present day of 2020, because I am most certain that You would discover historic FACTS that would PROVE exactly the opposite of what You are believing now. My suggestion will most certainly disturb Your present tranquillity, but... if this is the price to get at the TRUTH You should be willing, without hesitation, to pay for it, for there is NOT salvation for our Souls separated from the TRUTH! Thanks for Your kind attention. The Holy Spirit may guide You in Your search for TRUTH!

"Many rabbis and religious leaders believe that Jesus cannot be the Messiah because he did not fulfill the job requirements: “Judaism does not believe that Jesus was the Messiah because he did not fulfill any messianic prophecies. ‘Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, nor shall they learn war anymore’” (Isaiah 2:4).8 Far from establishing world peace, Jesus himself said that he came to divide “father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother” (Luke 12:53). In fact, there has been more bloodshed in the name of Jesus rather than in the name of peace. How then can anyone argue that Jesus is the promised Messiah according to the Jewish Scriptures?"

“For this, it must be clearly understood that Bishops are deprived of the right and power of ruling, if they deliberately secede from Peter and his successors; because, by this secession, they are separated from the foundation on which the whole office must rest. They are therefore outside the edifice itself; and for this very reason, they are separated from the fold, whose leader is the Chief Pastor; they are exiled from the Kingdom, the keys of which given by Christ to Peter alone.”

John XXIII appointed a 33rd-degree Freemason (and close friend) Baron Yves Marsaudon as head of the French branch of the Knights of Malta, a Catholic lay order, when he was the nuncio to France. Marsaudon also claimed that Roncalli became a 33rd-degree Mason.
“Its consequences, the sect of Freemasons grew with a rapidity beyond conception. And in the course of a century and a half, grew, until it came to be able, by means of fraud and of audacity, to gain such entrance into every rank of the State as to seem to be almost ruling its power.”

Cardinal Angelo Roncalli and Cardinal Giovanni Montini played major roles in saving Jewish lives during the Second World War. Like the majority of other Catholic leaders, parishes, and convents, they were acting under the orders of Pope Pius XII. His efforts saved 860,000 Jewish lives, a fact recognized by Golda Meir, Chaim Weizmann, Nahum Goldmann, and other Jewish leaders and organizations.
Roncalli later became Pope John XXIII; Montini became his successor, Pope Paul VI.

A very good movie describing the life of a remarkable man. It seams that the pope selection follows a scedule where every other conclave choses a jovial man with a bright heart aswell as mind, followed by a more academic man who focus on the curia. Every pope is worth respect, but some of them shines through as being remarkable human beings. John XXIII were such an inspiring human being.

    Proverbs 21
    Whoever pursues righteousness and love
    finds life, prosperity and honor.
One who is wise can go up against the city of the mighty
and pull down the stronghold in which they trust.
Those who guard their mouths and their tongues
    keep themselves from calamity.
The proud and arrogant person-“Mocker” is his name-
    behaves with insolent fury.
The craving of a sluggard will be the death of him,
because his hands refuse to work.
All day long he craves for more,
but the righteous give without sparing.
The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable-
how much more so when brought with evil intent!
    A false witness will perish,
but a careful listener will testify successfully.
The wicked put up a bold front,
but the upright give thought to their ways.
There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan
that can succeed against the Lord.
The horse is made ready for the day of battle,
but victory rests with the Lord.

Not Catholic? Here is true teachings
The holy universal Church teaches that it is not possible to worship God truly except in Her and asserts that all who are outside of Her will not be saved.” -Pope Saint Gregory the Great (590-604)
“By heart we believe and by mouth confess the one Church, not of heretics but the Holy Roman, Catholic, and Apostolic Church outside which we believe that no one is saved.” -Pope Innocent III, Eius exemplo, 18 December 1208 (DS 423)
“Certainly many remarkable authors, adherents of the true philosophy, have taken pains to attack and crush this strange view. But the matter is so self-evident that it is superfluous to give additional arguments. It is impossible for the most true God, who is Truth Itself, the best, the wisest Provider, and the Rewarder of good men, to approve all sects who profess false teachings which are often inconsistent with one another and contradictory, and to confer eternal rewards on their members. For we have a surer word of the prophet, and in writing to you We speak wisdom among the perfect; not the wisdom of this world but the wisdom of God in a mystery. By it we are taught, and by divine faith we hold one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and that no other name under heaven is given to men except the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth in which we must be saved. This is why we profess that there is no salvation outside the Church.” -Pope Leo XII, Ubi Primum, #14, 5 May 1824
“You see, dearly beloved sons and venerable brothers, how much vigilance is needed to keep the disease of this terrible evil from infecting and killing your flocks. Do not cease to diligently defend your people against these pernicious errors. Saturate them with the doctrine of Catholic truth more accurately each day. Teach them that just as there is only one God, one Christ, one Holy Spirit, so there is also only one truth which is divinely revealed. There is only one divine faith which is

If Pope John the xxiii was so great, why did he not release the 3rd secret of Fatima that was to be released by 1960? Sr Lucia had written the 3rd secret down and it was given to the pope.
Pope John XXIII was head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State from 28 October 1958 to his death in 1963. Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was his baptism name.

    • @chrisampere

They did not release it because the third secret of Fatima is all about the great apostacy that will occur to the church that will begin from the highest position of the church which is the pope. I do not believe from all good comments here. They were blind of seeing the truth that John xxiii is a antipope and not a saint. All popes now are destroying the faith from john xxiii to present. They do not profess the true faith. By their action you will know them.

Most popes are rather coldish standofish academics and curia types, and very few are the true warmhearted pastoral types. Of all his successors I think the current Pontiff Francis is the one who comes nearest to John XXIII's ideas, worldview and spirit.

    • @ireenzee1882
      @ireenzee1882 3 роки тому +1

I like Pope John XXIII and Pope Francis. Indeed they are more of the pastoral type while Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was more academic. But for me, Pope John Paul II was a great blend of academic and pastoral. Of course no Pope is perfect. The first Pope appointed by Jesus Christ, Peter, was definitely not perfect. Some say Paul would have been a better Pope but Jesus chose Peter for a reason. Again, no pope is perfect. What’s important is that they genuinely tried their best to do such a difficult job, that is being the Pope.

They say he didn't reveal the 3rd secret of Fatima during his Pontificate. From Sr. Lucia's diary, the 3rd secret should be revealed whichever is earlier between 1960 or her death. I was just extremely curious when it is the mother of God who requested for it but wasn't obeyed?

@@josephvirrey196, well, the original schemas they threw away still look good. But what became of it eventually was rewritten by people who the Church had condemned for heresy during the past decades. These people were invited back by John XXIII, knowing full well that they had not changed their mind about anything. It's hard to find a thing about Vatican II that isn't wrong, heretical, confusing, meaningless, ambiguous or contradicted somewhere. Equally hard to find anything said for it that isn't somehow misleading, equivocal or intended to deceive. Pure gloating and subjective opinions aside.
