I've just finished reading it. Absolutely outstanding. This is a MUST read for any budding bookworm and especially for anyone interested in Aztec/mesoamerica history.
This was like the first longer book I ever read and it's still one of my absolute favorites. Even though I read it 20-25 years ago, I still remember most of it. Such a great book, a shame it's not more popular.
I know some of the stuff mentioned was pretty brutal. One of the most disturbing things I can think of was when they had to sacrifice a toddler by drowning. The way they had to do it is he need to drown in water but not by water. They put him in a mask with oil and put him in a tube. The boy drown or I guess was suffocated by the mask of oil in a tube of water, I think it was for a harvest ritual ( I could be wrong ). Well anyway that was one out of the disturbing things practiced that kinda messed with my head.
@@theprinceofhwy5022 Between this and what they did to his sister, etc my God... Not to mention all the quasi explicit pornography, wtf imagine hearing about " fountain women" at twelve lol There are endless very graphic and violent moments in the book sometimes I wonder if Gary Jennings is okay in the head... But it truly is an amazing book, there´s nothing like it frankly it kept you on the edge and took you far to a place of incredible mysteries. Outstanding book.
found this book 2nd hand in market the other day and i’m starting to read it… it seems most review vids on youtube are in spanish…which is not a surprise, but other than your vid in english, thats it
To me that chapter broke the whole book. I love it but I absolutely can't recommend anyone read it without saying to skip that chapter entirely. It was fucking disgusting and only convinced me the author is sick in the head
@Ross Bringhurst that's fair, I can understand why one would want to skip that part. However, I think it's really important to Mixtli's arc and I feel like it rounds out the human sacrifice motif that's present throughout the book.
This book has been my favorite book I have ever read. I love it and I love Zyanya. Greetings from Mexico.
My name is Zyanya :3 my dad named me after the character in the book!
Ive read this book a few times cover to cover too. I agree with you, I love this book too. Great story telling. Just an EPIC book!
This book was amazing ! I read this book in 1982/83 And have read it more than once. I named my daughter Zyanya because of this book.
That's Awesome! It's amazing how this book touched people's lives.
MY DAD TOO
Hi I’m zyanya also !
Phenomenal book, a masterpiece. I've read it about 3 times, and would again.
The only book I ever read from cover to cover over a non-sleep weekend. Rich in the lessons of life. Mixli was a metaphor to all of us
First read Aztec about twenty five years ago, and it has influenced my life, rightly or wrongly, more than any other.

I couldn't agree more

i read the book twice, and it played out like the best movie ive ever watched in my head
I don't read books. But this is the book I've only read. And I've read it twice. I know a girl named Zyanya. We have been friends for half my life.
Awesome book. Also one of my faves that I’ve read twice!
Nice! I'm about due for a second read myself.
Red it back in 95 as a 12 year old. Brutal brutal book. Marked me for life.

Hahaha. I don't think Gary Jennings was okay in the head at all, but that's why he made a masterpiece. Sometimes crazy is the secret ingredient.
When he stumbled upon the impaled woman during his travels in the Northern desert - that was brutal.
Best book ever.
Yes! I do agree!
this is my favorite book of all tiem
I love all the Aztec books by Garry Jennings
There are only 2 by Jennings.
If you liked this try Sacajawea by Anna Lee Waldo
Awesome book!

It's been awhile since I had this baby in my arms. Great book, I highly recommend it! Happy reading everyone! 😌
This book rules
The Maya never had an empire
BIG SPOILER
What happens to Nochipa is probably the most horrific thing I've ever read in any book.
