Emperor: Battle for Dune is by no means a bad game, but rather suffered from a case of bad timing. Just like the Dune movie was eclipsed by Alien, Emperor was eclipsed by the much more popular and engaging Red Alert 2. While somewhat inferior in gameplay to RA2, Emperor was quite innovative for its time, introducing a non-linear campaign, territory and reinforcement system, besides from having the most advanced graphics of an RTS till' the upcoming of CnC Generals. An underrated classic, IMO.
Frank Herbert wanted an antagonist with a "harsh" sounding name for Dune and he got the name "Harkonnen" from a Californian phonebook. Little did he know that the name he picked, thinking it was Russian, was a Finnish surname "Härkönen". The name can be loosely translated to "Those of the Oxen". I find it slightly humorous to think that Harkonnen would speak finnish, since it can either sound like Tolkiens Elvish(which is partly based on finnish) or "aggressive and rugged" like the Harkonnen are portrayed in the films.
imagine patrolling in the dunes of arrakis and the first sign of an enemy attack is the deafening cry of "PERKELE" sounding out over the rugged desert wastes.

A Härkönen spice harvester driver has gotten out of the cabin and is cursing his ass off at the Ponsse spice harvester that has suffered a drive belt failure in the middle of a prime harvesting stint. Yes, I'm finnish.

I don't agree. I love all three faction musics, but damn, stuff like Atreides Ride the Worm and Ordos Not an option ,Sabotage, the Strategist blew every Harkonnen track out of the water far as I am concerned :D
Opinions Opinions... I'll say this: Every track is well made, and in my case, Harkonnen has only just started to grow on me. I only listened to the Ordos earlier, as that was the only faction I played in my youth. I'd boot it up, but I lack installation keys, so I might just forward the cost and get another CD set. I'll say one thing, it's worth it.
Frank Klepacki performance were good but nothing compared to Arkenstone, he totally stole the show, but this game is criminally underrated, it's one of the best RTS.

To be fair, this Harkonnen music is only played (a) during the civil war battle on Giedi Prime (b) when invading the other homeworlds and, most importantly, (c) when fighting against the Emperor Worm. Evil and ruthless as Harkonnen may be, i guess they do have their moments, esp. when fighting against the far more evil Emperor Worm.
I've been searching for this soundtrack for the past 10 years. It doesn't show up in any of the regular OSTs for Emperor: BFD, and I had no idea what the song was called. By far, the coolest song in the entire game. It combines the best of the Atreides theme with the best of the Harkonnen theme. Friggin love it.
@@TheMaghorn Flag was Black and Green, red hawk was their crest and Leto's nickname by the emperor was "The Red Duke" And yes, Harkonens wore blue uniforms and had blue symbols. That said, there is no need for baddies to be red. There was plenty of games where good guys were red, even some by the same developer (ex: Supreme Commander, Tiberium series, Red Alert...)
I hated it whenever playing skirmish or online, only a few standard songs were played. Only when playing singleplayer everything was there, and the further you got the cooler it got..
I love the lasers during the song. As if the big Harkonnen invasion just started, marching through the desert killing lone Fremen Warriors or Atreides/Ordos troops, but even besides that destroying small to medium sized armies easily from time to time!
If I had my way, I would make a “Dune 5” game. The Ordos would be replaced by House Corrino, with the explanation being that while the 3 houses reluctantly joined forces to defeat the Emperor Worm, the late Emperor Corrino’s heir led an assault on the Ordos homeworld (since the Ordos were responsible for the Emperor’s death). House Ordos’ remnants would be a subfaction, and the Corrino would be the new “powerhouse” faction (unsurprisingly, since they have the Sardaukar).
@@robbert6923 I would have the Atreides have Bagpipes and Celtic-themed music, the Harkonnens would maintain their industrial/orchestral metal music, and the Corrinos would have more warrior chanting music… think Norse war cries/Mongolian throat singing. Wow. This is just pure genius, one of my favorite (if not THE favorite) tracks among game music. Beautiful and badass at the same time. Not that I would use those words to describe Harkonnen though :p They're so evil it's comical. Klepacki and Arkenstone made them sound way cooler than they really are.
This will play when your charred corpse lies on the ground, broken and defeated, your lands burned down, your ideals extinguished, and your skull crushed under the iron threads of one of the thousands of tanks proudly bearing the emblem of house Harkonnen. The spice must flow, and if to flourish in the sands of the desert it requires to be watered with the blood of your kin, so it will.
I'm sure that videos of that game will be a lot better than my explanations. But yeah, its like Dune, with space battles, purchasable upgrades and tech levels. Also heros for each side. Han, Luke, Bobba, Vader. They respawn when defeated after a while. Heros have, like normal units, special abilities. Force- choke and lightning as examples. You also have the ability to play a campaign for each side, that tells a story of what happened after the Clone Wars, leading to the events of " A New Hope ". Also, unlike Dune, you can push the campaign aside and simply conquer the SW Universe without to fear to get killed by your superiors like it happens in EbfD. The main resource in that game is Credits, acquired by conquering planets and placing mines on them. Each planet has a different amount of space for buildings. Weapons factories, tech labs, barracks and stuff. But also capturable buildings where you need to send in some infantery (so they are useful), in order to take control of said structure. It's expansion "Forces Of Corruption", enhances this game even more with new functions, such as the ability to change the position of buildings on the planets to your own liking, or the ability to send a single space unit as scouters, before the main battle fleet arrives to fight the battle. Also, you get to play with Darth Vaders SSD ' Executor '. The expansion brings a new faction into the fray named " Zann Consortium ", an enemy to both the Empire and the rebels with a campaign to play. Thats about it... I should become a game reviewer like Angry Joe xD Final Verdict: 8/10
GLX Lynx Star Wars Empire at War was alright in its day. That it's Star Wars is most of what its got going for it. Replayed it recently, it was difficult to enjoy past the initial missions. The expansion, which I hadn't played and was what prompted me to pick the game up again, was actually worse... not the plot, but the gameplay as the new faction. Rather janky and overall unenjoyable. I quit the game then, something I rarely do. After replaying the original campaigns already (a rushed Rebel campaign after the more enjoyable Imperial one), I was having no fun by then. The game is mostly good in its parts, some more than others, but as the whole puzzle it's somewhat poorly constructed. Probably the greatest one flaw is forcing us to take countless generic battles into our own hands because the AI will lose them. Mostly defensive battles where the invading forces will usually outnumber your garrisons. The space battles are the most fun, impressive even, but even those begin to tire, generic engagement after generic engagement. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone save Star Wars enthusiasts.

Well, House Harkonnen is evil because of the corrupted "League of Nobles" and (unfortunately) the backstabbing from Vorian to Abulurd. Yes, Ulf Harkonnen (patriarch of this house) was cruel, navie, gruff and defiant, but his wife Katarina and second son Xavier weren't. Vorian and Xavier were great friends and this last one sacrificed his live, even as the history remembered him like a "traitor". What Vorian Atreides told to Abulurd Harkonnen in his judgement begun the bloodfeud: a stupid war.
Agree, for some strange reason, the entire Dune universe is much less popular then it should be. The world detail in the original books are at a Tolkien-level ! A badly made movie, cheap tv series, and now Brian's not so great books can be minor cause, but still... I suspect some sort of conspiracy behind Dune universe's lack of attention. Maybe the books's teachings are too dreadful for our oppressive governments.

Red alert 2 is some of Klepackis weakest work. The original c and c and covert operations ost and the dune 2000 ones are a thousand times better, imho
i liked some soundtracks from Ordos and Atreides, but i REALLY liked almost ALL soundtracks from Harkonnen!

i like how in the books Harkonnens's symbol was a blue griffin, and they wore blue uniform :D, while Atreides got red hawk.
it made more sense for the good guys to be blue and the baddies red in a game setting

In the original Dune game the Atreides are red and the Harkonnen are blue.
