Fitting 17" Front Skinnies on my 2020 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack 1320 and the Lessons I Learned

  • I never thought just trying to get some lightweight front skinnies for my 2020 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack 1320 would end up being a months long saga. But in the end, I learned a LOT about wheels and tires, and got what I believe is the optimal setup for me.
    In this video I share with you everything I learned, the mistakes I made, my wrong assumptions, and finally my victories. I talk about backspacing, caliper clearance, lug-centric vs. hub-centric, wheel spacers, conical vs. mag shank lug nuts, wheel and tire weights, touch-less vs. traditional tire mounting machines, and more.
    I actually go through 2 different sets of wheels and tires. For wheels I got Billet Specialties Win Lite 17x4.5, but different backspacing. For tires I start out with M&H Racemasters and end up with Hoosier front runners.
    This was all finished up and filmed up to the day before The Big Showdown UA-camr Callout. To see how much these lightweight front skinnies helped, check out my video from that night where I set a new personal best:

    Wow that was quite an adventure. This video will be very helpful to others wanting to put 17s on the front. Those lugs are like what we used back in the day with mag wheels like Keystones. Impressive weight savings!

      Yeah, I may have taken some crap from a couple buddies everytime they noticed them sitting in my garage on not mounted up lol. It was quite a learning experience though.

    Bro! You went to hell and back with those skinnies. Hope you can sell the other ones to recover some $. This video should make 10K of view atleast to help other people!

      Man I hope so. I could really use the money from these wheels. I'm still going to take hundreds of dollars in loss over them, but better than not getting nothing. Just need to find the right buyer.

    Awesome content man! I really enjoy the detailed explanations that you provide because a lot of people leave out the "small things" (even if too some it seems like common sense). We all have to start somewhere! I also truly appreciate the fact that you dont waste time, your videos and commentary is to the point with an explanation, as well as you speaking clearly. None of that BS filler material making a 2 min "how-to" vid drag on for 15mins with random irrelevance lol. Thanks again, you've gained a subscriber and I look forward to updates/vids!

      Thanks for that, I really appreciate it. I do what I can. Mostly I just apply what I like and don't like in other people's vids. I also hate when I look up a how-to vid and they just give a quick overview and don't actually show the process. Those small details can make a huge difference when taking something on. Thanks again for watching and for the sub!

    I seen so many videos of people buying the wrong wheels and then trying to make them work with spacers or adaptors, and most wheel manufactures seem to be of little help. I even saw one video of a skinny Weld wheel blowing apart as the guy backed out of his driveway! I haven't raced in a very long time, but back when I did you had to have studs that extended past the lug nuts, no closed lug nuts were allowed which to me seems so much safer. That way you know at a glance you have full engagement. I guess that rule changed. I also would never consider using spacers due to reduced lug engagement, or adaptors because I just don't trust them to be as strong or centered as well as a properly fitted factory type wheel. This is why I went with 18"x4.5" OEM Demon wheels for my 1320. I know I'm giving up some weight by not going with 17's, but I also know they will fit with no hassles and I only had to buy them once, plus they are forged instead of cast and very strong. I also could not wrap my head around using featherlight tires with paper thin sidewalls, which is why I went with Mickey Thompson Sportsman 28/6.0R18LT tires. Yes, I gave up some more weight, but I can safely run them up to 95 psi (low rolling resistance) and are rated up to 3,300 lbs. for the pair. I like having a good safety margin. I searched quite a while and never could find a weight rating for the Hoosiers, though I understand people run them on trucks so what do I know? I'm just not willing to push the edge of the envelope, but my goals are different. I'm not trying to make this car run 10's. My goal is to run strong 11's, but more importantly learn to run super consistent quarters because that is what wins.

      I completely understand. That's why I took a loss and got the second set of wheels that fit right out of the box. I only drove around the block once with that first set with the spacers and it just didn't sit right with me. I won't lie about the tires, seeing them balloon out so much worried me a bit, but Hoosier is a pretty good name in racing and you're right, a lot of the truck guys run them. It definitely helped that with all the weight reduction I've done I'm sure I have a good margin on weight. I also would never run them in the street, these are strictly track only. But now having had at least 30 passes on them since April I'm fully confident in them. They've felt good going down the track at 120+ mph too. I still do wish they didn't balloon out so much though.

      Thanks! From what I've seen between these Billet Specialties and other brands, if their wheel require mag shank lugs, they usually highlight that somewhere in the wheel description.

    If a company doesn’t warranty a wheel because of not using touchless clamp machine I wouldn’t even think of using their product

    So go with the 2inch back spacing NOT the 2 3/4 back spacing. I wanna do 17s every shop was saying so 18s I knew 17s could be done good video

    • @Scavenger1320
      @Scavenger1320  2 роки тому +2

      Correct, for these Billet Specialties you want 2" b.s. and yeah, as long as you have the 4 piston brembos and not the six you're good to go with 17s

    I know there isn't much tread on skinnies but would you say tread depth is similar on mh and hoosiers?

    • @Scavenger1320
      @Scavenger1320  2 роки тому

      From what I remember and from what I can see at 14:34 in this vid where i have them side-by-side I'd say the M&H has deeper treads than the hoosiers. The M&H definitely have a stiffer sidewall, that's for sure, but they're also a lot heavier because of it.

    Hey Chris, do the tech spec guys ever make you pull a lug nut to verify thread engagement? I run open ended lug nuts so it never comes up.

    • @Scavenger1320
      @Scavenger1320  3 місяці тому +1

      So far it's never come up at any of the tracks I've been to. I use the stock open ended lugs on the rear and the closed mag shank lugs on the front too.

    Do you like those Nittos? I need new street tires

    • @Scavenger1320
      @Scavenger1320  3 роки тому

      This is a tough question to answer. I only have about 1500 miles on them and just on the fronts. I haven't had any issues with them and they seem to be performing good, but I also haven't driven them in the rain yet. I might do an Open Track Day this summer though so that would really test them out. So far though I like them, and I like the sportier more aggresive look of the tread.

    What is max psi of those Hoosier skinnies? They look low @0:03, but prolly just an illusion.

    • @Scavenger1320
      @Scavenger1320  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, part illusion part balloon physics lol. On the tire it says not to exceed 40 psi when seating the bead, else it could explode! It doesn't say anything else about psi on them. The tire shop aired em up to around 34 I think, I took them up to 40 when I got to the track.

    I think I'm screwed I just ordered 17x9 racestars for the front i didn't want to go 4 inch cause cali streets will bend then quick

    • @Scavenger1320
      @Scavenger1320  20 днів тому

      If you're using them on the street daily I definiltely wouldn't go with a 4" wheel anyway. Once in a while like for going to car shows or the track is fine, but if it's a daily, that's just too narrow, plus you sacrifice handling.

    • @TheMReastside
      @TheMReastside 20 днів тому

      @Scavenger1320 ya I might keep the 17x9 with spacers and longer studs what you think?

      Size 17 x 9.5"
      Bolt Circle 5 x 115"
      Back Space 6.13
      Offset 22.5
      Load 1580
      Wheel Weight 20 @@Scavenger1320those are the specs say back space is 6.13

    • @Scavenger1320
      @Scavenger1320  20 днів тому +1

      @@TheMReastside Specs sound about right. I know my 17x10s have a 6.5" backspace so that should be good. Not sure on offset but it sounds right and I feel backspace is more important. Only thing that would worry me is the use of spacers. I've seen several horror stories where the spacers put extra stress on the bearing and studs by pushing the weight further out and end up snapping studs or wearing out the bearings faster. I know a lot of people that have used them without any issues too, but it's still something you'll want to pay attention to.

      @Scavenger1320 nice I can't wait to get off work and try them I don't daily usually just to work on Friday about 20 miles round trip and to some shows on Saturdays might have to upload a video if they work out also the guy that build my car said we can do longer stronger studs if worse comes to worse but he thinks I'll be fine to cause my 17×11s are pretty much same backspacing

  • @craigbuscio8167

    Do you think the 17 x 5 with a 2.25 backspace would clear ?

    • @Scavenger1320
      @Scavenger1320  2 роки тому +1

      Depends on the other specs, but I would think so. As long as there's at least 1.75" of caliper clearance you should be good.
