    As a Chelsea fan of 53 years, that's a blast from the past. All those players were instantly recognisable, even some of the Burnley ones. I can imagine the difficulty today's players would have controlling the ball on that pitch.

    favourite era of football for me looking back as when started going - but the goalkeeping was awful back then

    Who's here in 2020, 50 years later? I think Sean Dyche was Burnley's manager in 1970 as well.

    I remember that so well. Chelsea beat us in the reply 3-1 aet with the late Peter Houseman having a superb game after Ralph Coates put the Clarets ahead with a 30 yarder.

    • @hauntboy
      @hauntboy 4 роки тому +2

      Yes, it's mentioned on his wikipedia page. It was the only match on Chelsea's victorious cup run where no footage exists or ever existed. Houseman was excellent throughout the cup run and scored 6 goals in total, but his best game in a Chelsea shirt was sadly never captured for posterity.

    Hmmm....Martin Dobson, signed by Burnley from Bolton on a free transfer, 4 years later became the second most expensive player in British football when he moved to Everton for £300,000. Doesn't say much about the quality of management at Bolton in this era.

      Sounds like the quality of management there in the last 12 years.

    Chelsea won the replay 3-1 (Houseman 2 and Baldwin) and went on to win the Cup. The replay was the only Chelsea match in their cup winning season which wasn't televised.

    I’m a Claret and went to the replay at the Turf as an 11 year old Ralph Coates scored a screamer in a packed ground but Chelsea beat us and went on to win it I think

      He starred in a 2-0 win over then world champions West Germany & they could not believe he had played so little for the national team. But injuries plagued him & I think he would admit that his overall attitude did not help him at times.

      @@beds139 and once Hurst was past his best Chivers was probably the best number 9 in the country. After Chivers international career ended following the Poland debacle Osgood played in the following game against Italy but he too was probably past it in a declining club side then

      In those days, it was 2 points for a win and 1 point for a draw. 22 teams in Division 1, which means each team played 42 matches. 66 points from 42 matches is really impressive.
