Hey guys please don't comment saying " ITS CAVALRY NOT CALVARY", or your comment will just be removed.
I know historically speaking this battle had a large fog, but for the sake of your viewing pleasure and the video I recorded the battle without too much fog as you wouldn't have been able to see anything otherwise. Hope you enjoy the video

Romans did not have advantage, roman army of 3rd century BC was mostly made of non-professional conscripts, and led by ambitious politicians who did not need to have any military experience to lead an army.
Hannibals army was veteran one from Iberia who had professional officer corps, and used combined arms tactics (combination of infantry and cavalry and ranged units, while romans were mostly massive infantry with weak cavalry and no dedicated ranged units). They also had advanced metallurgy. Hannibals army in the beginning of war was simply better than anything that romans could throw at him at that point so it's no wonder that he won battles, Romans would resort to fabian strategy and observe and copy hannibals tactics and adapt to them during forward stages of war. That was gratest roman strength, adaptiveness and ability to learn from mistakes. They did have manpower advantage, that one is correct.

Hannibal wasn't able to finish the Romans off because 1- Carthage didn't fully support him( Hanno the great for instance)
2- Carthaginians were pretty much terrible at other fronts, most importantly Iberia. As Hannibal kept winning in Italian peninsula, other commanders kept losing. Sardinia could have been easily liberated( or reconquered) by Carthaginians if it wasn't for stupidity of Hiostus to fight in the front ranks instead of commanding it from a safe distance.

Absolutely outstanding. I love the fact that so much research has obviously gone into getting the details of arms and armour as accurate as possible. I've always been an ancient warfare fanatic, and everything here looks exactly right for the period. If this was made as a Hollywood movie, they'd have the Romans in iron lorica segmentata that wouldn't appear for another two centuries. God knows how they'd portray the Carthaginians, but I've no doubt it would be equally inaccurate.

I read from a good source, it being early in the morning, the Carthaginian army was obscured by fog that shrouded the lake and the heights above the beach the Romans marched along. And that they swept down on the legion from those fog obscured heights and destroyed all, the vanguard only escaped the slaughter because they kept going, fighting their way through.

I guess there are different interpretations re: how this battle was fought, but I have been under the impression it was more a real ambush; that the hilly and tree covered place where Hannibal's army positioned itself was a lot closer to the lake than shown here; that the Romans never had a chance to form up into their usual formations but were almost instantly overwhelmed...Hannibal's men also had the advantage of an early morning mist that helped conceal their presence and aided in the confusion that overwhelmed the Romans...

Excellent work but some crucial things were missing:
    1. lack of a low hanging mist that aided the Carthagians with their cover,
    2. the Roman vanguard didn't charge into Hannibal's heavy infantry but stumbled upon them literally due to the mist,
    3. there was a strong earthquake nearby but the fighting was so fierce that none of the combatants noticed it,
    4. some Romans who tried to swim managed to stay afloat, begged for mercy but were killed then and there,
    5. lastly, the Roman General Flamminius who was hated by the Gauls had his body ripped to pieces so much so that Hannibal wasn't able to find any trace of the consul to give a proper burial

I'm assuming that the victorious armies collected all of the arms and clothing of the losers. Re-supplying 20,000 men with swords, spears, helmets and clothes must require production on an industrial scale. And how do you feed a 20,000 man army?

Trasummenus was not a battle. The Romans were caught in line of march. They thought what they saw in the far distance was the rear of the Carthaginians that had been pillaging and burning the Etrurian countryside. Thus they rushed to catch them laden with plunder. The Roman force was not any easy prey as they routed the Carthaginian troops that were blockading the farhest end of the road. Had the army have the chance to form in battle the outcome were very different. How could they imagine the troops fleeing from them in the distance far away were in fact at hand hidden in the fog?

Was it hubris or home team advantage that made the Romans so susceptible to Hannibal's tactics? The differene is ultimately psychologial. Hanniabal's intelligence gathering and scouting is palpably superior to the Roman. He understood the martial and political makeup of Rome. The limits of glory are on full display. Easy for me to say but true nonetheless. Maybe if Roman generals deployed their scouts better then perhaps these glaring defeats could have been avoided. I don't believe that as Roman culture had at it's core a naive belief in it's inherant superiority, always a bad sign. Then again, fighting at home against what they might have seen as a ragtag army was the reason for this. All would be imperialist beware. Pride is a leveller of men and armies.

And to be double 25k is ridiculous and so hard to put everything that took to keep an army that size on the campaign path for the entire duration of the campaign... Logistics must have been so impressive for elite nations such as Rome. Even barbarian nations that were able to match or even out number the size of the Roman armies at times... The amount of food, fresh drinkable WATER, medical supplies, and everything else needed for the massive armies..... Incredible
