Definitely not a band to mute the strings - that’d be more like what you see on Victor & Reggie Wooten guitar -not sure what it is exactly but it definitely has some kind of pickup or contact mic as it plugs in from the goes coming out of it
It's a third magnetic pickup to sense other side of string when it's fretted. For example when he frets string on the seventh fret that pickup puts out out of tune frequency that happens between sixth fret and nut.

I listen to a lot of this style of music and guitar in particular, and even a solid amount of FF but this particular performance albeit loaded with tons of amazing moments, and to me is a quintessential example of the guitar as a melodic percussion instrument but for my ear has that “trying to hard to be avant-garde” energy. Just to many idea mashed together.
For all fans of this crap, I will be throwing a little intimate concert tomorrow at 6:00pm when I replace my old guitar's rusted strings white still plugged to the amp at full volume... and maybe, just maybe, I will proceed to sand them down with a chainsaw just to sound more "experimental" (However, this will depend on my mood and level of creativity at the time, since as a true artist I can't predict what my feelings and state of mind will be tomorrow) ...The one thing I can promise though, is that I will remain serious and distant to add solemnity to the show.

Fred Frith giving the 335 guitar a top rate body massage that beauty salons envied. What a fantastic improviser and musician!
