“I will make Egyptian fight against Egyptian-
    brother against brother,
    neighbor against neighbor,
    city against city,
    province against province.
    The Egyptians will lose heart,
and I will confuse their plans.
They will plead with their idols for wisdom
and call on spirits, mediums, and those who consult the spirits of the dead.
    I will hand Egypt over
    to a hard, cruel master.
A fierce king will rule them,”

What boggles the mind is this thriving civilization waxed, matured, and declined many centuries before "ancient" Rome was founded in 753BCE.
Of course Rome is closer to us in time than the era of the pharaohs.
Hollywood, that arbiter of much that we think we know of Rome, decreed that gladiators and goofy emperors was more commercially viable.

Research has shown that ancient Egyptians believed that statues had a life force. If an opposing power came across a statue it wanted to disable, the best way to do that was to break off the statue's nose. Religion has undoubtedly played a significant role in the de-nosing and dismembering of cultural and historical treasures. This has not just taken place thanks to the activities of extremist Muslims, as many may assume. Over the centuries, individuals of various religious beliefs, including Christians, Jews and others, have been responsible for acts of vandalism. These shameful acts have resulted in the destruction of countless valuable cultural and historical treasures.
