Once upon a time lived a man starving continually, he was Starving Matthias. In his great misery he nearly hanged himself when he met the devil. He managed to swindle a quintal of gold out of the devil. Later on the devils wanted to get back the gold but Starving Matthias outwitted them at all times. He starved never again. When he died the devils did not dare to receive him into the hell but St. Peter did not receive him into the heaven even. Since that time Starving Matthias has been sitting at the heaven’s door.

The makers used the decorative art of a certain countryside region at each episode. The trio of folk art, folk music and folk tales are masterfully combined in the episodes, which have unique imagery, sometimes spicy folk humor in the dialogues. Thanks to the natural presentation of the storytellers, and the music of the Kaláka band, the viewer can experience something unique and special.

200 pounds of gold is still just 200 pounds. The average healthy man is around 185 pounds. And Starving Mathias would likely be closer to 160 since he is starving after all. Which means he is carrying about 40 pounds more than his body weight. Which is doable.
But not a damn resume.

From watching these I have learned that if you go into a Hungarian forest, you are sure to meet either an animal or fairy that will punish you for being rude, or the devil, who it turns out is all talk.

These stories are quite old and are told from generation to generation. Back then the people had many fears of the unknown and behold many superstions of what could go wrong. They had little knowledge of fizics and science.
Long short story ,
Due to lack of knowledge and the situation back than, these stories appeared.
My g-ma used to tell me such stories before bed -time. Reason why i can't watch horror movies today lol 😂😂😂

Pretty much. Also, there are demons like Nyavaja, who i believe causes illness, Baj, who causes misfortune and Fene, whom i can't quite remember... And then there's the Markoláb and the Zsákosember who are the boogeymans of Hungary. And the Rézf*szú Bagoly (Copper D*ck Owl), who causes abortion. Fun folklore!

This story definitely has the most dubious moral code out of all of the other ones I’ve seen so far lol, Matthias was starving and prepared to take his own life when he just happened to outsmart a few remarkably obtuse devils who God probably doesn’t like anyway. I don’t understand why he wasn’t let into Heaven!

I don't think so. I always thought, that he couldn't go to Heaven because accepting that gold was technically a deal with the devil, and he couldn't go to Hell because the devils were afraid of him.

Theres an american folk tail that was probably adapted from this its called Wicked John and the devil probably brought by hungarian immigrants originally and then took on its own flavor in the old west

i wonder why the devil is animated differently in each short.
Each story is from a different time, sometimes there are even hundreds of years between them. They look differently because they were depicted differently in these tales. Normally if someone would just tell you this tale they would go into detail about how the characters look, in animation that is skipped and instead it is drawn.

If you pause 5:53 just a little before they shut the door you can glimpse the devils looking up in terror before Matthias lands.

He entertained the devil. He got the devils interest by attempting suicide and heaven banished him for playing the devils tricks as well. Basically he didn't take his punishment in due time, so now has eternity to consider his impertinence. 'the arrogance of man'

Hungarian folk tales are all about poor farmers, princesses who need a husband, appearing devils, and talking animals. Same plot stories just diffrent drawings.
It's like listening to a bard telling awesome stories...so heartwarming:)

This is the weirdest one so far. Dont rly get it.
Best to beat the devils by NOT becoming one yourself. Liked how story shows that greed is a ultimate dark sin that made Matthias look worse while he handled devils. Could have helped if Matthias gave back half of gold while managing himself better and not giving the demons hard time, but his own choices have prevented his entry to Heaven.

At first i was sad Mathias stayed out of heaven at the end 😢 but i realized he wasn't going to heaven if he had hung himself.
If the Devil had just been prepared to wait, never mind the gold, he would have gotten Mathias' soul when he died. Which is, I presume, the point of the exercise in the first place. But he didn't get even that. And for 200 lousy pieces of gold Mathias spends eternity in limbo, rejected even by Hell.
