Foraged Wild Welsh Estuary Catch and Cook with Craig Evans

- As it was another nice day here in my native Carmarthenshire,West Wales. I decided to take "Llew" for a walk across the sand bars and estuary channels to see how the winter storms had affected the sea pools I use to catch flounders by hand, and to check the pools for small shrimps and sand gobies (fish) . I also surveyed some of my foraging spots for Marsh Samphire and Wild Fennel. It looks like it's going to be another great year. As it was too windy to cook on the shore,I decided to take my catch home and cook it in my kitchen. As I was alone with just "Llew" for company ,I filmed the outside footage myself, hence I do not appear in the early part. My son Dafydd then filmed the cooking process.
Great video again dad. Count me in for catching the flat fish 👍
Middle of June probably ,Daddy x

Coastal Foraging With Craig Evans my 4yr old daughter and I are such massive fans of your videos. We live in Fiji, right across the beach and mangroves where we forage a lot as well. I'm so inspired by your educational and adventurous videos! My little girl and I have learned so much and I'm so proud of her when she is able to identify our native marine life. Thank you for your time and patience and sense of adventure! We love You!
You are very welcome Michelle, I find it heartening that you are teaching your daughter about your native marine life, because without this knowledge future generations may not have the respect and care required to save their environment from development ,pollution etc. It is an ambition of mine to visit your beautiful islands, kind regards Craig
Coastal Foraging With Craig Evans Me and my family are avid followers as well! We live far from beach so your videos are always a treat. We always look forward to your videos. Btw the dog is a big thumbs up as well!!

on of your best videos yet. So many different ingredients
Thank you Amsel, the variety of food that can be found on our coast is hard to believe, regards Craig
You know this could be a show on the outdoor life network. You should consider pitching the idea. Or someone like Jamie Oliver the chef. You go out and share your wealth of knowledge and tell him what it I'd and what it tastes Luke and have him make up a fish from all forage ingredients. I would watch that all day haha. Amazing video Craig. As always. Cheers from Canada, gradyn
Many thanks Gradyn, more to come, regards Craig
I love these videos
Hi Craig thanks for sharing this wonderful video, im your avid follower here in NEW ZEALAND .
My thanks for your kind words Tommy, I hope to visit New Zealand one day, perhaps I could combine a visit of rugby and foraging😉,regards Craig
Craig , you're channel is awesome. I love your simple method of introducing us to the skills that you have in foraging for real and heathy food from the coast. By the way Craig, have you thought of opening up a restaurant? It would be like no other restaurant that I know of! I'm sure that it would be a success.
Thanks for sharing . ATVB. Steve.
Many thanks for your great comment Steve, I have not thought about opening a restaurant, but I will concentrate on providing my foraging courses www.coastalforaging.co.uk,regards Craig

Coastal Foraging With Craig Evans that will be so kool!
Much love. I gotta get over there n visit.
Thank you ,come on over ,it's great here, much better than Transylvania LOL,regards Craig
I'm off tomorow with my net and bucket. See What I can find here now, I am just up the coast from you in Aberystwyth, see If I can find anything! Suprisingly there isnt a lot of mussels and hardly any cockles to be found, I know plenty of sea beet around and wild garlic in the lanes. Great videos you have made, every one a winner!
All the best now, Dave
Thank you Dave, good luck for tomorrow, regards Craig
Another relaxing and enjoyable video! I wish I could forage from my coast but the Indian coast is so polluted, the idea is unappealing. Anyhow, please continue foraging, cooking and posting, sir.. you will always have me on my toes for your next video.
It really saddens me to hear reports of pollution like that Livingston, I'll try my best show you the best of our coastline, regards Craig
Love your videos Craig. i love a good forage but my knowledge no where near compares to yours. i've learnt so much watching your videos. Do you have any recommendations of books or other channels where i could improve my knowledge further? That omelette looks delicious. Try sticking it under the grill to finish it rather than flipping it. it will puff up the egg and make it lighter without scorching the already cooked mussel meat etc with direct contact with the pan. i'm a chef by trade so just a little tip there. it helps it look nicer on the plate too :)
Thank you for the tip borkthebasher. There are quite a few books on foraging, but the best all round book I can recommend is "The Edible Seashore " by John Wright. A great read for the beginner and more.Regards Craig
Oh to be able to forage like that along the sea shore. I am land locked in the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming. Morel mushrooms is about all I forage other than hunting wild game. I surely do enjoy your videos!
Still a great place to live then 416 rem, regards Craig
Great video.
Thank you again Maria, glad you like it ,regards Craig
Addicted your video craig, dont really know why? Best regards to your doggie😊😊
Don't panic Ernie, plenty more to follow, regards from me and Llew.
Excellent recipe - almost everything hand picked in the field :) I'd love to explore that beach pond - i could spend hours stalking small crabs, fish and, hopefully even tiny octopus.
Thank you again Frik Na Luzie, I hope to make a video of hand catching flounders in that pond in a month or 2 ,regards Craig
Mmmmm. Flounders. Fried flounder is one of my favourite fish dishes. Alas, since i live far, far inland i can only really taste it while on vacations :) Still, the thing i envy you the most, is incredible biodiversity you have literally in arm's reach. So many interesting animals and plants thanks to Atlantic :) Our almost landlocked pond of Baltic Sea has nothing on your area.
excellenté as always
Many thanks again John,regards Craig
Craig really loves wild garlic
I really do XfromHalo,it's at its best now ,regards Craig
Your content is great
Glad you like it Ant Van Biggs, I hope the film quality will improve as I get more experienced, regards Craig
Fantastic vid as ever..but sack the omelette flipper... splat!! Haha
Love the dog
As do we softshellturtle,regards Craig
Superb as always
Thank you ,it's great that I can show you our coastline, regards Craig
Took my nippers out razor clamming last week and cooked them up in the woods on a fire torch. Loved it
Fantastic, there's nothing like finding and cooking food with your children, regards Craig
judging by what you plated up, your son doesn't like beet greens, but wanted a shot at the seafood omelet. Another great video, you keep inspiring me to try new things here in Oregon.
Many thanks again Bill,Dafydd does like his omletts, regards Craig.
Looks good
Master Craig thanks for sharing, I've waited for your video looks tasty but the cat looks kinda weird though LOL...
Omelet looks delicious. Nutritious meal!
It was quite nice Almonte, regards Craig
Yet again another great video, but tell me Craig have you tried foraging down scarlet town (llanelli)
Looks delicious
It was quite nice John ,regards Craig
OMG Craig it looks so yummyyyyyyy....😋😋😋😋
It was quite nice ELLIEAS,regards Craig
I never heard of lobster shell powdered. Must be like kombu dashi i suppose. Like a powdered fish stock. I'm loving that idea. I might try and do that.
Give it a try Miss Honey, but it is a very powerful taste ,don't use too much, regards Craig
Sir Craig, I loved all of your videos, but it's your doggie that I loved the most.. He's just so adorable. Is he a Labrador??
Thank you Jesse ,he is an 18 month old Golden Retriever, regards Craig
he's such a charming love, he was wanting his share of the omelette hehehe
Mac daddy of foraging
looked like a first rate omelet ! never tried sand gobies before... I don't think I see them here . reminds me of sculpins & stickleback . have you eaten thoughts ? I may have to try.
Your video was interrupted by a long beach walk. foraging for spruce tips, columbine nectar. & some spruce pitch mixed with shredded cedar bark for a fire starting compound...
this morning I mostly finished a cooking video... :) & I was able to test 5 pieces of gear I made recently ... a steamer being one of them...
I've definitely got to make some of that powered shell... shrimp will have to suffice for lobster . some how i don't think crab would do ... fish bones & fins do very well. thanks for the tips Craig.
Thank you again Nomadic Oasis,I've never tried sticklebacks. The small sand gobies are here in their billions in the estuary areas and really easy to catch with a hand net. Your interruption sounds great.Crab,Prawns and Shrimps work equally as well to make the powder.Regards Craig
Thanks Craig. I thought crab may not work well as the shell is quite thick ... our legal size crabs are much bigger over here... the best way is try it ! see what happens :) Jared
Hi, Craig. I am an avid follower of your channel and collect your recipes. Thank you so much for teaching how to forage wild edibles/
I have a questions, dear. Regarding the little fish, do you clean their gut out first before cooking them? I was not able to see those things clearly in the video and you didn't mention them.
Lovely seafood omelet.
Cheers!
Linda Lee
Thank you Linda, the "sand gobies " are too small to gut, therefore we eat them whole like White Bait, regards Craig
Coastal Foraging With Craig Evans
Whoa that's metal
?
@@coastalforagingwithcraigev8447 He's saying eating something whole, guts and all, is a metal thing- I meant to say it to clear it up but it sounds condescending.
No sure about the idea of all those fishes 🐠 and their bones in my teeth but, still really informative and interesting. 👍
Glad you like it , the bones in the small sand gobies are to small to notice, regards Craig
Interesting video! You’re a very knowledge guy, Craig. Keep up the good work! I have a question around the ancient oak tree stump. Any idea how it got the flat surface? Since you said it could be around 8-10k years old wondering if people in those ages had like a saw or something to cut them off so neatly?
It must have been covered by sand/mud for much of that period, that stump has only been exposed for about 15 years. I suspect the flat top came about by it being exposed to the sea water and become part of the exposed sea bed for much of that time. Regards Craig
Your dog is gorgeous. What type of golden retriever is he? You’re the man Craig!! Do you do classes?? Will hedlu get you for poaching? Hedlu hedlu
"Llew" is a normal Golden Retriever Jackson. I provide classes www.coastalforaging.co.uk,starting soon. Hedlu(heddlu) ,do you mean the police ? All my activities are totally legal. Regards Craig
Good to c u guys... how are u guys doing?
Very well ,StayAlone Paul, good to hear from you again, regards Craig
Awesome!
Thank you Monalyn, more to come, regards Craig
Fabuloso
Glad you like it Irineu, regards Craig
Oh wow
Hi Craig, love your videos!
Just wondering where you you get all this knowledge of foraging from? I would love to see you do a Q&A video!
Many thanks Turbo Tokyo,I'm mainly self taught by learning about the coastal environment, firstly by books ,then the internet. Most importantly I have made it a priority to visit every nook and cranny of the Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire coasts of Wales UK. I am happy to answer any questions on here, regards Craig
i think i have watched everything you have done now , did you make the video you mention here about hand catching flounders ? off to the seaside Tuesday (19th march 2019) for a few days in the campervan will be putting in to practice all ive seen here , have a full set of spearfishing gear a kayak a cast net and gill net and ofc fishing gear , also have a prawn net for the pools and some crayfish traps that double as prawn traps , should be fun !!
Yes I did Edgunsuk, it's probably too early for prawns as the water is at its coldest now, best wait until May for them , good luck , regards Craig
Nice vid
Glad you like it Ollie, regards Craig
Shrimps very tasty it is something we don't get many of here just prawns mostly
We get shrimps on the sandy areas and prawns in the rocky places Trojs Fishing,we have a number of prawn species ,but the main edible ones are the common prawn, regards Craig
yesss another video! :D oh man why does everything you guys find and cook look so delicious? Wish i could come to wales to forage~
When did you start foraging? Did anyone teach you or are you self taught?
I've been foraging since childhood Lin, I was taught the basics by my father and I have been trying to improve my knowledge ever since, regards Craig
