HOMEMADE DIY RAT OR MINK CAGE TRAP.

- An easily built cage trap to control pests. Use it as a rat trap,a mink trap or a squirrel trap. The great thing about them is that they are non lethal and you can release non target species. The weld mesh is one inch by one inch and you should try to have it as strong and stiff as you can obtain. Also you can make it bigger or smaller if needed. The size is not written in stone. Steel springs may work better than bungees if you can get them. Use a good quality bungee with plenty of stretch,
6 years old but much appreciated! Many thanks for the straight forward explanation and the attention to details. I will be attempting to replicate the design to target rats and may upscale for feral cats.
It still works 🙂 Thanks for watching
Vinnie, after our discussion. I built 7 of these trap of different sizes. Our season opened november 1st. Im in 9 muskrat so far. And just set up 4 traps for mink. I did change to a steel spring, which works fantastically! Just wanted to say thanks, and cheers mate! You helped me get into trapping in an amazingly budget friendly way.
Glad to be of assistance 🙂
What size type of spring did you use
Clearly put, explains every part of making the trap, and no needless fill. Thank you very much from the Land Down Under ;)
Hello Tim, Jeepers my trap is travelling a lot more than I am! Thank you very much.
The common materials immediately caught my attention.
Directions very clear.
Excellent idea and well engineered.
Made with simple tools.
I especially like the locking door.
Well done!!
Thanks much.
Thank you sir! I came up with how to build these at a time when I couldn't afford to buy them so it had to be common materials.
The best trap video I have seen. Really sick of these other guys who make a video and don't explain anything or show the build properly. Thanks Vinnie.
Thanks for watching Adam. I hope it is useful to you
And thanks for saying thanks. It's nice to meet someone with manners.
Thanks Vinnie.

I see you made a few modifications. Very inventive!
Thanks so much for the video, I like that it was all business with no fluff.
You are welcome indeed 👍
Great video, a mink just moved in under one of my barns, this worked on the first night. Thanks
Glad it helped
I make these traps , but iv got to give u 10/10 u made it look simple but I know alot of work went into it .well done
Thanks very much indeed Gerry 👍
I'm here to learn, my chickens are getting decimated.
My heart goes out to you. In the past I spent ten years selectively breeding the perfect hatching hen. I had to move house so I only kept five of my best hens each with a clutch of chicks. Mink wiped out the lot. I've never forgiven them
@@vinniesdayoff3968 I'm sorry to hear that Vinnie, I feel your pain. These were also my breeding stock, the hen were brody and unfortunately they got it. Never had issues with mink in my area, it was always the foxes I had to worry about.
Thank you very much for your instructions in the video, it is much appreciated.
@@civrn368 you are welcome
@@civrn368 A couple of mk6 Fenn traps would be useful too Ter. You can set them in a wooden box made to size. There are lots of instruction videos online. If you are in the UK check your laws because I think you guys had some changes to the law in the last few years
Very simple and very effective. Great instructions too. The bungy tension will probably need adjusted for what you are trying to catch. The pack rats I have would never trip something that stiff/heavy
What you need is a good quality stretchy bungee Gary. It does not need to be that strong at all, but it must be stretchy and maintain its ability to stretch.Having the trigger rod round and smooth at the end will help sensitivity too. Not many pack rats up my way!
Good man, great lil video. Loads of long tails around this year. Shall build a few.
Well done again.
I've caught a few myself this year
Well explained with no bulls**t. A great design too. Thanks!
Thank you very much! Great video! It is all the details i needed. Sure appreciate your time to make and share the video.
You are very welcome Gary. Thank you.
Boa tarde meu amigo do vídeo 📹 postado no UA-cam mostrando como funciona e como fazer ratoeira caseira e legal a sua criatividade parabéns a você e a todos
Obrigado pelo seu gentil comentário e por assistir meu amigo
I have made this trap and caught a cat which was released at long distance place. It was creating lot of troubles to birds and squirrels live here besides stealing milk kept for children. Thank you very much for your design.
Good to know it worked for you Velumani. It would probably be better to make it bigger for cats
vinniesdayoff Yes Sir. You are right.
Still it is working amazingly really fantastic design
That is a neat little trap design. I'll have to give one of those a try! Did you come up with this design yourself? I actually train mink for hunting and fishing, so I like to keep a few live traps around in case I lose a mink while out hunting. I usually buy my traps, but it annoys me buying traps, when I have so much good quality wire that I use for making mink cages. But have had trouble finding any home made designs that I can realistically build, and work well enough to replace my store bought traps. I'm hoping this nifty little design does the trick! Thanks for sharing! Oh, and sorry our mink are causing you so many problems over there. As I know first hand, they sure are amazing little fishing and hunting machines! We catch a lot of fish and game with my trained mink, that's for sure!
I have watched and enjoyed many of your videos Joseph. It is based on commercial traps, but I arrived at this design by trial and error and by adapting the materials I had available.
That's cool, I'm going to have to give building one of these a try :-)
EXCELLENT VIDEO! CLEAR STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS!WILL BE TRYING THIS SOON! IN THE U.S.
Thanks very much. Hope it works well for you and thanks for watching.
Very impressed with how well you've explained each step of the process. Big thumbs up from me!👍
Coming from someone called Minktrappingpaddy, that is high praise indeed! I am honored! I must have a look at your videos. Thanks Paddy
My videoing skills are not as good as my trapping skills, and that's for sure lol
Very clever! Well thought out and constructed device, great attention to detail. I enjoyed watching and learnt a few things. Thank you :)
Thanks Sean. These traps work well.
GREAT video, well explained, great to see someone who has the skill to self build this type of trap, only wish I had your workshop to make one in :-))) thanks for sharing your know how.
Thank you sir! 👍
I am using this trap and it is simple but very effective. I caught many rats (bigger one) and disturbing cats.
I am glad to hear it is successful for you
Great video, and clear instructions. I'm going to give this a go. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks very much for your comment. . I forgot to mention that they are cheap , the mesh costs maybe two euro. I have only ever lost one mink that reached the bungee and bit through it. You can stop this by placing a flat stone under the bungee where it is tied to the mesh.Hope it works well for you
Now that I think of it that was before I came up with the locking system
Thanks Vinnie for sharing your knowledge to help out others. Cheap and effective contraption to effectively remove a pest without killing it. Just release it in someone other neighborhood :)
Just make sure it is near some individual you don't like! 😉
Absolutely, that's the whole idea :)
You just saved me 50$ plus I love your accent and the fact that u used inches
Well, I first made these back in the day because money was not falling from the trees :-) Hope they are a help to you
Fantastic! There is a Canadian headed out to his cold rural Manitoba shop to build this right after this beer, err, pint!
Excellent! this pleases me
Gr8 video thanks very helpful 👍👍

I've just seen, on my trail camera, an adult rat escaping through 22mm steel mesh. Incredible.
I'd really love to see that video Brad

Rat escaping through 22mm wire mesh.
@@vinniesdayoff3968 It is not a good clip but you can see him wriggle through the cage.
Oh yea, if a rat can get his head through a hole he can get his body through as well. Smaller mesh is required for rats. About half that size should do it. 1/2" or whatever that is in mm's.
Gud sharenmy uncle..nice and clean
Thank you very much
Very interesting video. 👌🏾
Begod you are driving up the channel views all on your own Gerard. Thanks bud!
Excellent job,I need to make mine bigger for feral cats,so I will just upscale the design, thanks
Thanks. I should put that in the description, the size is not written in stone and you can make it bigger if needed. Thank you for watching.
I just started trapping mink and similar sized fur bearers in my local forests here in the NW US And this my be the simplest trap design i have found for a light weight cage trap. I think i would try and shorten the bracket and use steel springs. But this is extremely cheap, i priced them at about 5 bucks apiece. And the door system is sturdier than your cheap cage trap. Im gonna make a fist full of them and try them over the winter and see how it goes. A stack of these and some colonies may make for a fun first season.
I hope it goes well for you. I have a video where I dug a trap into the bank of a stream but it is just as effective to cover the trap with grass and leaves to make a tunnel. They are cheap. I only ever lost one mink that managed to chew the bungee. A spring would stop that, I just put a flat stone between the cage and bungee
Yeah, I live on a lake next to 2 feeder streams, backed up to miles of wooded land. I think I can use these and scale them up and down for all sorts of creatures. I do very much like the locking mechanism you came up with. That seems to be a major problem for traps. That and a weak door. Thanks for sharing you design. Ill report my luck when I have some!

Thanks Antine, It's a bit easier on the pocket than buying them :-)
Very helpful video, thanks!
Thanks for the comment Eva. Do you make a lot of cage traps?
vinniesdayoff thanks for the response Vinnie. I will be in future now I've learned the right technique! 👍🏻
I'm very impressed!
Hi Vinnie, hope all is well? Thinking of making a few of these over the summer. Question, any idea what gauge mesh you are using? Locally i can only find very heavy, which is very hard bend, or very light, which is way too soft.
Very nice job just what I need Thank you
Thanks Tommy 👍
Thank you for this video
My pleasure
Great video! Thanks for sharing!!
You are very welcome Sarah. Thank you for watching
Great trigger mechanism............now I’m going to have to redo mine.
You have me curious now Jason. How do you make yours?
First: Very clever. I loved the elegance of your orienting the raised wire to use as a lock-down for the trap door. This is an idea worth my time to build. Thanks a bunch.
Second: How do you repatriate the Americans?
Third: Inches forever!
thank you for the kind comment. Any unwanted Americans are given a royal send off after we point out the error of their ways! I grew up using inches so it pleases me to continue to use them:-)
Vinny someone below asked about details on 8 minutes in....... I would say details on how the trap is set with regard linking the treadmill would be helpful like a close up of how the trigger rod should look when set if that make sense..
That's where I always get stuck.
The trigger rod should be smooth with no burrs. I leave it holding the door with as little as possible gripping the door, if you follow my logic. this way a light weight is all it takes to set off the trap. Is that what you needed to know David?
Sometimes pics speak louder than words!!
IMO only .
Just curious, is there a reason you used a rubber bungee rather than a steel spring?
Just more easily available. You do need a good quality bungee to remain springy, and you need to tighten it now and then.
Bro get off his back he is obviously very gifted you mega critique 🤣.
Big help thanks 👍🏼
No problem 👍
Hi vinny what Gauge are you using and , where did you get the mesh from , can’t seem to get the right gauge , Martin Donegal
Hi Martin. I get the mesh from a local hardware that has always carried it. I'm not sure of the gauge. The mesh differs in hardness and stiffness. You need to be able to bend it but avoid the soft stuff. I'll measure it tomorrow (I'm not at home at the moment ) and tell you the thickness
vinniesdayoff thank you for your quick response , keep up the good work
@@aislingbridcarberry It's 1.7mm Martin. I hope that helps
Hi Vinnie, just inquiring how effective are these traps? Do you catch many mink in Ireland?? Great video, keep up the good work!😊
Hmmmmm. A suspect comment I think.
Please tell how to make the lock of the door again
See how I left the ridges of wire running from left to right at 1.59 minutes. The flange or bent piece of the door (5.34) will grip or lock behind that ridge of wire. Does that help?
vinny . i just made a slightly bigger version of this using your vid . so far its caught 2 cats and im going in the bush on saturday with it . ill let u know how it goes . hoping for agouti
Good stuff Ali. Is the agouti going to be a pet?
@@vinniesdayoff3968 nah . catch and release most likely
Great video, I think I have a project for next weekend. Would you put bait on the threadle or behind it, thanks Vinnie, ATB Christy.
Thanks Christy, I would put it behind the threadle, and maybe put stones or slates or something at the back and sides to stop critters reaching in. Make sure it is not directly under the threadle which might prevent the trap from going off. You can vary the length or size of the trap to suit, it is not set in stone. For mink you don't really need bait, just make a tunnel with the trap either by digging it in or more easily, covering it with grass and rushes or whatever, and have it beside a small stream. You certainly can put some fish or meat or even feathers in if you want. For safety you could put a flat stone between the trap and the bungee where it attaches to the rear of the trap as I once lost a mink that managed to bite through the bungee. A steel spring might be better if you can get them. Hope that helps bud.
Hi vinnie, good to see that your channel is growing continuously. Keep up the good work. Aoife
My head is growing nearly as much! Ta my love
You are awesome buddy
So are you my friend. I've been trying to convince people how awesome I am for years but they don't seem to believe me 🤔🤔
What mm of weld mesh is that ?.
Some weld mesh is too light for making traps.
It is 1.53mm exactly Tam. You are bang on about some weld mesh being too light. It also varies in hardness. I think I said in the comments to get strong and hard weldmesh if possible
vinniesdayoff thanks for replying, can you stick up a link where to buy the harder weld mesh ?.
@@tamm1796 I buy it from a local small hardware shop. Where are you from?
I’m up in Sligo. It’s very hard to get anything for trapping and snaring up here. The hardware shops only seem to stock the lighter mesh or the gauge is too big. The lighter stuff distorts as soon as you add the springs. I was looking for the heavier stuff for some Larsen, rabbit and mink cages. Cheaper to make when you need a few of them than to buy out the shop plus not everywhere you can use a 116 body grip or legal snares for pest control.
That’s a handy wee trap you built.
@@tamm1796 If you are ever in Tipperary Town go to Blackburn's hardware shop. They have a range of mesh usually. It isn't the hard steel that you would have to cut with a grinder it is still fairly easy to bend
great video i must make on of these are you allowed trap mink and stuff here ?
Have you ever had a mink go through that wire? Obviously it will hold most mink, but in my experience, an extra strong and motivated one can go through wire of that gauge, especially once the wire begins to age a bit.
Never had one go through the wire. You are wondering if mr Brocc will get through it.The only mink I ever lost managed to grab the bungee and bite through it. I get around this by placing a stone between the trap body and the bungee where it attaches to the trap. This was also before I came up with the locking door. It is important not to have soil or debris that can stop the door locking. I think I mentioned in the description to get the strongest and "steeliest" weld mesh you can. My supplier has different types and some are harder than others. I did have a fox rip one open to get at a rat that was caught in the trap. I was surprised at the job he did on it. You can obviously make the trap bigger if that suits you. I often vary the sizes
In the process of making one with smaller sized wire for my wandering ferret🙄, thank you so much from bonny scotland.
Pesky critters. I used to keep them myself
@@vinniesdayoff3968 oh believe me that's not what I've called him lately. But seriously thank you for the video. I dont have a lot, (I spend it on ferrets)so was looking for something cheap and cheerful and that works.
Thanks again!!
@@DAME75 you sound like me. These work. Just make sure the wire is reasonably stiff

Thanks very much 🙂👍
Is this 1"x1" mesh? What gauge wire do you suppose it is? Do you happen to remember the gauge thickness of the galvanized sheet metal?
It is indeed 1"x1" Mesh.. The sheet metal is about 1.5 mm thick. Around 16 gauge I think..
Thicker sheet metal would be better as long as you could still bend and work it. Not sure about the gauge wire. I just pick out the best I can get. Hope that helps you. Good hunting!
Is galvanised sheet metal different to using baking tins etc. The local pounds stores do baking trays for a pound a time but I don't think this galvanised sheet metal. Might I ask where you source your metal from?
Aluminum should work also for the trigger and the door. Many baking trays, cake pans are aluminum. cookie sheets, are mostly steel. take a small magnet with you so you can tell steel from aluminum, I would think most should work because of the way he has created the door seal. You don't want the animal to be able to bend it,. Galvanized steel will last longer than just plain steel. You can paint steel (I paint small steel objects, turn on the oven to 180f, turn off oven and leave item in overnight, paint good and cured). if you cannot get galvanized (check a local heating/Air conditioning shop for scraps or a metal recycler).
Love this. What bait is best for luring mink in. Cheers
Thanks Tnern. you could use fish oil or if the weather is not hot any fish meat or even feathers. It is important to cover the trap so it looks like a tunnel. Mink are very curious and will examine any tunnel or hole they find even without bait. I place dry grass in the trap. when you catch a mink they release a strong scent then proceed to make a bed with the grass. I think this grass is the best bait you can get.
Very good ! .Thank you
You are welcome Gary

Det är inte särskilt svårt att göra. tack för att du tittade
Great video, very clear and your accent is very soothing after some on youtube I could mention.
Thanks for sharing.
(Edit I have tried plastic bottle traps with out much success and wonder if metal is inherently better ........does it reduce odour..... than plastic. I like the idea of bungee chord again elastic bands don't work for me)
Keep it up!
Thanks very much for the compliment David.
It's a good video.
With regard to your question about plastic vs metal, if rodents are the target I believe it would not matter. Mice will get everywhere and into everything. I had a commercial live mouse trap made from plastic and I did not like it because a great deal of condensation built up if you caught a mouse. They ended up looking drenched, and I did not regard it as humane
I see thanks for the reply.
What gauge wire is that? 16?
I'm not sure what gauge. I measured it for someone recently and it is 1.7mm thick. Just from googling (convert mm to gauge) it is about 14 gauge or so
@@vinniesdayoff3968 ok thanks.

plz i cant understand what you did in minute 8:08 till 8:50
Hi. I inserted the threadle which the animal steps on to set off the trap. I had pre formed the hinges like I showed when making the door. These hinges just slot into the wire. to close them I squeeze them with the pliers. As I inserted it I judged where to place them by the length of my trigger bar. I had filed the end of the trigger bar so it would be smooth. The trigger bar passes through a wire clip which keeps it from falling down. I also showed how I had pop riveted the piece of shelf bracket which acts as a lever to close the door. Hope this helps.
thanks a lot. You have got a well deserved like from me
