    Man, once Tony feels his way into a solo, he becomes just an oracle for a much larger spiritual language.

      @@OriginalGansta88 tony williams DID like charlie benante of the thrash metal band anthrax. in fact, tony williams wanted to form a thrash metal band in the years before his death. he had switched to dw and got a huge double bass kit. if he were alive today, he would have pissed off jazz fans many times over by now.

    Billy and Bob are gratefully still with us, but sadly Tony, Wallace and Mulgrew have gone home. That opening solo of Tony rolling through rudiments with such dynamics was amazing. Tony got his head inside the music he created and at times sounded like an earthquake, but that was his creative way of responding and setting up the changes. A giant of a musician. I have a visual Tribute to him on my channel and so you should know, I loved this man's playing.

    Tony Williams was the king at creating dynamic throughout the solos. Must have been a great joy playing with him

    Vinnie Coliauta's favourite drummer used to be Buddy. And then someone directed his attention to this album called Ego.

    The remo clear with the black dot.....man that was some baddd shit....BTW Tony changed the way drums were approached......changed the game.....he's among a very small crew in that respect.....

    Miller REALLY shines on Red Mask, he's really channeling McCoy Tyner on this one - playing those titanic quartal harmonies behind the soloist. whoa

    That beat he kicks into at like 6:54, when the band comes in is just an insane groove! Puts a smile on my face! What a beast!

    Great concert! The intonation between Billy and Wallace at times is a little wacky. I met Mulgrew at a hotel breakfast room while on tour in Germany. I didn't recognize him or his friend at first. I heard them speaking English so I asked their names. The other guy "My name is Ron Carter" and then "And I'm Mulgrew Miller". My heart sank as I felt sooooo dumb. Ron looked so young. It was Ron Carter's Golden Striker trio. They were gracious enough to talk with me about Tony for a bit. Mulgrew more than Ron but I was star struck and probably making a fool of myself. The next day our van passed their bus on the road. Good times!

    I always felt weird for some reason about switching back and forth between traditional and match grip, thought I was doing something wrong, until I saw Tony do it, then I was like oh cool! LOL

    If I could choose my own DNA string setup: 49% Billy Cobham, 2 % my own personality, 49% Tony Williams. Wow, it is and will always be absolutely GREAT !

    1989 they should all still be alive WTF?? It just seems like yesterday when I caught this band at the Rainbow in Seattle. Mulgrew was so cool kind took time outa his break to talk at length to a jazz nerd like me.

    • @raghailligh1080
      @raghailligh1080 2 роки тому +4

      Exactly, my thought. I was lucky enough to see this band in its day. Tony, Wallace and Mulgrew should have had long careers, but they all went so young. We seem to have lost so many younger musicians who came up in the 80s - not only Miller and Roney but Geri Allen, James Williams, Ralph Peterson and too many more to recall right now.

    12:30 This man loved music way more than he loved jazz or anything. Pure inspiration and innovation, 0% fear. That little beat is just mawwwwaaah! 🤌 Perfect.

    Buuddy Rich was only fast and a show off with no dynamiics. When Anthony Williams arrived, he was put to shame. Tony came from the world of Max Roach. Enough said! Just listen to the TIME inside that double stroke roll at the start here. So subtle and amazing!

    Damn, that's heavy sh_t. Suits on (except Tony) ! I would have gone home delirious after the opening roll... Mulgrew is a McCoy man and I love the vibe.. Plus Wallace and Billy stagger their unison lines and Wallace stands like Miles... I love it (born the year his quintet folded).. !!! Billy struggles at the tempo around 19:30, which is fair enough...the crowd are like a Wodan's spear-wall and are totally into it being 90% ear-scratching musicians, and get the delayed ending at 23:17, which I didn't lol, ...with the clever set-building by Tony whipping-them into a (german-level) frenzy before his big tacet intro whose cue must be a certain smile ..?... AT 29:43- Mulgrew comes to own proceedings as he guides Billy and then Wallace in what must be a tricky set of chords to burn over...intervening with helpful comping like Herbie would.. then turning in a juicy solo with multiple melodic minors i think, so modern.... the last tune a little latin with an incredible Tony solo over an ostinato like 'Aja' sped up three-times, wow...... Really great vid to watch and listen to, thanks for posting !!

      So nice to hear him playing “music” in his solo instead of all the boring fusion chops type stuff so many drummers seems to be obsessed with. His technique is off the charts but he makes it all interesting and accessible.

    I like his tuning, how he sets up, the Ks …. Love it all. Was he a 12 and 13 inch ride Tom guy I can’t tell by looking? Or is that 13 and 14?

    • @mancuniancandidatem
      @mancuniancandidatem Рік тому +1

      Possibly 13x9 and 14x10. I think that's a 24 kick drum, so it would look similar dimension wise to a 12 n 13 on a 22 kick, but I'm sure it's a 24 kick.
      It also looks like his floor tom arrangement is 14, 16 and 18, so he has Two 14 inch toms, with the 14 floor tom having a deeper dimension. Probably 14x10 and 14x14.
