Foraged Wild Welsh Estuary Catch and Cook with Craig Evans

  • As it was another nice day here in my native Carmarthenshire,West Wales. I decided to take "Llew" for a walk across the sand bars and estuary channels to see how the winter storms had affected the sea pools I use to catch flounders by hand,and to check the pools for small shrimps and sand gobies (fish) . I also surveyed some of my foraging spots for Marsh Samphire and Wild Fennel. It looks like it's going to be another great year. As it was too windy to cook on the shore,I decided to take my catch home and cook it in my kitchen. As I was alone with just "Llew" for company ,I filmed the outside footage myself,hence I do not appear in the early part. My son Dafydd then filmed the cooking process.

      Coastal Foraging With Craig Evans my 4yr old daughter and I are such massive fans of your videos. We live in Fiji, right across the beach and mangroves where we forage a lot as well. I'm so inspired by your educational and adventurous videos! My little girl and I have learned so much and I'm so proud of her when she is able to identify our native marine life. Thank you for your time and patience and sense of adventure! We love You!

      You are very welcome Michelle, I find it heartening that you are teaching your daughter about your native marine life,because without this knowledge future generations may not have the respect and care required to save their environment from development ,pollution etc. It is an ambition of mine to visit your beautiful islands, kind regards Craig

    Another corker Craig. I always learn at least a half a dozen things watching your videos. Sand goby's? Who ever knew! I always find myself saying out loud, when you are cooking, 'bloody hell, that looks nice.' Also looking forward to the hand catching Flat Fish video. I can't wait to get back to my fave places in South West Wales again. Watching your videos always cheers me up. Thanks Craig.

    Love your videos Craig. i love a good forage but my knowledge no where near compares to yours. i've learnt so much watching your videos. Do you have any recommendations of books or other channels where i could improve my knowledge further? That omelette looks delicious. Try sticking it under the grill to finish it rather than flipping it. it will puff up the egg and make it lighter without scorching the already cooked mussel meat etc with direct contact with the pan. i'm a chef by trade so just a little tip there. it helps it look nicer on the plate too :)

    looked like a first rate omelet ! never tried sand gobies before... I don't think I see them here . reminds me of sculpins & stickleback . have you eaten thoughts ? I may have to try.
    Your video was interrupted by a long beach walk. foraging for spruce tips, columbine nectar. & some spruce pitch mixed with shredded cedar bark for a fire starting compound...
    this morning I mostly finished a cooking video... :) & I was able to test 5 pieces of gear I made recently ... a steamer being one of them...
    I've definitely got to make some of that powered shell... shrimp will have to suffice for lobster . some how i don't think crab would do ... fish bones & fins do very well. thanks for the tips Craig.

    Interesting video! You’re a very knowledge guy, Craig. Keep up the good work! I have a question around the ancient oak tree stump. Any idea how it got the flat surface? Since you said it could be around 8-10k years old wondering if people in those ages had like a saw or something to cut them off so neatly?

    • @coastalforagingwithcraigev8447
      @coastalforagingwithcraigev8447  6 років тому +1

      It must have been covered by sand/mud for much of that period,that stump has only been exposed for about 15 years. I suspect the flat top came about by it being exposed to the sea water and become part of the exposed sea bed for much of that time. Regards Craig

    Hi Craig, love your videos!
    Just wondering where you you get all this knowledge of foraging from? I would love to see you do a Q&A video!

      Many thanks Turbo Tokyo,I'm mainly self taught by learning about the coastal environment,firstly by books ,then the internet. Most importantly I have made it a priority to visit every nook and cranny of the Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire coasts of Wales UK. I am happy to answer any questions on here,regards Craig

    i think i have watched everything you have done now , did you make the video you mention here about hand catching flounders ? off to the seaside Tuesday (19th march 2019) for a few days in the campervan will be putting in to practice all ive seen here , have a full set of spearfishing gear a kayak a cast net and gill net and ofc fishing gear , also have a prawn net for the pools and some crayfish traps that double as prawn traps , should be fun !!

      Yes I did Edgunsuk, it's probably too early for prawns as the water is at its coldest now, best wait until May for them , good luck , regards Craig
