Shout out to Cow Town, AKA, City Of Trees, Sac Of Tomato. NORCAL all the way. When in doubt, just block the aqueduct and NORCAL will always win. Ha ha. California is a win win all around. The most beautiful and diverse state in the union. Even though I retired in Florida. With pride, I always tell people California has everything. From desert to ocean, from meadows to mountains, from cities to country. California does have all four season. I've been through all of California, without a doubt we have 4 seasons. If you don't like one season, just drive a little within the state, the weather can drastically change for ya. Hella love your videos, wish it would have popped up on my UA-cam sooner. Good stuff Maynard!
Oh come on, even if the aqueduct were blocked, my city of San Diego would still have enough water to last, well, probably until it becomes a desert which will happen a long time from now. How would you like it if we brought out all of our military bases and send them north to take care of the rudelands?
I have no problem with SoCal. I love all of California. I feel like we are more alike than different but for some reason, there’s always transplants that go to LA then SF and say “oh it’s sooo different” lol nobody up here in NorCal cares for that shit. I lived in NorCal and currently live in SoCal. I hated NorCal, except Pacifica. Pacifica is amazing and gorgeous. I live in San Diego. It's way nicer than the Bay Area. The beaches are prettier in NorCal, but the weather, crime, and cost of living are all better here. I like the people better here too. Although, I'm not a big fan of Californians, in general.
Give hwy 395 a drive too, completely different scenery. It really feels like you're driving through a completely different state when driving from Lone Pine to Tahoe

@@malaquiasalfaro81 youre kidding right. its never unbearably hot relative to other states and the more debatable hotter months are 3/12 in the year. for the perfect climate we get in socal the 3/12 months is nothing. in fact rn our days are literally immaculate lol
@@kiwi9660 That's what I was referring to. Great weather in general, no doubt. It doesn't get terribly hot in the part of the Central Valley I'm from, I'd consider that ideal but then again it could be how I was raised. What part of SoCal were you referring to?
I'm from the desolate northern Calif area near Red Bluff. Orange County is a conservative stronghold next to totally liberal LA. The airport there is "John Wayne International." When you stand in the Bay Area and look past the Golden Gate bridge toward the setting sun and the Pacific, it is truly awe-inspiring. California is a really beautiful state once you leave the cities. I would recommend that every American take at least one drive from San Francisco up the coast to Crescent City. You will be stumbling all over yourself to find the right superlatives to describe the wonder.
When I was a medical intern in the 1970s I had a resident who was born in California but had moved away to practice in a rural location in another state. He was now back taking specialty training. I told I couldn’t wait to get out of California; too many people. He said: why do you think there are so many people here? Here it is 2020 and I’m retired and I’m still here (in SoCal).
In 2009 a meteorological research team determined that Oakland had the best climate in the country and I agree. Rarely colder than 50, rarely hotter than 90. I don’t ever want to leave
Oakland is very underrated. The weather is better than SF, it's a lot greener and nicer than SF on average, and it can hold its own all day in cultural vibrancy. Plus it's a lot less expensive. Crime and drugs and homelessness are bad but the same is true in SF.
Attention: no one from southern california cares or is even aware of any “rivalry” while NorCal definitely does care. It’s very one sided argument where one party is way into the subject and the other literally doesn’t think about the north at all, whether good or bad. I’m from coastal California so I’m from both areas
HAHAHA yaaSSS!! San diego native here, and full on im just gonna say it......no one heres cares about any "rivalry" with other places. We dont feel the need to compete because we dont have to. Celebrities come HERE to "get away" and relax, know WHY? because we treat them like regular people!! Tom cruz could come here and walk down the street, and most folks here will not bother them. This has been noted by other celebrities that ive seen in interviews before over the years. Will ferrell has family down here in chula vista, Nick canons mother used to live right up the road from my mother in laws house (which i now OWN) as well as others! If your a celeb you can come here on the down low and NOT feel harassed. Stars KNOW that, and thats why they will flock here everytime. Kids are also taught NOT to just run up to them and bother them (or at least they were taught that when i was a kid in the late 80's/early 90's. We were told that they are people too and we want them to come back to our little town again so its best we not bother them while their trying to relax.
Not really lmao. Just LA people always stealing our lingo and music. It’s very common in the hip hop industry to run with bay music. We’re chilling but we call out the fake shit asap
I'm a Northern Californian (5th generation) and I have to agree on Southern beaches are wonderful! From pebble beaches to the softest sand I ever felt! The water is noticeably warmer than up here, as well. I love our beaches here, especially Monterey, but Southern California has much more comfortable and pleasant beaches. IMO
This is definitely a great video/guide for those who have never experienced California's two states. And you are totally right, I'm from LA and I'd always rather be in San Francisco.
No one ever acknowledges Irvine with its 0/100000 homicide rate in a population of almost 300000. The best cities are Irvine and San Diego. Everyone thinks orange county has bad traffic but in reality, it is way better than Los Angeles.
Sacramento imo is in the top 3 best cities in California. Relatively low cost of living and tons of outdoor stuff to do. Tons of wildlife, and great food.

Maybe I'm wrong but that's the vibe it gave me ! Great video regardless, keep up the good work

Brando bee because it grew fast, lost its culture and got expensive. But it will find itself. San Jose is what you make it, and will one day turn into something special. Just watch.
Usually when I see "San Jose" and "exciting" in the same sentence there's a "not" in between lol. I grew up in Cupertino and we drove 40 miles north to San Francisco when we wanted to have fun.
I lived in San Diego for a long time and would one day love to move back, but I'm living in Tennessee now (my actual home state) and my favorite way to describe SD to people here who have never been is "it's what you think Southern California is but without the bullshit"
I just moved back to my home state after 11 years in Texas. I'm a Bay Area native so I'm glad Nor Cal got the win. SoCal is thought to be the better part of the state by the tourists and the rest of the nation. I love Southern California though too.

@Geography King I used to live in LA, I loved it but it was so dirty and the traffic was horrible! I live in Florida now and I have noticed that SoCal and Florida are very similar, so could you please do a SoCal vs Southern Florida comparison!
Yeah there are a lot of similarities between the two. I'll be doing some more comparison videos so FL-SoCal is definitely one of the ones I'll be considering.
Uhhhhh not even close! I lived in WEALTHY West Palm Beach area and Miami. There is no comparison. California as a whole is so much better than Florida. Florida is hot and boring unless you’re on the beach.
M S Florida has nice nightlife and weather. I would say it’s not as outdoorsy as Cali. We have more diverse cuisines, deserts, mountains, avocados, no hurricanes, waves are WAY better when surfing. I would say the options are endless out in Cali although no disrespect to Florida. I just wouldn’t feel comfortable with reptiles popping up from time to time
I prefer the southeast coast of FL over SoCal. Both places, you have to stay close to the beach for ideal weather. Love the intracoastal waterway and canals in SE Fl. Cost of living is no comparison, NO state income tax vs 13% in CA! Housing also more affordable in FL.
I’m from the central valley in Tulare County (near Sequoia National Park)! It’s so interesting to here someone’s perspective on the state as I don’t fit in with either the North or South
The summer weather in NorCal is the only tolerable summer weather to me. I'm more than a bit biased (been in Oakland all my life), but I just CAN'T handle any temperature over 75.
Great video as usual! I had a 4th grade teacher who was a German war bride. She had lived with her American husband for 2 years in Germany and then moved with him to his hometown of Alturas California. She told us "Alturas, means altitude in Spanish!" She thought it would be warm weather, palm trees, swimming pools, bathing suits and movie stars as neighbors! Ha ha it turned out to be high, dry, cold with lots of sage brush, cowboys and mile after mile of empty country. She said she almost went crazy at first but learned to love living in the empty Northeast corner of California..
Central California is somewhere around just east of Coalinga. Central coast is Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo. There is a whole lot more of Northern California than you think... it's just not well populated. I once folded a California map in to 4ths to see where California's center, it came real close to just east of Coalinga. There are miles and miles of beautiful pristine coastline North of San Francisco, like Bodega Bay, Mendocino, Humboldt and Crescent City.... all the way to Oregon. ✌😎
Santa Barbara is considered Southern California, Santa Barbara is definitely not Northern California. Not even close. There is alot more to Northern California than Monterey and San Francisco. Northern California is HUGE.

I spent my childhood in the bay area and lived outside LA as an adult. I have traveled almost every nook in CA and I think you gave this a really fair review. Alot to love about both ends of the state.
Honestly as a San Diego native I would say there is a stronger rivalry/dislike between SD and LA than there is between So cal and norcal and basically put like someone else said Socal doesnt think about norcal so its a bit of a one sided rivalry in that regard but between LA and SD theres alot of of intermixing/back and forth travel/interaction so we are more acutelty aware of each other
I can agree too. I am from San Diego and I 🤬 hate Los Angeles. I also 🤬 hate the location San Diego is in. It really makes San Diego seem a lot worse than it actually is.
I love my home in the central coast. Lots of cowboy country and surf n skater activity. Big Sur and Monterey and Hollister. I got love for all of California. Yeea Santa Cruz mentioned! Woo!
That seems pretty similar to San Diego. We in San Diego, we don't call ourselves part of Southern California. We Call ourselves part of Southeast California.
While i am giving this video a thumbs up, i feel that you BARELY talked about San Diego at all and we deserve better. We dont care about LA, we're not like them and we like it that way.
If you want fog and cool go across the bridge, and if you want sun and heat go through the tunnel. If you want to see both, drive up in the Oakland hills above the Caldicott Tunnel.
I like this, it’s a good comparison but also depends on how much weight you give the categories. I have to say I disagree with the food aspect, San Francisco has some of the best food I’ve ever eaten, consistently. But I am sure loving living in Los Angeles and building a fun, dynamic life there in the sunshine!
Certainly a lot is just my opinion, especially with food and music. My intent was to make a lighthearted comparison that was "subliminally educational". And I do love the food scene in SF. Every time I'm there I hit up a couple of places I love and know will be good and then try a couple of new places. I've (almost) never been disappointed.
I know the bands I'm about to say are primarily punk/metal, but I thought I'd share a little more music knowledge. Bands from NorCal include Green Day, Deftones, Papa Roach, AFI, and many others. Bands from SoCal include Tool, Korn, Rage Against The Machine, Avenged Sevenfold, System of a Down, and many others. Also, (according to eventbrite) Sacramento is the fastest growing music scene in the US, while Los Angeles is slowly shrinking as far as the music scene goes.
You live in Fresno County? I just moved to California from Michigan. This Video helped me get to know my new state! Thanks! And on the east coast of the US, LA is hyped up. Its not as good as you hear in northeastern states and the Midwest. San Francisco is actually better, crazy? I thought SoCal would be better, but NoCali is. AND I NEVER KNEW THE WATER WAS FREEZING
Glad you liked the video. I'm actually from Tulare County just south of Fresno. Most people that I've met from back east prefer SF to LA as well. And yes that ocean water is freezing even in the middle of summer!
@@GeographyKing Yup. Went to Tulare outlets. Lots of people from Fresno talk about that. So is the water actually warmer in the winter? I guess I went the wrong time. Used to Michigan :)
@@jordon6067 The water is ALWAYS cold. Even as far south as San Diego. Actually even down the Baja coast of Mexico the water is still pretty chilly. Never really been a fan of outlet shops. Not really my thing, but people do like the ones in Tulare.
In the winter, people in one part of california, people have hot chocolate, their fireplace on, and snowy roads. While in another part, people are swimming in outdoor pools, sitting on the beach, and eating ice cream.
I 💗 my Santa Cruz. 🌲🌲 Monterey would be a fairer comparison to Santa Barbara, I think. Same distance, too. But I'm glad you reviewed Santa Cruz. :) I grew up on the Monterey Peninsula, but Santa Cruz is home. The whole Monterey Bay is lined with beaches, too. The northern stretch (Santa Cruz) lies in a pocket that is often sunny during the summer, while the rest of the shoreline is socked in with fog. So small wonder the over-the-hill traffic on hot days, especially weekends, can be insane. Oh, and the clam chowder is even better on the Monterey Wharf than anywhere in San Francisco. Not one person who's eaten it there will disagree. But as we told people at the wine bar, there is no perfect wine for you. It's all in what you enjoy. So the battle between Northern California and Southern California boils down to one preference: which way do you want to die of exposure?
I really thought he was going to talk about Monterey and was surprised at seeing Santa Cruz. Both Santa Barbara and Monterey aren't really part of the north or south especially when you're talking about culture. They're pretty much bookends to the central coast. (Santa Cruz being its own unique self not really Northern CA and just a little bit too close to Silicon Valley for their own liking.) Go Slugs!
LA is the only place where you can go snow skiing (Big Bear or Wrightwood), take a drive thru a desert (Hwy 138/Pearblossom), have lunch at a nice cafe (Silver Lake or Beverly Hills), watch an NBA game (Lakers/Clippers), and go surfing as you watch the sun set (Malibu), all in the same day.
Lived in both SoCal and NorCal and I think the weather is much nicer in NorCal. Yes it's a lil cold up there in the winter, but the summers in SoCal are like being in Mars.
moved from Orange County to Northern Calif in 1993, I love it here. Beaches on northern coast are totally different than So Cal. did miss Huntington Beach for awhile but got over it. When I went to DMV and walked in and got out of there within 30mins I knew I made the right choice. I have visited Orange County a few times since moving here and it is horrible. The traffic is unbelievable. And I do like SF better than LA.
Great analysis. Native of Fresno originally. You nailed it. Always enjoyed Visalia. I missed the cultural component comparison like opera, symphony, and theater. Thumbs up!
Most excellent video, dude!! (Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure goes to SoCal). You got all the good stuff right, except you underscored Orange County. OC is a dream come true (and no, I don't even live there), it might deserve it's own video 😉
I’ll give to NorCal on this one for sure, but the special thing about LA and the surrounding cities are the mountains. They are tall, snowy, beautiful, and they have a lot of Biodiversity. The San Gabriels and San Bernadinos are so awesome to ski, hike and explore in.
Great job, a very fun and well-researched comparison. California truly has it all! Two more considerations: 1. SoCal has sensational Mexican food. 2. SoCal is more diverse (like NYC) than NorCal. Hasta!
Living in San Diego, it surprises me that rarely anyone includes Tijuana in the metro population since it's basically the San Diego-Tijuana metro area.
I’m from Yolo County, CA. Right in the middle between SF and Lake Tahoe. Most people from Bay Area and LA area don’t know much about other parts of California. As someone who’s from the Sacramento region who has explored more of north and south CA I have to say that NorCal is probs better cuz of its rural areas, country side and snow. SoCal is alright but it’s overpopulated meanwhile the Bay Area is overpriced.

I thought Yosemite was awesome! Any particular reason you don’t like it?
Thank you. Love your comment about and welcome to the channel!
If I’m feeling beachy, I go to SoCal. If I’m feeling outdoorsy, I’ll go to NorCal. It’s simple but that’s what’s great about Cali. Best of both worlds.
San Diego and LA are so similar... SF and San Jo are way different from SO cal

I’m a Cali girl, born & raised! Lived in the greater Bay Area until my mid 20s & moved up to Butte County where I’ve been since 1983. I love it here! I can’t imagine living anywhere else! @@JonathanAllen0379 I'd definitely recommend travelling out here and visiting not only the big cities but also the inland mountains and valleys. You never know, you may end up wanting to move to a small town in an amazing area.
I drove from Silicon Valley to Santa Cruz along hwy 1 during my first visit to CA last year and it was amazing. Definitely going back asap
Driving from Santa Clara (Silicon Valley) to Santa Cruz via Hwy 1 is a good trick. Don't you mean Hwy 17 (boring but efficient) or Hwy 9?
Maybe Half Moon Bay to Santa Cruz. I do this drive often.
@eh6794 it’s a gorgeous ride, especially at sunset.
The highway between Silicon Valley and Santa Cruz is Hwy 17.
Give hwy 395 a drive too, completely different scenery. It really feels like you're driving through a completely different state when driving from Lone Pine to Tahoe

I prefer the southeast coast of FL over SoCal. Both places, you have to stay close to the beach for ideal weather. Love the intracoastal waterway and canals in SE Fl. Cost of living is no comparison, NO state income tax vs 13% in CA! Housing also more affordable in FL.

Certainly a lot is just my opinion, especially with food and music. My intent was to make a lighthearted comparison that was "subliminally educational". And I do love the food scene in SF. I 💗 my Santa Cruz. 🌲🌲
Monterey would be a fairer comparison to Santa Barbara, I think.
That was pretty accurate. I've retired from Bay area. Still missing the weather.
